Ok all you computer techies... I'm running Microsoft Office Pro on my new computer...Has run fine since I bought the program (over three years ago) and fine on this computer (over a year) until two weeks ago. Now Word will not load although ever other Office program loads with no problem.

I uninstalled Office and reinstalled it and downloaded and installed all the updates and service packs this afternoon and it still wont' load Word in any fashion.

When I try to use it I get this error code

oxc0000005

Any suggestions??

Looks like jacintexas pegged it.

I was too lazy today to look deeper than my general search. ;)

Thanks guys. So after downloading all the patches and updates and such...still no clue why it isn't working.

If I understand it correctly, my next choice is to simply reinstall XP?

Hmmm...Maybe those Linux guys have something.... :nana:

Have you run scandisk and defrag (or some equivalent like Norton's DiskDoctor and Speeddisk? It could be that your MS Word or some component is on a bad sector of your drive. If your drive is developing bad spots and/or is corrupted reinstalling XP is probably not going to fix the problem either.

Are you using any after-market plugins/templates -- like Avery's templates for the various Avery brand label products? Perhaps one of those is causing the problem.

Have you tried completely removing Office, rebooting and then reinstalling the whole package? There are several "shared DLLs" that are loaded as part of the whole package that removing one component of Office won't remove -- and that XP won't let a non-admin user remove in any case.

Speaking of XPs admin functions, are you trying to fix this from your normal login, or the system admin? XP seems to be a bit lacking in telling non-admin users they can't do something -- it's more "OK, Fine" and then ignore the request.

It's probably a currupted file.. try a total uninstall then find and delete all folders that Office creted when it installed.. under c:program file snd under C:\Documents and Settings\Jack\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OFFICE.. you miht so a seach on microsoft.coma dn see if teh y tell you were al teh folders are creted.. they usually have document thst list them all.. hope thathelps.. and if you do have to do reinstall of XP do a repair install.. do a googel usinf winXp repair install as the keyworks and you should find a lot of helpful articles.. I'l see what I can fins also taht might help..

One additional thought -- when Word is opened without a document specified, it opens the "Normal" template, NORMAL.DOT. If that file is corrupted, it can cause Word to crash, and it is NOT always located where an uninstall and manual removal of directories will remove it -- especially if you've configured the preferences to change Word's default directory structure to point at a custom dictionary or use a secondary drive for storage. FWIW, I've never had a custom dictionary cause Word to crash, but I suppose it's possible.

True I had forgot about teh Normal.dot file at start up. teh defult location is
C:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent.. ty deleting it and see if Word will start.. Worsd will create a new dot file when it starts.. another thing.. do a search on you hard drive with widows explorer fo al file that end with the tmp extension (these are temporary files) and delete all of them.. it may be a tmp file that's courrupt. any the word needs it will ecreate when it starts.
