this is an alternative ooc club. i know some may want a slight difference from the very heavily western and british influenced clubs, so i offer this:

this club is set in japan, early 1800s. come as you are or dress for it as you like. the meijii era was one in which japan was moving from fuedal coups to established government and modernization.

trains have become an intresting new thing. samurai are no longer respected and are forced to find ways to adapt to how society has cast them out so quickly.

i am a ronin, a wandering samurai who has no lord to serve any longer. i have adapted to society by protecting those who are weak and destroying the corrupt.

my name is Himura Kenshin (aka tmuyo either is fine), please, there's plenty of space, pull up a pillow and sit. enjoy some tea or lets have a few bowls of sake to get the feeling of the mood of japan.

this is afterall an inn, for those who are weary travellers and for some who are just beginning their travels. enjoy!

these rules are being borrowed from cg but i was coming up with a similar list anyway:

1. Have fun.
2. Respect others. This may be cyberspace but remember their real people out there with real feelings.
3. Communicate. Not only in words but also in the actions of your character.
4. No graphic sex, light teasing, innuendo. Certainly but nothing that would not be done in Public.
5. And off color remark every now and then is funny, but a steady stream is boring and offensive. Doubling meaning is so much better.
6. If not available to talk post yourself out.
That about does it for rules.

back to the top you go to show, for oldies, goodies, and newbies all.

C. G. Raven the Master of the Canadian trading sloop "BONTEMPS" enters this charming Inn. The feel of the " Meijii Inn " is one of peace and contentment. A place where east can meet west and ideas shared.

C. G. with hands by his side bows in greeting to Himura Kenshin, his host.

Sir is there the possibility for some green tea and conversation?

I have crossed from the China coast, and the Inn at China Pearl.

Your kindness and understanding where most appreciated.
I look forward to pleasant hours spent talking and listening.

For I believe we all have something to say, and should have the freedom to say it, with respect for all.

So saying C.G. retires to quite seclude corner that is unobserved to ponder and think in seclusion, alone at peace.

bowing in response to my new guest and already acquainted friend cg, i bring him a bowl of hot tea to cool while he thinks over his furrowed brow.

as i return to my space on the mat i return to my meditation on whether the good i do here is actually good for all, or only good for who i believe are those deserving......

(I enter wearing a kimono of the softest spring green. I fell in love with its unusual pattern. It looks to have been lashed at by the brush of child artist. Bright slashes of crimson decorate the hem.)

Kon-nichiwa, my friend.
Do not allow me to disturb you meditation. When you have a
moment, I would love to discuss your new thread. It is beyond
creative.

(Seeing CG, I retreat to the corner with green tea for two.)

*sweeping in, just after Honey_B, wearing my lavender kimono, my long auburn hair flowing around the shoulders*

Konichiwa, Himura. *bows quietly before regarding CG and Honey* May I join you?

Please do TygerEyez I was just pondering

What is the difference between?

A sex romp story and Erotica?

What do you think?

A very difficult question indeed CG. Let me have a stab at it.

Methinks that the difference is on the pyschological level. A romp story is more concerned about the actual physics if you like - the plot itself. The characters and what they do and feel. Erotica - I think goes a little bit further in bringing the reader into the written word. It plays with the fantasies, desires and dislikes of the reader in a much more direct way then a romp story.

Throws two pennies on the table

Walking in wearing a burgundy kimono with ivory trip on the long sleeves, I bow respectfully to Tmuyo.

If I may, I think the difference between a sex romp and erotica is that a sex romp is just details and anatomy. Erotica is the interplay between people. A hundred years ago in Boston, a woman could be arrested for showing ankle, couldn't she? That was erotic. Now women can walk around practically naked. There is nothing wrong with that, mind you, but there is a difference. Erotic involves the mind, not just chemical reactions and glands.

(I listen to the opinions of my friends)

I've got a opinion when it comes to upper and lower class terms for things. But, I'll save that for later. Language, connatation, context, form - they all change with time. Doesn't change the premise though. The premise of a sex romp is sex. To be as titillating and erotic as possible. Using whatever tools necessary at the time to do it. By tools, I refer to Caspai's example of glimpsing an ankle. If that's what got a reader's juices flowing at the time it was written then it could be a detail in a sex romp. A sex romp doesn't include any other aspects. Nothing else to detract from the main goal of stimulating the reader.

I feel to be regarded as erotica, however, a story has to elevated to something else. Contain some meat on the bones so to speak. Something to make the reader think or a theme that requires a different point of view. Character development beyond the cardboard cutouts needed for the attraction-interaction-intercourse chain of events of a sex romp. That's my feeling anyway.

Love the kimono, Caspai.

I find that the are elements of both Caspai and Honey's answers that I agree with.

For me the mind has to be engaged. Not only with the use of language, plot and setting, and character development. All of these are only the builder's stones. There must be a quality of reality. W e must believe that the characters exist. They and their actions must touch and move us. Weather those actions repel us or engage us.

For me it must have the ring of truth, reality. This often requires that the characters be flawed, not perfect. These imperfections in the Character's make up cause conflict. This conflict or inner struggle, is what makes the difference. It makes us think, "What we do, feel, or say".

All else is a sex-romp.

new

{ not dressed apropriately.... enters wearing heavy blue jeans torn off at the bottom,a tattered blue and yellow striped shirt and a base ball cap. his hair hangs down just under his ears, but it's knappy and tattered much like his jeans. the un-natural blonde in his hair was sooo aparent that it made his heavy black eybrows stand out on his long but strong face. he was red in his cheeks and his eye's were wild like fire and brimstone. it could have been all that he had ever felt and seen in his crazy life, or it could have been the liquer. he was obviously drunk!}

"heeey there.... um am i interupting? well... then.. just let me.....

