Mind swap

An idea from the plot bunny pen, something I realize I’ll never see to fruition. Not quite Mind Control, more SF&F.

Research perhaps started during the Cold War to find a way of swapping minds between bodies, for espionage reasons. The project closed down, but a couple of the wunderkinder worked on the idea and found a way to make it work. In any case, a select group of people now have the ability to insert their minds into the bodies of others. The group is very cautious, knowing that, for instance, major theft would bring too much attention. Their experiments have been cautious. Now, however, somebody has taken the idea and run with it.

That’s backstory. The plot would be a day in the life of somebody who has done that - at work, at home, in bed with a lover. Precisely the same body, same voice, same scent, but none of the original ‘owner’s’ knowledge or memories. How would that go?

I can think of a few mild scenarios. A man and woman can try making love while swapped to experience how the other half lives. One of them likes it a little too much.

A little spicier: two friends swap and A has sex with B's spouse. Maybe B didn't intend for that to happen. Maybe A didn't intend to do it or totally did.

Or two spouses swapping bodies and one finds out by accident that their spouse is cheating on them. Leads to sex with the extramarital partner and not gentle loving sex.

Okay this sounds more like a possession, than a mind swap. The mind swap makes me think of Freaky Friday. Possession ... where a powerful psychic pushes someone's consciousness back and takes control of the host body. Make it more weird where the original consciousness can still hear, see and feel everything that's going on, but is powerless to stop it.

Say, the psychic possesses a mans body, drives home to his house and gives the man's wife a fucking like she's never had. All the while the husbands consciousness has to endure it all, knowing it's not really him who just gave his wife four orgasms and left her a euphoric, exhausted mess.. It's like the ultimate cuckold story. Nine months later when she gives birth, it's his child, but is it really?

Corporate espionage would be an obvious use for it. Psychic takes possession of a low level software engineer. He goes in, steals what he needs. But before he leaves, he acts on the feeling that the man's female boss was looking a little too hard at the young man, so he steps into her office after everyone's gone home and tries to seduce her.

After fucking her wildly on her desk, he snaps a quick pic, and sends it to the woman's husband, then goes home and fucks the hosts wife. As he's lying there after, he says. "My boss was a better lay than you."

Trapped in his own head, the poor man, knows he's going to be divorced, fired, and likely jailed in the next two days. What a mind scrambler!

There was a sf story... in that a special equipment (think fancy chair and helmet combo) AND training was necessary, but with it a trained person would concentrate gaze on someone while sitting in that contraption, out a window over the street or otherwise, and jump on. There's a struggle -- that's where the training comes in mostly, defender has innate advantage. If attacker loses, he dies.

That's how they got the bad guy at the end, they tricked him to attempt a jump onto another trained person. That was said to almost never, possibly, going to work, even with an attacker with experience of many jumps/fights and a newbie with basic skills. Even a jump onto random unprepared person never had 100% confidence. The original conciousness may or not be in the backseat, I don't remember if that was addressed, and the baddie always decided to flip a death switch on any body they left behind, generally so it was easier to salvage the equipment for later.

Again, don't remember if that was presented as the only way, even rather not, how the attitude of the investigators was, it seemed the baddie had a choice to not do that. It likely had to be so on the very first jump of a traveler regardless though, perhaps unless arrangements were made to keep the mindless, soulless original body artificially on life support somehow, awaiting possible return of the owner... or someone else.

And again, that may be what made their own demise, decision if the left behind body lived was to be made before the jump. In case of not killing the host there could be several other possible outcomes, particularly in case of losing the invasion. Including, the invader falling into backseat of the previous host. To resolve that would pretty much require the now freed host to use the found equipment to attempt invasion into someone else, while deciding to not kill their original body, unknowingly leaving it to the failed invader they may not know was still lurking in the background.
