Memories of the "Dirty South"

Lmao, I just moved from Michigan to the south. Tennessee as a matter of fact.

I tell you though, I'm not gonna miss the snow up there, that's for sure. :D

So sad to see

They move south and immediately become wimps!:p

I'm tired of all that cold man!

Time for a nice summer for a change, and a winter with no flippin snow! I cant wait to see these southern folk try to drive in what little snow they do get, while I whistle my way around, with the window down. lol. :D

I agree. When I did live up there, I flew through the rain like it was a sunny day. As far as snow though, I drive really carefull like.

Dirty South?

Shit. The South was like the Garden of Eden when I moved away from the Dirty, Rusty, Smelly North.

Peaches the size of grapefruit
Free watermelons with a fill up of gas
Going fishing every single day
Leaving your house unlocked
Home grown tomatoes

huh? the dirty south is black slang for atlanta. ask miles, he'll peek from under his hood and tell ya.

Those last three things on your list describe northern Wisconsin perfectly! (Of course, some of the fishing will be ice fishing. :D)

I love living up here in the mitten as I do, the snow is a bitch, but I love having four seasons.

And driving in the South is frightening! The temp drops and people are afraid the roads will ice up, so they close interstates? That's a sign! (just kidding..)

But, really - there are horrible drivers everywhere - but the ones who deal with snow, rain and those damned slippery leaves have an edge up in experience.

In no particular order
Spanish Moss
Peach Cobbler
Honeysuckles
Pecans
Pecan Pie
Devilled Eggs
Potato Salad
Cornbread (not as good up here)
Thick, rich, gravy (guaranteed to give you a heart attack)
Vanilla Ice cream
The guy that used to sell Shrimp out of the back of his truck
Lemons the size of Grapefruit (Natural, and I'm not exagerrating)
Fresh squeezed orange juice daily
Homemade muffins
Hot days
Warm nights

God I miss the South. Live in Valdosta for awhile. Ohhhh....*shivers*

I was born and raised in Georgia (my people have been here since early 1700's), however I have traveled all over the world and lived in other places. Your words capture some of what is wonderful about our land, I can see you have an appreciation for it that is lost on most. There is more to our culture to be appreciated than not driving in the snow. Centuries of living here have created something that people moving from up north have a hard time appreciating. Get outside of 285 in Atlanta and talk to someone from Georgia. Get a free watermelon with a fill up, ask an old man sitting on his porch "how's he doin?" If your real lucky (and polite) he might just tell you.......

yes!

This thread reminds me of a poem I wrote after living in Jersey for a few years and visiting NC for a weekend. I hope you guys don't mind me sharing. :)

~Coming Home~

A patchwork quilt
that warms and welcomes
Green miles of pine
threaded with golden leaves
Carolina blue sky
high with haziness
A quilt
that covers and comforts
caramel hues of sweet, iced tea
splash of bright, yellow peel
draped across a tall glass

As you cross the state lines
"Welcome to North Carolina"
reads a little slowly
the air is drenched
with a sweet, raisin
smell of tobacco
An old. black man sits
on his porch, in his worn-out sofa
stuffing falling from the seams
his wife fans herself with the Daily Times

Across town, old money
calls for cotillions and debutants
leather-faced migrant workers
pile into old school buses
to make their way home
dirty faced little boys
with rolled up sleeves
ride their bikes to corner stores
a sigh says "fish bait for sale"
that is Home.

These are not my words but I have adopted them

"Coal burnin stove
No natural gas
If that ain't Sounthen I'll Kiss yer ass"

Spring Mornings in the Mountains have no equal on the face of this earth. Unless it is Grandma's fried apple Pies
Kentucky "Means paradise"

It was not meant to offend anyone. My lover is from the south and I have the deepest respect for him. It, in no way, was meant as a racial slur. If you were offended, I truly apologize to you.
