I don't know how many people would follow the horse racing on here, but who else was blown away by the performance of Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby? Due to what I do for a living, I see a lot of horse racing and this performance has left me speechless.

Not only was the horse awesome in how it won the race, but the whole story of how much the horse cost and where it was trained really does prove that dreams can come true.

Here is a link to the race. At 32 seconds you will see a horse miles behind the rest of them. This is the eventual winner! Incredible! I know the commentary on the clip might be behind, but I think the guy calling the race didn't even know what horse it was until it was in front!

You can see more about the story of the horse Here. They drove in a pick up pulling the horse box from New Mexico to Kentucky. The drive took something like 22 hours and apparently they stopped half way so the horse could have a gallop!

I think its amazing anyway!

My interest died when I learned that a lot of the horses who lose end up on someone's dinner plate a month later. I'm a card carrying member of PETA. People who Eat Tasty Animals, but that is just fucking sick and a shame.

Over here I've never heard of a single race horse who gets used for meat.

I have been told that horse meat is very tasty and is very popular in parts of europe, but in the Uk I have never heard of it happening much.

That race really was amazing. I had Friesan Fire to win, Hold Me Back to place, and General Quarters to show. But none of them did so well. :/ Oh well, I was still very happy for Calvin Borel. His reaction was priceless.

I think the upset had a lot to do with the sloppy track although the pace was still good. I missed the race itself but managed to catch it later on YouTube (where else?). I was gunning for Pioneerof the Nile, personally. I liked that although he tends to be a bit slow out of the gate, all of his races had been over a mile with five wins out of eight starts, and both speed and endurance are what it takes in those three races. Goes to show what I know, huh?

Also, WD, I'd think it would be highly unlikely that any horse that has managed to make it to the Derby would later be slaughtered. I don't know for sure though, unfortunately. My brother breeds horses out of Florida for the sole purpose of winning the Triple Crown. His horse Storm in May is half blind, made it to the Derby, came in next to last, and is still being pampered like a champion. He'll probably never be a great horse, but I doubt he'll end up hamburger. Most horses that get into the major races we actually hear about are retired to breed if stallions or mares relatively early in life, although geldings are run much longer. I believe that if horse racing became a common man's sport, we could see a change for the better. Already that is taking place with the debate over making drugging illegal. I think the more publicity the sport gets, the better for the horses it will be.

Edit: I did some research and found that at least one Derby winner (Ferdinand, 1986) was slaughtered, although he was retired to stud in Japan and was actually slaughtered there. Like that helps.

Most race horses, esp at the higher levels would never be slaughtered. If people paid good money for them, the chances of them being put down are slim as its not gonna get anywhere near the amount of money back that they paid for them.

Some of the form experts said that even if they looked at the race the next day, they still wouldn't pick the winner. I'm not sure the going made it worse for all of the other horses. Ok, they might have been closer to the winner, but it won so easily and it was still going away from them at the end. Plus its journey from where it was to first must of made up about 25 lengths on all the other horses. It was lucky to get the dream run up the rail tho.

The story makes me smile each time I re read it. On the off of the race, there are betting exchanges here that had the horse at 140-1! Fair play to Calvin for doing the double too.

Real Sports on HBO did a thing on it. They get sent to Mexico or Canada. French like horse. There are people trying to rescue them.
