It's year 2099 and Earth has sent a colony of people to colonize Mars since the planet was running out of resources. Each person is selected and paired with a genetically compatible breeding partner in order to produce healthy, viable offspring in the new colony. Each person has an assigned role and duties to promote the betterment of the colony. They share living quarters with their partner.

In an attempt to redefine the family unit, each couple is to copulate during their assigned fertilization time. When fertilization is confirmed and an embryo is present, the couple will take leave of their assigned duties during the 9 months to care for the development of the fetus. After birth, the child will be taken to infant care and raised as a child of the colony as the breeding couple continues their assigned duties. When the child is of breeding age, he/she is then placed in the breeding system and the cycle begins again.

When not in the fertilization time, couples are free to do whatever they please with whomever they please, as long as the male takes a pill that reduces the sperm count and ensures infertility. Any bastard child will be aborted, and the couple responsible will be punished.

**Year 2100**

Air hissed as the hypersleep chamber depressurized. Kali Maxwell could feel her senses slowly come awake and aware of her surrounding. They had left Earth one year ago to embark on this brave mission as Humanity's first interplanetary colony. The technician working on her panel smiled at her when her eyes opened. The girl checking her vitals was not much older than Kali, and had blond hair and bright green eyes.

"Welcome to Mars!" She said, a little too bubbly and loud for Kali's sensitive ears. As she started to regain feeling she registered that she was moving her fingers, toes and stretching her neck a little. "Good, good. All of your vitals are normal. Did you have a peaceful sleep?" The girl asked her. Kali's mind flashed back, trying to remember. Her last memory was of them closing the lid on her chamber and between that and now was...nothing. Just black thoughtlessness.

Kali opened her mouth, but her vocal chords weren't responding. "Oops sorry, I meant to tell you that you will probably regain your speech in an hour or so. Which will be just perfect because that's when your orientation starts!"

The blonde helped her up and gave her a drink that, she explained, had nutrients and protein that she needed as well as a little energy boost. It tasted like some sort of fruit, and Kali was relieved to have something in her system. She felt so hollow and skinny. Had she really been in there for a year?

Kali was ushered into a white room that had a table like one you'd see in a doctor's office. There was a stack of neatly folded garments sitting on the table and, seeing as how she was completely nude, deduced that they were there for her to wear. Kali caught sight of herself in a mirror that was on the wall. She was taken aback as she barely recognized herself.

Her face was the same, although her cheekbones were a bit more pronounced. Her reddish-brown hair, that was shaved off before she went to sleep, now had grown to a little bit past her ears. She wasn't used to such short hair, but it didn't look half bad. She remembered that the blonde had had hair that short as well.

Her eyes traveled over the rest of her body. She stood about 5'6", her breasts thankfully hadn't changed and were the same 36C they had always been. She had lost a noticeable amount of weight and a few of her ribs were showing. She had been assured that they would be served the proper portions of food over the next few weeks to correct this. Her slender, but wide hips still remained, but her skinny waist now actually gave her an hourglass shape. Nice she thought, thinking she didn't look half bad naked anymore.

Kali slipped on the black, sports bra and matching underwear and then stepped into the grey work pants and light blue tank top. The blonde had worn a red tank top and a white medical coat. She figured they were colored based on their duties. As she wondered what light blue could mean, a man in a red t-shirt and a white medical coat came in and told her he was going to give her a physical.

Still unable to talk, she happily complied. The man seemed happy with the results and told her to follow him and he would take her to receive her personal supplies. Following him down a few white halls, he told her about the base that they were in. It was an underground bunker that was adjusted to mimic earth's gravity and was completely safe from the outside elements. There would be excursions in a week to the surface of Mars, and Kali could feel the excitement building as she fully took in where she was.

The doctor dropped her off to wait in line with other people who looked just as confused as her. They must have just woken up too. There were a few others in light blue like her, but there was a mixture of other colors, including yellow, white, black, orange, green and so on. When it was her turn The man behind the table asked for her ID. She looked at him confused, and he sighed and grabbed her left wrist, turning it up.

Kali's eyes widened when she noticed small white lines raised on her wrist like a tattoo. They weren't letters or numbers but a series of different sized lines that covered a good two inches of her forearm. They must have meant something to the man, because he held a small glass holo-tablet over her wrist. It beeped and revealed a picture of her with the words Maxwell, Kalinda and a bunch of smaller print she couldn't decipher.

"Alright Maxwell, here is your holotab. Keep this with you at all times, it will send you updates and messages that will be vital to your survival and duties here. The first message will have your Living Pod assignment and a map, showing you where you will find it. In your Pod you will meet your partner and begin orientation with him. All you need will be provided to you in your Pod and you will remain in there until orientation is completed and an Official comes to take you to the Dining Hall for dinner."

While he spoke Kali took the holotab from him and saw a Pod number had appeared and a mini-map of the colony appeared, showing her a small dot and a path leading her to her location.

