I get bad cricks in my neck occasionally.

Does anyone know how to find good masseurs?
Like, is there some kind of certification to look for?

Are massages like doing drugs? The first time is always the best and you'll never reach that level of satisfaction ever again.

I've only had 3 massages in my life. The first was booked through a chiropractor's office (his recommendation) with someone he contracted with. She was amazing, she had me involuntarily sighing and moaning out loud.
He closed his practice.

The second was at a spa and the masseur was an Asian lady. I had trouble communicating with her, telling her I didn't want a full body massage. At one point she picked my leg up and tried to push it backwards. She didn't even really focus on my problem area. It was awkward and I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there.

The third one was a week ago, at a chain massage place.
The masseur spoke english and focused on my problem area, but she was pressing too hard. I should have told her, but I figured she was a professional and knew what she was doing. She had me cringing and tensing, and the next morning I felt WORSE!!

Local chain massage place was highly rated by Yelp. Everyone said "Ask for Elena!"

1st time: Had Elena, absolutely wonderful professional massage. Heaven.
2nd time: Elena was busy, I had a "sports/deep tissue" massage with Olga. She tried to tear my hip out of the socket as part of the "sports" part.
3rd time: Elena on vacation, had a rookie masseuse leave bruise marks on the back of my neck. Felt worse going out than I did going in.

So basically my results mirrored yours.

My dad took 5 strokes off his golf game after a very good reputable masseur worked on his right shoulder. Find a good one and you're laughing. All pro sports use them. That's why pro cyclist shave their legs for the post race massage.

I've read that massages release lactic acid in muscles and that helps rebuild muscle tissue. I don't care that much. I just want my neck to feel better, and to stop doing the michael keaton batman head turn. I'm gonna call my GP Monday and ask for a recommendation.

YOU GUYS ARE NO HELP!!!

This is the worst time of year for neck/back/shoulder issues. Maybe seduce a physical therapist.

Ask friends for recommendations. Ask on FB! If you're hurting they want to know, because it shouldn't hurt bad. Maybe a good sore press to start, deepening as time goes and you loosen up. It shouldn't start out deep. I've had massages for 30 years and good and bad all in between. Speak up.

Neck injuries are the worst. They take for-fucking-ever to heal up.
I had a physical therapist give me three specific exercises, one for C3 injuries, one for C4 and one for C5.

Massages release lactic acid that's why it's really important to drink lots of water afterwards to flush that out of you or you can be sore from the lactic buildup.

I think massage rids the muscles of lactic acid.

When I had a pinched nerve in neck/shoulder they put a heated padded collar on me. And stretched my neck via a weight hung over the back of a door for half an hour.

Cold reduces swelling. Heat heals. Get one of those heatable padded thingys for neck and shoulders.

Yeah, I should have spoken up, but I didn't know. I'm a massage newb!

I did ask one friend, she offered me some muscle relaxers and prednisone. I don't want to take her drugs though.

I was uding one of those herbal rice neck pillows you put in the microwave, but the smell of clove and all spice and rice started to make me nauseous after a few days, and I got tired of heating the damned thing every hour. I bought some thermacare thingies, pretty much hot hands with a sticker, they're nice.

Forward fold, just let my neck dangle down, that helps.

If you have a TENS unit use that, on your pussy lips, it'll make you forget about cricked neck.

Tuck chin in. Straightens neck up. Posture is huge for neck issues.

Doc had me on prescription strength ant-inflammatories. And gave okay to take as many Tylenol as I wanted for the pain. Many docs might have handed out a Perk script. Glad he didn't.

Had a friend. Nicest girl you want to meet. Kindergarten teacher. Never did drugs, smoked and rarely drank. Threw out her back somehow. Doc gave her 3 months of Perks. She was hooked after that. Went through family savings and was looking around downtown for street drugs. Ruined her marriage. Union saved her job. Better now and back to normal except for massive guilt.

Probably only needed a weeks worth of Perks and some anti-inflammatories. Stupid doc fucked up her life.

Docs told me, if in actual pain you can't become addicted. Its when the pain is gone and you keep taking them that gets you hooked.

Avoid Perks, Oxies and shit if at all possible. Deal with the pain as best you can.

Sex bruises are good bruises (punk)

I like the way you think

I had a disc in my neck removed and a graduated screw put in because of bulge that had calcified and was touching my spinal cord. I was told to take 3 months off work. I lasted 3 weeks (had a desk job then) It was one of the least painful surflgeries I have ever had.

Every massage therapist is certified. It's legally required in each state, as far as I'm aware. So, finding a therapist who works well for you can be a process. Read reviews, try different spas...find someone you feel comfortable communicating with, but also someone who just intuitively seems to know where and how to put their hands to make you feel better. It would suck to be constantly correcting someone throughout the massage when part of the idea is to relax. It'll probably take time, and, in general, I'd suggest staying away from chain places. But, one never knows. You could strike gold at one.

And, no, unless you speak up, the person touching you will not know if they're pressing too hard or not hard enough. Every human body is different with varying preferences as to pressure.

Yeah, ALWAYS speak up. The masseuse has no idea how much pressure you can take, and depending on your condition it might be far more or less in some places than others. Think about a range of pressure from 1 to 10. Start around five or six and increase or decrease based on the immediate sharpness of any pain.

The point of deep tissue massage is to steadily increase pressure on specific pressure points for several minutes so that that muscle group starts to relax. One of the best things I've found is "foam rolling." I do it religiously for my lower back, but have also recently discovered how much I've been neglecting my vastus lateral muscle on the outside of my thigh. These always tighten up after I walk continuously for 10 or 15 minutes, and foam rolling them really hurts. But I know from experience that it is a "good" hurt and that I just need to gently keep after it on a daily basis.

You need to identify problem areas like this to your therapist. Describe in detail the ranges of motion you can and cannot do.

Don't try to do massage "on the cheap." Go to a reputable health spa or massage school.

It may not even be massage that is needed. Could be counter-productive. See doc first.

Can you look over your shoulder post-surgery, like when you're getting on an interstate ramp to merge?

I went to physical therapy 3 times they said I had better range Than could be ever expected. I know what you're asking, but yes. I just kinda tell myself that I'm good, and I am.

After a deep massage lactic acid is released and one is advised to flush it out with tons and tons of water.
