Bob and Fred are retired and more than a little bi-curious. They can’t find a place that’s private enough to get started because their wives are always home. Fred has an idea: he has done yard work for Pat, a widow several houses down. She has a detached garage. He creates a pretext for Pat to allow him to use her garage to work on a project in there with Bob.

Pat eventually catches them el flagrante, but instead of being horrified, likes to watch and suggests they become an on-going threesome. As the series progresses, the three seniors pursue different adventures: ABS, young handyman, swinger party, etc.

You've got an evergreen story plot there, and with the aging populace you're fitting into their world view. Hard part (pun unavoidable) will be to keep things in their worldview, to make the references they would make, the stars and arts and events they remember and react to. Not too many tweet, or tiktok, or fill-in-the-blank...

NOOOO! I feel like I got gut punched reading this.

Ok, that aside, it sounds like a good idea. Like usuallypresent said, if you can write it while maintaining historical context and dress it for the time period, that'd be something in itself. I'd probably even read it even though I'm not into the category and am personally reluctant to fiddle with Dumas (Hollywood's done enough).

But don't let me stop you, because I also agree that you'll probably find plenty of people interested in reading the familliar setting and characters reimagined. Now if you suggested Cervante' s Don Quixote, I'd say: color blast that sucker and see how it comes out!

Or, maybe make it less fan-fiction sourced and simply emulate the style. Looks like you're already doing that for the most part so... drop the three? I now wonder why Dumas' work is constantly revived and no one's made something original along the same vein. People have made tons of original stories using templars, gladiators, samurai, conquistadors, ninjas, pirates and legionaires. But for some reason musketeers have to come in threes... It'd be nice if there was more work that wasn't so derivative of Dumas to be honest. But i guess mainstream expects it. Just like it's hard to find a classic tragedy redone or created that isn't Shakespearean. Can no one else write about a Danish King? 😁

ObTopic: I flashed on "Mature Three MOUSE-keteers" but, except Annette, they were all underage when prominent and so can't be written of here. I *think* Annette was 18+ for all Beach Party flix. Hey, set the OP's oldsters in a nude beach party scenario. Ride ride ride the wild surfers till they break. But no shots of Don Rickles naked.

Did it ever bother the rest of you that the Musketeers never used muskets? Always swords? That always seemed like false advertising to me.

Indeed. Yet they all had flintlock pistols right when they were needed most.

Well, I seem to recall they did, albeit in just one scene they stayed in defense of some ruined fort. That scene wasn't very memorable and carried minimal weight plot-wise, rather was just a random illustration of the on-duty action.

Muskets are rather cumbersome weapons of war replacing pike (and NOT a bow) usually used in larger scale group maneuvers. It isn't actually suitable for the social off-duty situations most of the story is about.

While I love a good literary allusion as much as the next writer, The Three Musketeers is no more than an off-hand term Pat might use to humorously describe their little threesome before they left for the nude beach, the strip club, or the gloryhole. She might have used “The Three Amigoes,” but that doesn’t have the same cachet.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions/commentary.

Neither does "Three Little Piggies" or "The Three Bears".

Back to my earlier tangent.
  • 3 Musketeers -- better whip out those muskets
  • 3 Masketeers -- in Mickey Mouse masks
  • 3 Mousketeers -- no, too young for LIT
  • 3 Moosketeers -- Bullwinkle, cloned
Shoot me now. No, wait till after the threesome.

  • 3 Muskyteers - animorphic skunks 'sword'fighting. Ware the busted baculum!
  • 3 Musky Tears - A triplex hottub doused in essence of scared skunk, complete with the blind groping around trying to find the way back home and refilling the tub with tomato juice
Shoot me now. No, wait till after the threesome.

Why? Unless we're talking shooting you up with appropriate bioactive materials, I personally enjoy your wackiness! :nana:

Caffeine, like most fun &/or tasty chemicals, is the toxin of a plant desperately begging to be left alone. Similarly chocolate, horseradish, etc. So - don't necessarily blame JUST the wasps' venom for your 'special' powers! ;)
