True. Crust is now thick and doughy.Has anyone noticed that McDonald’s apple pies from 20 years ago were so much better? Better crust? So much more of the pie filling?
It’s the cooking method! The longest-standing (and 2nd ever) McDonald’s location in Downey, CA is the only one in the US that still deep-fries their apple pies instead of baking them.Has anyone noticed that McDonald’s apple pies from 20 years ago were so much better? @Kitty_so_frisky wait…what?! They’re BAKED now?!It’s the cooking method! The longest-standing (and 2nd ever) McDonald’s location in Downey, CA is the only one in the US that still deep-fries their apple pies instead of baking them.
I haven’t eaten a burger from McD’s in over 20 years, but when I had a specialist Dr appointment scheduled in that area last year, I had to stop by for a fried apple pie!
(It’s a bit blurry, but if you look closely, the green strip on the packaging says “FRIED APPLE”)

Yup! Apparently they switched to baked in 1992 in an effort to be healthier, except the oldest location and apparently in Hawaii, because the baked pies weren’t well-received there!@Kitty_so_frisky wait…what?! They’re BAKED now?!ugh…no wonder…it all makes sense now…now that I stop and think about it, how did I never realize they’re baked? Makes all the difference!!
They switched to baking in an effort to make it more healthy, which is kinda silly for a fast food chain that still fries their French fries and pink slime nuggs, among other things. No idea what the cost breakdown is…probably longer cooking time, but no oil needed…Its the same with their other items and most US food in general. Hell they used to cook fries in tallow. Now like everyone else they have found cheaper and less healthy alternatives. And we wonder why everyone is ill.
