My idea for this is a story centering around Captain America and the Howling Commandos during their World War II battles. In this version, the Howling Commandos is a nickname for STU-1 (Special Tactics Unit-1), part of the larger SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), a military project recruiting Mutants and other powered individuals to pilot covert operations against Axis bases and facilities with a high probability of enhanced defenses.
While most of the normal troops out fighting are men, the SSR equally allows powered females to join. The SSR is led by Army Colonel Chester Phillips, but the STU-1 team is led by Army Captain Steve Rogers, who I will be playing. In this version, he has been in the military a while prior to the start of World War II. Before being altered, he was a normal human and soldier who graduated top of his class from West Point in 1934.
In September 1939, after the Nazi invasion of Poland, US President Roosevelt secretly founded the SSR to gather intelligence on the Germans and assess the threat level and potential for enhanced Nazi troops at their disposal. Lieutenant Rogers was recruited into this early team for his expert marksmanship and unyielding determination, and quickly earned a promotion to Captain and command of STU-1.
In late 1940, while the United States officially maintained neutrality, un-uniformed operatives continued covert missions against the Axis Powers. In one fateful mission, Steve Rogers nearly died in an explosion, most of his body mutilated beyond repair. Since he knew he was likely going to die in the next few days, he volunteered to be the first human test subject for the SSR's top secret Project Rebirth.
Rogers emerged as the Army's first Super Soldier, and after the attack on Pearl Harbor the following year and America openly joining the war effort, he convinced Colonel Phillips to begin recruiting other powered individuals to the SSR. These are your characters.
