First lady Melania Trump and first daughter Ivanka Trump arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Saturday morning sporting an absence of headscarves.

"Disgraceful," said one Saudi citizen. "They should have covered their heads. Men might get ideas if women don't cover themselves. They should not be allowed outside until they cover their heads."

This wasn't the first time a presidential visit engendered such outrage. In 2015 then president Obama and his wife Michelle visited the House of Saud. Michelle chose not to cover her head during the visit to which the con artist tweeted:

It's long been U.S. policy not to require official American women to cover their heads on visits to Saudi Arabia, so this isn't out of line with established U.S. policy. During the first Iraq war, the United States Consul General to Saudi Arabia was a woman. The Saudis grumbled and the United States said "Tough, you want a visa to the United States, accommodate yourself to the real world and work through a woman." She never covered her head, although she didn't try driving herself while she was in Saudi Arabia.

I'm a liberal, and I'd already posted that it has long been U.S. policy--through conservative and liberal administrations alike--to say "tough" to the Saudi's on this issue. It's also been my observation that conservative administrations have sucked up to the Saudis much more than the liberal administrations have.

Liberals are far more likely to despise Saudi Arabia for it's human rights abuses and exportation of radical Wahhabism than RW Republicans. Bleeding heart types don't like Saudi oil princes, misogynistic males and their ilk.

When visiting another country it is usually a good idea not to violate local taboos and customs. But this is as a tourist or business person. Some countries are pretty backward by our standards. But it can be small things. In the Netherlands you don't hold doors open for women and in Europe a man does not give up his seat for lady. Official representatives can and perhaps should act different and represent their own customs.
