Older man, does something heroic, gets the "girl" (she's fortyish). They leave town together and live together. In a few weeks it seems clear they are each the best thing which has ever happened, for the other. Meanwhile, the heroic action results in legal difficulties. They leave the state. Things only get better, interpersonally, but the world is one big trap, waiting to be sprung, now that one police department in one state wants to question the fellow.

I'm not sure how to make it play out, from here. But I'm writing.

What you didn't tell us was the nature of the "legal difficulties." Until that's settled, it will be tough to have them face the challenge. As is, the story could be anything from a Thelma & Louise to Smokey and the Bandit.
