The contractor who laid new bathroom tile was inspired to ask, "We're going to rip out this old window, right?" Wrong. It's one of the few things his crew didn't break.

Another ingenious device from our friends in Japan, Toto is a water-conserving toilet that actually works! No, really. It does. The entire flushing process takes less than four seconds, from the merest touch of a fingertip on Toto's polished chrome lever to the final triumphant gurgle. Magnificent, and almost worth the 45 maddening days of an epic bathroom renovation that was supposed to take one week.

(Never, under any circumstances, invite men with hammers inside your house. Ceiling collapsed? Floors sagging? Giant poison toads taking over laundry room? Pretend you're camping.)
