I'm interested to know what you think it means.

Here is what I don't want to see:

1) Dictionary definitions
2) Treatises on philosophy
3) Anything cut and pasted

All else is fair game.

Metaphysics is one of those weird words that sounds like it means something astonishingly important. And then you find out what it actually does mean and it's almost anti-climactic because its definition really doesn't quite live up to the allure of its name.

I always have taken it to mean something wicked abstract. Theoretical-like. With intangible aspects about it.

I belive metaphysics is the theory of reality rather then the actual reality which in theory could be reality but probably isnt.

funny I always thought it was to do with the Physics of the Unreal as in a justification for the unreal spirits teleconetics all those sort of things.

Oh, Yeah. Metaphysics is more than the recent definitions of parapsychology and other psychobabble, but is also the attempt to understand the fundamental nature of reality, boiling it down to a single overarching statement, if you will.

To me meta is looking beyond the obvious..
It is looking for the underlying cause... the underlying meaning..
A journey into the unknown....
Applying meta to ones own life might mean intense self examination into the why's and how's of who and what we are...

It's about making theory and philosophy sound like a science, IMHO. Concepts like beingness examined from a perspective which admits we don't know. It's worthy of a few moments over a beer, but the dork who turned it into several courses at the undergraduate level could probably sell used bicycles at the freakin south pole.

i just asked my brother who is doing physics in university what it meant and he had never heard of it. how relevant is it then to the physical world we live in

It means "beyond physics" It is a branch of philosophy..
If your brother was a philosophy major he would have heard of it... Some think it is relevent to discover the meaning of existence.. you know.. stuff like: "what came first, the chicken or the egg?"

I though I saw this addressed on Sesame Street. You know, the whole eggs on conveyor belts, filling up the cartons and such. Showing those chickens in a giant centrifuge-like machine..
