Can you help in reducing this blanket of methane gas that is warming up our Earth? Recent evidence holds that methane (CH4) is second only to carbon dioxide (CO2) in creating a warming greenhouse effect but is easier to control. Atmospheric methane has doubled over the past 200 years, and its smothering potency is over 20 times that of CO2. Methane may even be responsible for a sudden warming of the Earth by seven degrees Celsius about 55 million years ago. As most methane is produced biologically, the gas is sometimes associated with bathroom humor. The largest abundance released by the US, however, is created when anaerobic bacteria break down carbon-based garbage in landfills. Therefore, a more effective way to help our planet than trying to restrict your own methane emissions would be to encourage efficient landfill gas management.

This is taken from one of my fav websites Astronomy Picture of the Day

it was something that i didn't know much about but reading this post and following the link to read about landfill management is very interesting and i think is typical about environmentalism and how things that could easy make big improvements to our environment is ignored

I like that the methane is represented by noxious green clouds blanketing and killing the earth.

Yes, we are in extreme danger

of going up in a fireball!

I propose a government program that creates a framework for a newly created sport, Cowfartlighting. It should be for all ages, so it will need a calfcowfartlighting division as well as steercowfartlighting for the sexually ambiguent, and heifercowfartlighting division for the ladies. Of course, the big money pro-sport aspect of it will be the Bullfartlighting League. Not will it just reduce immissions but will have the anticipated side-benefit, a new tax!

re Cow Farting

You would be holding the match to the wrong end of the cow. Cows release methane by belching, not farting.

I clearly stated that this was a GOVERNMENT PROGRAM!

One cannot let any fact, science, or constitutional amendment stand in the way congress.

Physics

My friend, he is studying Physics, once had to answer an exam question which was along the following lines:

If you put 3 cows with maximum weight xxx in in a closed light, plastic sphere of xxx weight and they produce xxx methane gas per hour due to their diet
a) how long would it take for the sphere to take off and remain floating at a height of xxx meters?
b) how long would the cows be able to survive if xxx methane gas is lethal?

I thought that was rather funny :)
