I agree with you! Their payment is a roof over their heads! It's called responsibility not work! My children will never recieve "an allowance". If they want money they'll have to find jobs. It's a crazy concept for an entitled generation to grasp.

I approached it differently with my three sons.
I gave them an allowance, because: A) I wanted them to have some experience handling money and budgeting and learning that if you spend it now, you don't have it later, and B) They received something for just being part of the family. Sharing is what families do.

That having been said, however, I also impressed upon them that they had chores to do, and were expected to do them, because they were part of the family, and sharing in the work is also what families do.

I didn't "pay" them for their chores, nor did I "withhold" their allowance for not doing them. (Although I did institute a system of "fines" deducted from their allowance for non-performance, and also for other sorts of behaviors that we didn't want, like swearing in the house...)

It worked out well. You get because you're a part of the family, and you give because you're a part of the family. All three are now grown and on their own--nobody's dead, nobody's in jail, nobody is still living at home, and they're all paying their own bills.

My kids got an allowance during the summer and it was for doing certain things around the house during the week. They would rotate the jobs each week between the two of them.

They also mowed a couple different yards during the summer for cash. The neighbors tended to pay them pretty good for the work also.

Now that it's winter they don't really have extra income coming in. Snow blowing doesn't seem to pay around our house.

Also, they are finding it hard to find real jobs until they turn 16. A few more months then they might start looking.

We are willing to help them out with most of the extra stuff they need so it's all good. As long as they keep their grades up and play in school sports during the year

Although mine are still young they both have bank accounts. If a relative gifts them cash, our rule is 80-10-10. 80% goes into saving, 10% is spent, the remaining is donated. I have had issues with relatives giving them gift cards instead. To prevent that this year our Christmas newsletter included a paragraph of how we view money as a tool, and gift cards irrelevant. They only recieved one. We bought doggie goodies and donated them to Leader Dogs, one of our favorite charities.

Other than a few larger purchases made by them, mine probably still have the first dollar they ever got.

By high school they better have jobs!!!! I was working part time in middle school, nowadays they have so many different options. They won't be going door-to-door pushing products like I did. They'll have an internet company.
In other news it's almost 30° out! I'm in panties and a tshirt instead of footie pajamas! Yay! Sledding is in my near future!!

I know I am. The short runs to and from the car along with other short bursts just don't bother me like they use to. AND I HATE THAT FACT

Maybe it's because I'm a lady (I think were engineered to always be cold) or how I insist on walking if it's within a 5mile radius but the cold is cold! As long as it's not below -20° I'll brave it. I think standard measurement is a joke. Everything should be metric. But fahrenheit tricks you to think it's warmer! So I'm all about it.
Someone in the UP somewhere is laughing at the idea that -20° is cold.

Next weekend is the Fire and Ice Festival in Rochester. It's my favorite winter festival, watching fireworks with snow on the ground is so beautiful, the reflection off the snow makes me appreciate living in Michigan so much more!

They have a twenty minute firework show on Fri and Sat, downtown Rochester is decorated in lights, ice sculputes on display and demonstrations, a sled hill and dog sled demenstrations, an ice rink, even a fire pit to make smores and drink cocoa around to warm up. It's a real treat. If your on that side of town next weekend I would recommend going!

Never been, even when I worked at the auto auction. As for favorite restaurant I don't have one but I do love a Pizza Pappalis Deep Dish Seafood Pizza.