"Your ID gets your anything you need." He continued holding up his own wrist and showing her his unique pattern of raised white lines. "It gets you into your Pod, it gets your into other rooms that you are allowed into, as well as it gets you the proper dietary requirements in the Dinning Hall. Simply scan like I did earlier."

Kali nodded, quickly understanding and actually liking the efficiency and order of everything here.

"Now I know you probably still can't talk right now, so any questions you have you can ask by pressing the help button on your holotab." He showed her the menu and how to get to the help button. "Please don't use the emergency call icon unless it is an absolute emergency." He said pointing to a red icon on the menu.

He smiled up at her with a distanced look on his face. "Now report to your Pod, and enjoy your life on Mars." He said with forced excitement. Kali smiled, half-heatedly back and left the front of the line, following the directions on her holotab to her Pod.

"So your really going up there?"

Jase Phernez looked down at his younger brother adjusting his cowboy hat so he could see his piercing blue eyes.

"Uh huh" he said his southern drawl coming out as he angled his head at the sky "why wouldn't I squirt?"

"Because you wont ever come back" His younger brother said clutching the plush retro rocket ship Jase got him "because you cant ever come home" the little boy said his voice breaking.

Jase turned his eyes softening. He looked around the small bio farm he and his family owned. The white dome was tinged with grey from the years of hard weather and the whole farm had seen better days. His parents were hard working farmers cutting out a living in the Kansas biodome. He respected them for it and for raising him and his siblings while also managing a slightly large farm.

But he didnt want to be them

"Kid let me explain some thing" He said picking up the boy and putting him on his lap "you see that star right there" He said pointing "thats mars thats where i am going its a whole other planet kid a whole new place to explore no one knows whats up there"

"Sounds scary" his brother murmured twisting in his lap

"It is I suppose" Jase said "but its also exciting isnt it and now that you know which star i am you can always find me and check in on me I love you kid and im going to miss you most of all"

"now come on inside ma's going to be calling for supper any minute now"

A YEAR AND A HALF LATER

He vaguely became aware of himself as if his body parts were coming back online one by one. For a second he was deaf and blind and his mind went into over drive as his body began to twitch and struggle again the locks holding him in place. Before he could fully freak out however sound reached him the long drawn out hiss of air as he was depressurized. The bright light hit him next causing him to blink rapidly as he tried to gain some semblance of balance.

"sorry sorry the lights!"

He heard a overly hyper bubbly voice right next ot him but he ignored it instead pinching the bridge of his nose. He stumbled out of his pod and dropped to the deck pressing his forehead to the cool steel as he felt the lights dimming.

"Im sorry about that!" The bubbly voice was back causing his headache to throb "some guys dont take to hyper sleep to well"

He turned his head finally figuring out where she was in relation to him. He opened his mouth to snap at her but nothing came out so instead he just glared.

"Your voice will return in about an hour or so" The woman said acting as if she did not see the glare he sent her way "Just in time for orientation!"

He sighed and rose to his feet rolling his broad shoulders slowly as muscles he hadnt used in a year screamed in protest. She handed him a vague fruity smelling drink and he gulped it down sighing in relief as it slid down his parched throat. He requested another with his hands and thankfully she honored his request. He sipped the other one down slowly listening as she explained where he was to go and what he was to do. Now that the initial shock was wearing off he felt the excitement that propelled him on this journey. He was at Mars! He had traveled in space! His hopes and dreams were coming to fruition and by the time she finished her spiel he was bouncing on the balls of his feet and ready to go.

The minute the tech pointed out where he needed to go he was off stumbling down the hall and into the designated room. There was a mirror and a pair of clothes waiting for him neatly folded on the bench. He ignored the clothes and instead went to the mirror his blue eyes assessing himself.

The year of sleep had slimmed him down turning him from the hulkish man who lived his life on the farm to some one who looked slightly malnourish. He was still tall with broad shoulders thick arms and a kind of all american look to him but he was slimmer more malnourished looking. He frowned poking at one of his rib cages as he turned and looked himself up and down.

"If only Ma could see me now" He said softly to himself picturing her disapproving gaze. He chuckled at that and turned to his clothes fingering the green shirt and wondering what it meant. He didn't know the particulates about what his job was yet but he had a feeling it had some thing to do with his green shirt. He shrugged on his under garments and then his pants and shirt stretching it over his frame before he wandered into the next room before the doctor could come and get him. He went through the physical pushing his body and enjoying the familiar burn of physical activity. He felt normal for the first time and by the time the doctor was telling him he was done he was pumped and ready to go.

He listened to the man explain where they were asking him more question then he could answer. The physical exertion awakened his thirst for knowledge as well and he was determined to learn as much about his new home as possible. He found out not only where they were and what the schedule was but that his green shirt put him in the engineering and Biodome class and that after they were processed they would go to orientation in their pod. shortly after. The doctor wouldn't tell him any thing beyond that which only furthered Jase's curiosity.

After the doctors room he was shuffled into a long line filled with other people. He noticed most of them were confused or disoriented but he paid them no mind instead watching the next phase of the process. He finally shuffled to the front of the line mimicking the process the ones before him were doing and showing the attendent his ID. His information popped up and he glanced over it trying to see more before the attendent pushed him back.

