Since Byron doesn't really have a grave or a headstone I was thinking of having a tree planted in his honour at the one year anniversary of his death.
I would have the certificate of planting sent to his dad.

What you guys think?

My Sil, who also knew him somewhat, will be doing a painting eventually when I get around to giving here the info she wants and between her shows and commissions.
I could send an image of that too, although her paintings might be a bit much for his dad but Byron loved them.

What kind of tree?

It should have a plaque, something in an inexplicable, dead language, like a bad Rosetta stone, to confuse and amuse. If it could say fuck off in cuneiform that would be fitting.

I think it ought to be a walnut tree. Then Noor could tell people who piss her off, "Here, eat Byron's nuts."

I don't know what kind of tree, it would be in Israel.
We never got there, but at least memory of him would be.

I think I can have that stuff in the painting, Reci! My SIL can do some sort of prints of it for his dad and close friends.

His ashes are in a crevice with his mom's just below the summit of a mountain in the Sierras. There is a different stone marking the spot, but nothing else.
At this point if I die while his friends are still climbing, I will go there too.
He was not embalmed, it's a long story. They have an amazing view :)

A planted tree would be an awesome thing..

Edit to add.. If in Israel, a Myrtlewood would be nice.. beautiful tree that is from that area so should do well.

You know all his storage boxes were labelled in runic, and once you translated that they were in code? I saved one.

A walnut tree would be good then. Maybe pistachio.

He once had an Av in Pali just to fuck with me. He never did explain it. I believe I begged.

Confusing people made him happy.

I was no fun, I never let on if I knew something or not until hours or days later, then I would let it "slip" and he would laugh so hard.

Noor,

I think the tree is a fine idea! I didn't know Byron , but whenever I hear or read the words "I'm your Huckleberry" he comes to mind. That will stick with me all the rest of my days :). If your doing a plaque or marker of some sort that's as fitting an epitaph as any IMO. Just my two cents.

what type of tree is byron?

that's a hard one.

several things to consider when planting trees in memory of someone or in honor of a person is running the risk that the tree doesn't make it. i would honestly plant a grove. sometimes trees don't make it. i heard a story of a woman who sprinkled her husband's ashes all over the rose garden, and that year, all the roses died. she felt horrible killing his prized roses, with his body none the less.

the symbolism is beautiful though.

i imagine byron as a sequoia. an entire universe against the sky.

that might sound cliche and trite. if i knew the trees or byron better, i might pin him down as a lodgepole pine. i hope his family and close friends are holding up well. you as well, noor. it can't be an easy adjustment on anyone.

what ever the tree, there is a specific climate for that tree. conditions must be right. nature untouched does much the rest.