"(sits down hard on the floor....legs crossed out in front of him, leaning back on his palms}"

"sit down!... tell me, where am i?.... i mean who are you? just let me know if i'm.... bothering you?"

"he looks at the pretty girl next to him.... his eye's asking the question [ may i bother you]"

Angel enters wearing her new red silk dress with the dragon print, and bows respectfully to her old and new friends.

Thank you for asking for opinions about the difference between a sex romp and erotica.

Well, for me, erotica is something that takes great pleasure in delighting all the senses… it weaves its web slowly, and with care for the feelings of its characters. It stimulates the imagination with sensuous imagery and it leaves the reader, viewer, or listener pining for more and wondering 'what next'. It takes time to explore, to fascinate and to delight.

A sex romp is exactly what it sounds like… fun, and something that is not long lasting. Yes, it makes the heart pound... but the feeling is fleeting.

Even the words 'sex romp' don’t roll off the tongue as delightfully as the word 'erotica' does.

tmuyo you are a gracious host.

I hope to return tommorro for more conversation.

May be something more suited to philosiphers to drink.

I bow taking leave of my host.

as the conversation continues around him, he is taken aback... he thought for sure he would noticed by now. drunk... all he really wanted was a place to crash for the night. he had no shame in being a flop, in fact took pride that work was always the last resort for him. he thought [well maybe theese people won't even notice if i pass out right here on the floor.] although he was far from the time he would need to do that. the thought of just sitting there on the floor suddenly unnerved him and he sprang to his feet.

"hi i'm chance.

"he stepped in front of one of the conversationalists that didn't cease their conversation for a second... to say hello or offer him a pillow. he wasn't sure witch one because with beer glasses on it's hard to know who your talking too. he thrust his hand out and took up their hand. his hands were warm but there wasn't much behind the shake. his body swayed as much as his hand and he was obviously not of the world in which he had entered. [ all i really want is for someone to offer me a beer he thought to himself] he let the hand go and continued to stare directly into the object of his attention, whoever or whatever it may be.

Well, hello there my cute little kitty cat. Welcome to LIT. We have been discussing the difference between writing erotica and a sex romp. The tone of this quiet mediative teahouse tends towards the more thoughtful. If your taste runs to lighter conversation come with me to the China Pearl. I've said my piece here. I'll even buy you a drink.

Looking expectantly at Felix

Good evening you sir I have just come from the CHINA PERAL it is under siege by Mayla Pirates. We need all the help we can get.

tmuyo any help would be an aid. Swash is on the way but who knows.

Ignoring the activity around me...

Wearing a kimono of black silk with detailed with red dragons gilded with threads of gold, I approach the master Samurai.
Reaching him I fall to my knees, touching my head to the floor...

In a whisper meant to be heard only by him

"Please accept this small gift as apology for my late arrival. I can not stay, I must go, my help is needed to protect my home. May peace be with you. I shall return"

Again I enter Meijii Inn. Dressed as a traveler, a searcher of wisdom, you might say as a Questioner. I bow to my host tmuyo. My head lower than his.

Gracious host I have returned may I recline in the seclude corner. To listen watch?

I recline to she what the day brings. Tea soothes my troubled spirit.

Yesterday the topic was concerned Erotica

slipping in and sitting on the pillow, I sip the Geen tea.....

" I think in general everyone agreed that erotica touched the mind in a way that a sex romp does not. Honey brought up the concept of class, but what about gender. Do you think the female verse the male brain plays a part in what we find as Erotica?"

Rushes in and sees Faith sipping oon her tea. Unsure what he wants he settles for a gin tonic for now.

"Hello Faith" (warm smile)

You really keep us on our toes here. Having read both male and female erotica both on- and offline I would tend to think that the answer is no, there is no difference. The difficult part is that you need to compare works from two different authors in the first place.
Alas, I would think that as long as it is Erotica (and not a sex romp) male and female Erotica are very much alike. Obviously, one usually can tell the gender of an author from her or his works (usage of language, level of detail in their description) - I am not referring to that - but both genders produce similar works, since the main subject - what is going on in the mind of the parties involved - is I think rather similar.
Description of what is going on in the mind is key - and I think (or I shall hope, may I say) that on that level females and males are much more akin then commonly believed.

Dirk to a degree I agree with you that they are the same for both men and women in the general sense. For the mind has to be engaged.

I believe underlying the general question is this. What engages the mind of a man vs. what engages the mind of a woman? As in foreplay they're our common areas of enjoyment. But also areas of differences. Some enjoy giving most, other receiving most, and for some it is mutual sharing.

It is true that we are all the same because we are people. Like wise difference because we are individuals. We may all respond to the same things but in different ways and I believe gender is an important factor.

C G returns to his tea. His travelers walking staff leaning close to hand in the corner.

Interesting point you are raising CG, if I understand you right the actual differences are not so much in the gender but in our (possibly changing) sensual needs and preferences ? I would totally agree with that.
And if one assumes that certain preferences or needs are commonly attributed to either one of the genders, I think the loop closes.
Now, did that make any sense at all ? I sure hope so :)

i look up from my meditation and see that there are many more guests since i began my meditation.

thank you all for visiting my humble inn. feel free to stay any time. i provide drinks for those who need them and join the converstation.

simply put, i believe erotica to be somehting that involves more than your physical body. it is somethign that needs emotions and the mind to feel, understand, and express them through the body.

Blinking at Tmuyo's word's...

I grin... "Boy are you ever good at that meditation...lol"
Pouring a green tea for Tmuyo, with a wink and smile of thanks for giving us this place I say...

"Okay, Tmuyo, CG and Dirk, I agree with what you've said but when you read something do you prefer to read something that's written from the point of view of a man or a woman? Not the Author's gender but character's gender or does it matter at all?"
