KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – More than 2,000 angry Afghans, some firing guns in the air, protested on Tuesday against the improper disposal and burning of Qurans and other Islamic religious materials at an American air base.

A military official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it appeared the Qurans and other Islamic readings were being used to fuel extremism, and that detainees apparently were leaving notes for one another inside them.

The official, who did not want his nationality disclosed, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident. The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says the books were inadvertently given to troops for burning.

Military personnel threw away, and ultimately burned, confiscated Bibles that were printed in the two most common Afghan languages amid concern they would be used to try to convert Afghans, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday.

The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.

Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.

“The decision was made that it was a ‘force protection’ measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims,” Wright told CNN on Tuesday.

Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.

Carney Apologizes Profusely On Behalf Of Obama Admin For Military Burning Korans…




Shockingly, the non-stop apologies haven’t stopped them from rioting.


(LA Times) — The White House apologized Tuesday for the apparent mishandling of Muslim holy books at a military base in Afghanistan, calling the episode a “deeply unfortunate incident.”

“It does not represent the views of our military,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters. “And it certainly does not represent the conduct of our men and women in uniform or our general respect for the religious practices and beliefs of the Afghan people.”

U.S. officials are trying to limit the fallout from news that the books, including Korans, were being burned inside the base. Laborers working at the Bagram Air Field found books and brought them outside, sparking protests.

Carney echoed the apology of Gen. John Allen, U.S. commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan, who quickly condemned the “inappropriate disposal” and emphasized that it was inadvertent.

Carney said the incident is under investigation “to understand what happened and to ensure that steps are taken so that incidents like this do not happen again.”

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – The Afghan president’s office says it has received a letter from President Obama formally apologizing for the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

The statement from President Hamid Karzai’s office says the U.S. ambassador delivered the letter on Thursday.

In the letter, which is quoted in the statement, Obama expresses his “deep regret for the reported incident” and offers his “sincere apologies.”

According to the statement, Obama wrote: “The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible.”

Afghan Soldier Kills Two American Troops Over Koran Burning…

(CBS News) — Two U.S. troops have been shot to death and four more wounded by an Afghan solider who turned his gun on his allies in apparent anger over the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, an Afghan official tells CBS News.

A statement from the International Security Assistance Force – Afghanistan, the international coalition in the country, confirmed that two troops were killed in Eastern Afghanistan on Thursday by “an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.”

ISAF does not typically give the nationality of casualties until family members have been notified, but the CBS News source in the Afghan government said those killed and injured in the attack in the Khogyani district of the eastern Ningarhar province along the border with Pakistan were Americans.

The source also said the shooting appeared to be motivated by the burning of Qurans at the sprawling U.S. Bagram air base, north of Kabul, but he did not provide additional details as to what led him to that conclusion

Afghans Protesting Koran Burning Attack Compound Housing Foreign Workers…

(Guardian) — Afghan protesters armed with stones and molotov cocktails have attacked a military base and a compound housing foreign workers in Kabul, in a second day of violence over the burning of copies of the Qur’an by foreign forces.

At least 16 demonstrators and one police officer were injured as enraged crowds took to the streets in central and eastern Afghanistan, shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Obama”.

Police in Kabul used water cannon and fired guns into the air to deter the demonstrators, who were attacking shops and smashing car windows. Security guards in the compound that came under attack also opened fire with automatic rifles.

A military base was attacked on the outskirts of the capital.

Eleven men were treated for gunshot wounds in Kabul, said Kabir Amiri, spokesman for the city’s hospitals. Another five people were injured in eastern Jalalabad, said Ahmad Zia Ahmadzai, spokesman for the provincial governor.

“We should not be satisfied with mere protests and empty slogans but the military bases of the invaders, their military convoys and their troops should become a target of our courageous attacks,” said a statement that was released today on Voice of Jihad, the Taliban’s official website, and signed by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

“Kill them, beat them, take them as prisoners and teach them such a lesson that they never summon the courage to abuse the Holy Quran again,” the statement continued.

Demonstrations have drawn thousands of angry Afghans to the streets, chanting “Death to America!” amid violence that has killed 11 people including two U.S. service personnel.

The Taliban are using pages torn from the Koran to package heroin sold on the streets by kids. ISAF forces operating in Souther Afghanistan found children with "pockets of heroin and wads of cash" according to USA Today's Gregg Zoroya. The heroin was packaged in ripped up pages from Islam's most holy document. The story also details how the Islamic radicals are using children, aged three and up, as human shields or to plant roadside bombs, as well as peddling drugs to help fund the insurgency. Perhaps the State Department could explain to the Taliban that desecrating the Koran is un-American. That should stop them.
