it is spelled McAfee and it is better because Norton can slow your system down tremendously

Norton

I have used both, but prefer Norton only because McAfee seemed to conflict with another program I had installed.

I am running nothing because I am on OSX on a Mac, an OS similiar to UNIX, someday there will viruses on the Mac like a PC, but until then. Maybe I will take Norton over Virex, since Virex is not robust in deatures such as Norton. Norton has a way of installing extras your computer does not need, but you can also do a custom install. I just want an anti-virus program to function and run in the background. Biggest issue is that Norton is a memory hogger and at 640 mb's of ram, I could care less, but I still do.

If you want to know the pros and cons, go to http://www.cnet.com and check out the reviews. BTW, shouldn't this be in the "how to" forum?

Essentially, each has it's strong points. But there are others out there like Dr. Solomon, and Dr. Panda which also have a decent reputation and shouldn't be dismissed.

Essentially, the AV companies confer, and the virus definitons are shared the difference is the engine.

Where I work, we have in the neighborhood of 5000 PCs. We're using Norton for it's support, responsiveness and flexability

Hope that helps :)

Norton is MUCH better.

I am a computer consultant and have no affiliation with either Symantec (who makes Norton's Anti-Virus product) or McAfee. I have tested both products and have been required to support both programs. In my opinion there is no comparison, Norton is MUCH better. There are many reasons that I could list as to why Norton is the best, but I think there is 1 factor that is, by itself, reason enough to go with Norton. This feature is called "Live Update". Live Update is a built in feature in Norton Anti-Virus that will automatically download any new virus definitions that are available any time that you are connected to the internet. This makes it so you do not have to worry about remembering to update you definitions...Norton does this automatically for you.

Well, I hate to rain on your parade, but having heard friends and acquaintances complain about both programs, I've heard far more complaints about Norton.

And as to the live update, I'm using McAfee 4.x and I have it scheduled to check the Network Associates ftp site daily for updates to the virus signature. Have been for two years or more. It downloads the newest signature files, and if you run a network, it allows you to keep the downloaded signatures file and update every station on your net automatically from a single download session.

I'd guess Norton probably has similar features.

My REAL bitch about McAfee V6 is that it REQUIRES MS IE 6 installed on your system to install McAfee V6. I don't use IE and hate the idea of having to install it just to install the McAfee Internet Security software. But I may have to bite the bullet and give in.

Neither, but

If I had to choose just between them, then McAfee
Nortons is Memory hungry

Both have live updates

I use PC-Cillan, it's better, cheaper and I also get the updates, almost daily for minor ones

McAfee are branching out to cover Lotus Notes and Unix

So are PC-Cillan which is Trend Micro
They also (like McAfee) have an online virus scan available

Indeed, since the virus signature files are all shared, the differences are the efficiency and overhead of the engine. On the other hand, there's always heuristic scanning, which detects viruslike activity instead of just specific viruses. I'm not sure if either of the big 2 do it, but I think PC-cillin and several other relatively unknown ones do.

I am very anti-Norton too. The "live update" did no such thing as described above. I had to specifically do an intentional download. And since I elected to NOT repurchase the damned thing, it locks my computer up every night at midnight with the fucking ad telling me they want my money. This is reason enough for me NEVER EVER purchase the product again. (I had intended to before, but after being pissed off enough at that, I won't and am sure to tell everyone everywhere who is willing to listen. )
The only good thing I have seen about norton and the only reason I haven't removed it is the adblocking. I don't have to see that disgusting "cumdrinker" ad on here.

MacAffee came loaded on my PC, but it didn't detect the kak worm & I got the worm at least 3 times. We installed the Norton & I haven't had any problems since. I haven't noticed any slow down in my system.

I agree with Dragonette here. Trend Micro's PC-Cillin scoops the editors awards and readers choice awards. 2-3 updates per week and PC catches viruii that MacAfee and Nortons let thru.
Plus on-line live scan, one of the best products out there.

Sophos kicks ass!

Found them by chance on the net a few years ago, based in the UK with an office in Boston, and all of the updates are emailed ahead of the viruses - can't ask for more than that. Oh, good customer service in case you do get infected.

I use both... Norton on my lap top and McAfee on the PC... I don't see much difference in the two... I don't use my laptop much on the net and I don't usually open email on it... and the one time someone sent me a virus encoded email, McAfee caught it....

Of course I do regular updates on both...

I did evaluations

For work, before I was made redundant, I researched and evaluated them all

For our specific network etc

Sophos could not do what we wanted, or for the price.

PC-Cillan for me does it all
I get updates by just clicking, and it was cheaper than the others.

I used to prefer McAfee, with their live Backdoor upgrade, but this one is so much easier and has caught everything.
It does h/d's, web. email, real time etc

Check out the online scan

Chuckles

But, the worst virus than none will catch is the Irish one!

You have just received the "Irish Virus" !!!!!

As we don't have any programming experience, this virus works on the honor system. Please delete all the files from your hard drive and manually forward this virus to everyone on your mailing list.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Confused!!!

I need to replace my AV software as I'm currently running Norton 2002 on a 30 day trial. Strangely the trial is not available from the Symantec UK site only Symantec US.

When I saw the thread header I thought maybe there'd be a clear winner to aid my choice. Having read everything posted so far I'm more confused. We used to run Dr Solomons at work but they were bought out and the brand changed name in the UK. I think it's rebadged VirusScan but the interface is poor. Mind you Norton's is fairly pants too. Too yellow.

I guess all products have their foibles so it's a case of pick one and give it a go. I think I'll look into PC-Cillin and Sophos as I've heard good things about both here and professionally.

Nice new feature, PC-Cillin has had it since its 98 version. No other Anti-Virus company has a "Live online scan" either.
I wouldn't say that Nortons is number 1. It may outsell the others, because of its name. It is one of the longest established companies around. They have the largest advertising budget, but #1 ...I differ in opinion.

PLEASE NOTE: We sell all 3 at work, this is my own personal opinion and recommendation only. I use PC-Cillin on Win 2000 Pro. I have NEVER had a virus on my machines in 6 years of computing. The key is, whatever prog you use, keep it updated religiously.
