Marxism is a dying ideology. Except for a few aging adherents the only people who take it seriously are conservatives and reactionaries who defame their liberal opponents by calling them "Marxists."

The Zapatistas in Mexico didn't even call themselves Marxists. They almost certainly would have, if their rebellion had begun 20 or even 10 years earlier. Chavez in Venezuela called his revolution "Bolivarian," whatever that might be (certainly Simon Bolivar was no socialist). The name of Marx appears to have lost its power to conjure.

"Ism's" of all kinds, such as racism and sexism, evolve over time as people use their own interpretations on them for a new dispensation; for instance, things that were not considered sexist before such as opening a door for a lady, are considered sexist by many today.
When it comes to Marxism, many of the Twitter mobs that call for this person to be shut down, and that person to be cancelled, just by coincidence, tend to consider themselves Marxists. It is "cultural Marxism" at work.

Karl Marx had two valid insights. He was mistaken about everything else. A political thinker should be read for insight, rather than doctrine. This requires one to evaluate the political thinker at his or her level. Most people either like what the thinker writes, and assume that it is all true, or they dislike it, and assume that it is all false.
