Kihei, sunny Kihei, on the SW coast is a great place... but I have to admit I enjoyed the drive to Hana, too. Do get up Haleakala regardless of where you stay.

Seriously, though, you should try the Maui downhill bike ride from Haleakala, and definitely take a snorkeling side trip to Molokini crater. Lahaina is fun, but friggin HOT (the name means "blistering sun" or some such).

It is a long ass drive, but if you have any sort of affinity for waterfalls, its not to be missed.

I don't know why I have been thinking about Maui all day now. I take back what I said, it's beautiful there.

I however ... went over Thanksgiving. I was already very tan when we arrived. I spent the first day at a nude beach. Later that day I had the worst case of food poisoning in my life. Two days later I lost my contacts. So I had to buy glasses. Which left me feeling like a naughty school teacher on the beach. But now that I have thought about it and looked over some pictures I took...on the way to Hana, before the 7 Pools..there is a little town there where we pulled over to..the name escapes me now. But I swear I saw God there. I’m not religious, but I saw him. I walked up this vine covered arch stairway, to a look out that was so pristine. A small church in the valley, green fields all the way to the ocean...

I've never been to Maui, but I've been to Honolulu 3 times. I even stayed there for a summer two years ago.

I loved that drive! But it is definitely not a drive for anyone prone to road rage. You aren't going ANYWHERE fast on that road.

haven't been to maui (yet) but have been to Oahu eight times and The Big Island once. Can tell you both are good places. If you're looking for a place to crash on the beach, Maui is probably a better bet, but if you're looking for more touristy type of things to do, I suggest Oahu.
