This is a new game idea for an alternate version of the Marvel Universe. In this reality, Mutants are not holders of evolutionary powers, but children of genetic engineering.
Prelude to a Crisis...
In the early 1960s, a young boy named Howard Stark amazed and intrigued the judges of several science fairs with his brilliant ideas and designs. Certified a genius, he was in college before he was old enough to drive. There, he shocked the professors as his intellect continued to grow.
By the age of 22, Howard had graduated with advanced degrees in science and engineering. A much older scientist named Justin Hammer took the young man under his wing, and together they formed Hammer Industries.
Through out the 1970s, Howard Stark made many breakthroughs in computer science and robotics engineering. However, in 1979, his new wife Maria said Justin Hammer had too much control over him, and Howard finally agreed. Thus, in 1982, only months before the birth of his son Anthony, and after years of planning, Howard created Stark Industries. Hammer was furious because most of his military funding went to Stark.
Howard made many more scientific breakthroughs, and steadily climbed the ladder to become one of the richest men in the world. His son, Tony, was showing signs of his father's intellect. He was a student at MIT before he even hit puberty, and studied most of the same fields his father had.
Origin of the Syndrome...
Shortly after forming his company, Howard Stark had hired Dr. Obadiah Stane to work on producing an effective method for genetically enhancing soldiers. Secretly, Stane shared his research with Justin Hammer, who created an isolated lab in Nevada to perform illegal experiments.
In the summer of 1996, there was a massive break out in the lab, and in an effort to prevent the Mutants from escaping, Justin Hammer ordered the lab to be self-destructed. Several of the Mutants managed to escape, but the rest were destroyed in the blast. In an unforeseen turn of events, the blast somehow carried traces of the mutated blood into the air, eventually spreading it across most of North America.
The government became aware of the blast, but any traces leading it to Justin Hammer had been destroyed in the explosion. Over the weeks to come, people closest to the blast began to develop abnormal abilities. By 1997, it was called the Mutant Syndrome, and the mysterious lab was being referred to as Point Zero.
About 64% of the people closest to the blast were mutated, but that percentage decreased farther from Point Zero. In some villages of South America, roughly 7% were mutated. The Syndrome managed to make it over to Europe and Asia, but only a few hundred cases were reported. It eventually effected Australia and Africa as well, but there were less than a dozen known cases in these areas.
Threat of the Unknown...
Many of the Mutants began using their powers to commit crimes, and some came together to form various gangs. Throughout the late 90s, the world was plagued by these "Mutant Gang Wars." Even though some Mutants tried to be heroes and stop the evil ones, the general populace came to believe that all Mutants would eventually turn evil.
To combat this threat, the US Government established S.H.I.E.L.D. - the Superhuman Hazard Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. Once Tony Stark returned from MIT and started making advanced weapons, S.H.I.E.L.D. provided him with even more funding to outfit their agents. Secretly, Howard felt somehow responsible for the Syndrome, even though he had no clue Obadiah Stane was being paid by Justin Hammer to sabotage Stark Industries.
With Tony Stark's weapons, armor, and various warfare gadgets, Nick Fury led S.H.I.E.L.D. to slay the rogue Mutants. Between 2001 and 2007, hundreds of thousands of Mutants were brutally slaughtered. Some Mutants went into hiding, others fled the country, but some stood their ground and declared they were not villains, that they were good people. Sadly, Nick Fury suffered not a single Mutant he encountered to live, regardless of their claims.
In early 2007, Dr. Bruce Banner, who was working as an assistant to Dr. Stane, overheard him talking on the phone with Justin Hammer, and thus told Howard Stark. After trapping Stane in his office and injecting him with a truth serum, he told them all about Point Zero and the origin of the Syndrome. They also discovered that the newer versions of the Super Solider Serum, which were being kept secret, had also been sent to Hammer, who in turn had deliberately created more Mutants to unleash upon the world.
