"Middle Eastern and North African" to become an official US "race" group

Just what we need, another "race," that isn't actually a even a race, to divide the US population into separate groups.

For the first time since 1909 when Middle Eastern origins were added to the Census' white category, so-called "MENA" (Middle Eastern and North African Americans) will become a separate "non-white" group. This will entitle those of this background to qualify for affirmative action and other special programs not allocated to "whites."

This is less of a "race" than the made up "Latino race" which isn't a race either. Its a geographic region with a somewhat common majority culture across it. Its not a "race." Look at Bashar Assad, for example, and tell me he isn't white.

Some are saying this will even allow Jewish Americans to finally qualify as "non-white" and get affirmative action benefits, something that was never seriously proposed in the past. Its largely agreed already that Israelis who have immigrated to the US will be eligible even if they are of fully Ashkenazic ancestry.

Pretty soon, all but a small minority of Americans will not be entitled to Affirmative Action and other "minority" benefits.

I assume Turkish Americans will qualify but Greek Americans will not.

I'm not sure about Armenians since they have historically considered themselves culturally European. I'm sure the lure of AA and other benefits will change that pretty fast.
