Can someone help me with this -
I want to know how to calculate a carton box size. Ok, here's the problem. I have a roll of paper, inclusive of the core. I want to put it in a carton box. How do I know what size of carton box to use (width x height x length), theorytically (i hope i spelled that right). Any formula for that? Appreciate all the help,
cran

*Regretting this already*

This is the answer to the question as you phrased it. I have a feeling though that this wasn't what you had in mind:

Width(Box)=Width(Roll)+1

Height(Box)=Height(Roll)+1

Length(Box)=Length(Roll)+1

The only possible way you couldn't know the dimension of the box you need is if you plan to put the roll in diagonally? Is that what you're asking?

If so use the old Pythogorean Theorum wherein the sum of the squared sides of a right triangle are equal to the square of the hypotenuse.

In other words, if your roll is 5 feet long and you place in the box diagonally, the roll becomes the hypotenuse. You square the 5 which is 25. Therefore, the other two sides of the triangle could be 3 feet and 4 feet [because 3 squared (9) plus 4 squared (16) equals 5 squares (25)]. Make 3 feet the height of the box (one side of the right triangle), and that makes 4 feet the measure between one corner of the box and the diagonal corner on the same plane (the last side of the right triangle).

Now, to get the length and width you have to use the formula again, using the flat plane diagonal measurement 4 feet as the hypotensue, and the other two sides of the right triangle being the length and width of the box. You can use whatever combination you like. Let's say you make the width also 3 feet. That means the length would have to be (roughly) a little over 2 and a half feet.

Of course, a roll of paper isn't a single, thin, imaginary geometric line, so you'll have to figure in some wiggle room.

I'm SURE there's a better way to do this, and maybe someone out there who has actually taken geometry this decade can help.

Unless of course you're NOT planning to put it in diagonally. In which case, ignore the hell out of me and go with Flagg's good idea, which is, basically, to buy a ruler.

*whimpers and curls into a fetal position*

Do you know why I like porn?

BECAUSE THERE'S NO GODDAMNED MATH INVOLVED!

*small sigh* You know I had a 1.8 GPA last semester for failing the same remedial math course three fucking times in one year? That does it.. I now know where to go for help the next time I try to take that course. *Wry smile*

LOL! Oh, there's plenty of math in porn. Like the people who over-describe their characters with phrase like: "She had a 35 inch chest with a 22 inch waist and a 10 inch deep pussy which meant my 7.6 inch cock would have 2.4 inches of thrusting buffer. 'Screw me again, and again, and again!' she cried, and after computing the appropriate amount of sperm needed for multiple attempts, I mounted her. As our train pulled out of Philadelphia doing 20 miles per hour I knew her husband's train left Chicago doing 30. 'How much time does that give us?' she asked, heaving her bosom. 'Let me get my slide rule, baby.' I said..."

I knew that math degree was a babe magnet!

The most efficient box is the inscribed cylinder route recommended by Flagg.

If, however, you want to go the diagonal route, it will take some calculating. The method of DCL does contain a slight flaw due to the roll having finite width, ie. if you make the diagonal of the box the same as the length of the roll you will end up with the edges of the roll hanging over the sides.

The simplest diagonal would be to make a square box that has a height equal to the diameter of the roll. To figure the sides required of the square box takes a little math using two different isosceles right triangles. First, take the length of the roll and square it. Divide the square in half and then take the square root of the result. Call this quantity "A".
Take the diameter of the roll and square it. Divide this square in half and then take the square root of the result. Call this quantity "B".
The sides of your box should then be equal to the quantity of A + B. Give yourself a little slop on each dimension and you are home free.

Using a three-dimensional diagonal starts with constructing a right pyramid with a square base that circumsribes the circular end of the roll. This circumscription does not require a rabbi, but an exorcist might come in handy. This is a helluva lot of work and you end up with a really oversized box.

Mathematicians meausure penis size in units of volume, thank you. We have to use displacement of water as a method. I have broken several Erlenmeyer flasks trying to get my balls through the top. Group Theory and Strange Attractors are the best attempts to bridge the gap between Math and Porn.

LMAO!

Dixon, I'm so totally with you there.. It's weird, but for some reason the mention of ANY stat-- breast size, penis length, whatever, any number-- turns me off to an erotic story.

It must be the math thing. Maybe I need a little tutoring..

TQ

Why thank you for those er...solutions. Goodness, no wonder i am so darn lousy in maths..i can't even understand some of the mathematical terms. sigh...Smooches to all you guys,
cran

Pfft.
Don't listen to these guys.
Just find a box that looks like it's the right size and cram it in there.
Cardboard is no match for your muscles.. and if the tube bursts through the cardboard you can call is conseptual art and make money off of it.

Math an Porn.....hummmmmm

If it takes John 85 thrusts to reach a climax and Mary sucks at 1.2 lengths per second, how long will it be before Mary makes John come? For extra credit, what is the total equivalent length of John's cock that she has taken in if his cock is 7.5 inches long? (Please show your work.)

It will take Mary 141.66(recurring) seconds to suck John off. During which time she will have salivated on 1275 inches of cock.

I was bored alright.

Flagg~

You have truly proven that you know more about giving head than I do. Keep up the good work! :)

It's quotes like that that make young boys expect all women to be teeny tiny, and help girls develop eating disorders; man do I hate that.
Does anyone have an idea of how small a 22 inch waist is?

Most of the models I know have larger waists than that!
Then again, some men just have a thing for women that are 4 feet tall I guess, so if that is the case, maybe that sort of measurement would suffice?

Man, and to think if I'd taken Physics instead of philosophy I could've figured that out! :)