Howard Stark and Bruce Banner, knowing they had contributed to the Syndrome, felt intense bouts of guilt, but could not turn in Stane for fear of S.H.I.E.L.D. coming after them. So, instead, they trapped him in the basement of the Stark Complex. However, it was soon realized there were other moles, for some of Hammer's villains knew right where to strike to free Stane.
Later that week, well after midnight, Stark Manor was attacked by a gang of Mutants hired by Hammer. Howard and Maria were killed, and the house suffered major damage. Edwin Jarvis, their butler, managed to escape, and traveled in the shadows to Tony Stark's Malibu mansion to inform him of the events that had occurred.
The next day, Bruce informed Tony of all that had happened with the Syndrome, and they both became determined to try harder at vanquishing the Mutants. Tony became the new CEO of Stark Industries, at age 24.
Over the next year, Tony and Bruce worked long hours trying to create an Anti-Syndrome that would reverse mutation. Meanwhile, Hammer continued to create more Mutants, and despite the efforts of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Mutant Gang Wars continued.
Finally frustrated and desperate enough to stop the Mutant gangs, Bruce Banner created a super potent version of the serum, and injected himself with it. He started having seizures and then fell into a coma, where he would remain for several months.
After visiting Bruce in the hospital, Tony decided to take a similar route, but not by becoming a Mutant -- he wanted to become a super-armed Mutant hunter. Thus, over the next three months, he worked non-stop on building a power suit to combat the threat. After several inferior attempts, he finally created the Mark III, which was made of a gold titanium alloy. He had only his most trusted associates line his brain with cybernetic implants, thus letting him interface wirelessly with the suit's operating system.
It took Tony several days to adjust to the new frame of mind, but once he did, he piloted the suit and began secretly fighting the Mutants. Rather quickly, however, pictures of him in his suit were all over the media. They came to call him Iron Man, a name which he accepted. He had Stark Manor, which had been in ruins since his parents' deaths, remodeled as his new base of operations as Iron Man. Only those closest to him knew the truth at that time.
In March 2009, after nearly a year as Iron Man, Tony decided to reveal his identity to squash the rumors that Iron Man was a Mutant. He explained about the suit and his ongoing mission. Shortly after, he was contacted by S.H.I.E.L.D., who wanted him to make more suits for them. At first he agreed, and made a second suit for Jim Rhodes, who became War Machine. However, after a large aerial battle, Tony crash landed in a Montana forest.
Truth of the Mutants...
Tony was nursed back to health by the group of Mutants hiding in the forest, which convinced him that not all Mutants were evil, and after repairing his suit, planned to prove that to the world. He left, and managed to convince Rhodes and S.H.I.E.L.D. of his beliefs as well.
Although still slightly skeptical, Nick Fury organized the Avenger Initiative, giving Tony Stark the task of assembling a team of his so-called "Good Mutants" to help S.H.I.E.L.D. Since Stark Manor had many guest rooms, and was already well equipped as Iron Man's headquarters, Tony invited the people who had protected him and nursed him back to health to come live at the Manor.
They invited other Mutants who they knew were not evil to join the team, but many refused to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. Those who did join were granted rooms at the Manor, all of which were master suites with their own full bathrooms. They gathered in the Great Hall with Nick Fury, and began discussing the main focus of the team.
As The Story Unfolds...
As the game starts, it's October 31st, 2009. The Avengers have been working together for about three months, deployed on various missions and hunting expeditions. Halloween has always been a rough time for those hunting Mutants, as they tend to be extra dangerous on the spooky holiday. Tony Stark is sure there will be some kind of chaos, and has the Avengers ready to strike at a moment's notice.
Tony is proven right when a group of large robots calling themselves the Iron Mongers attack Washington DC. Worse still, upon arriving on the scene, Tony realizes the Iron Mongers have the same Arc Reactor in their chests, revealing the technology used to create them was somehow stolen from Stark...
And so, the story begins...