"That information is proprietary Phernez" The guy snapped handing him his holo tab "heres you holotab keep it with you at all times its going to give you all the information you NEED"

jase smiled giving a mock salute and pretending he still couldn't speak the man scowled before continuing.

"The first message will have your Living Pod assignment and a map, showing you where you will find it. In your Pod you will meet your partner and begin orientation with her. All you need will be provided to you in your Pod and you will remain in there until orientation is completed and an Official comes to take you to the Dining Hall for dinner."

Jase nodded and took the tab glancing down and noting the minimap and the pod number. He nodded at the man and stepped forward stepping over the threshold so to speak. The man was still trying to tell him some thing but he ignored it intent on getting his new life on mars started. He followed the map ignoring every one else for now and instead making his way to his pod as fast as he could.

Kali looked up when she was 0.1 meters away from her Living Pod, according to her Holotab. She had noticed on the way over, that there had been a hearing device inserted in her ear surgically so she could lightly hear a soft voice telling her the directions. Tech like this was for the higher class back home and Kali felt special that she was going to be experiencing devices like this.

The pod door was white, pretty much undistinguished from the rest of the white and grey hallways except it had the text POD 221B on it. Not seeing a knob or a lever, Kali looked around, wondering how to open the door. And then she noticed, about waist high to the side of the door, was a glowing light that pulsed faintly. Uncertainly she pressed her wrist with her ID tattoo against it and instantly the pneumatics whooshed the door open, splitting down the middle.

"Welcome Home, Kalinda"

A automaton woman's voice lightly said in her ear. She had said Kay-linda instead of the proper Kah-linda that was the correct pronunciation. Rolling her eyes at the simple mistake, she needed to remember to change the settings once she got settled in.

Taking in the room, she noticed it was about the size of a college dorm, matching the color scheme of the whole colony base of white with grey accents and floors. To her left was a living room set up with a couch that faced a holoscreen on the opposite wall. To her right was a small table that could seat two and further on was a door that was most likely their multipurpose bathroom. She had remembered hearing about those before. Before you enter the room, you choose whether you need a shower or a toilet, and it opens up to your choice in a room about 2 meters square. It saved on space and was extremely efficient, like she assumed this whole base would be.

Walking over to the couch she noticed that it turned into a sleeping cot, and on the opposite side the holoscreen folded out and another cot came out of the wall from there. Right, two beds. She was supposed to have a partner or something. Her brain was still a little muddled as she tried to remember all that they had told her before the trip. Which wasn't much, they said they would be briefed fully upon arrival and not to worry about the specifics until they got there.

Kali sat on the couch, which was actually quite comfortable and pulled out her Holotab. She had noticed a new message icon and tapped on it. It opened up a document file that contained the entire manual for living, rules and regulations, with a notification saying that as soon as her partner showed up, orientation would begin.

The manual was extremely long, but was told not to worry, and that everything would be covered in detail soon. She began to skim over the sections as she waited, her legs crossing at the knee and her foot bouncing in the air due to the excitement building inside her.

This place was HUGE

Jase knew some thing about the construction from his own research into the program but seeing numbers on a screen and actually SEEING it were two different thigns. The place was massive all clean and white walled with corridors and hallways stretching out at almost every twist and turn. A part of Jase wanted to say fuck it and go explore but he didnt instead trying to follow the rules.

For once

He rounded another corner and stopped noticing a skylight directly above him. His curiosity getting the better of him he went directly underneath it and tried to stare up to get any hint of the world above them. The sky was tinged with red and there seemed to be a dust storm of some kind moving around the window creating a multicolored haze of dirt.

"Pretty cool huh?"

He turned noting a man who seemed to have stopped and starred at the outside world as well looking at him.

"Uh yeah some thing like that" Jase said trying his best to sound polite (some thing he wasnt good at) "I cant believe so many of these guys are just moving along instead of stopping to take it all in you know?"

"Yeah I know what you mean" The man said even if his tone suggested he wasnt to happy to be here "I guess a lot of people just want to focus on going about their buisness then realize just what they signed up for"

"Makes no sense to me" Jase said shaking his head were on another planet! The first people to colonize it and make it home you would have to be an idiot to not want that"

"I see" The man said his jaw suddenly clenched "hey you wouldnt have happened to see a girl around here would you im looking for a-"

"MOVE IT!" A tech said cutting the kid off before he could any thing more "we got a schedule to keep"

For once Jase was glad to follow an order he sent the kid a "nice" smile and turned noting he was almost at his new pod. Sure enough he reached it a few seconds later and let himself in stepping in and gaping at the room openly.

Then he saw her

He turned taking her in a little surprised he was rooming with a girl. I mean no one said it would be gender divided but he was kind of expecting it to be. Old school thought that if humanity wasnt properly controlled of its... urges they would mate and over run the planet like bunnies. Yet here was a pretty female around his age and reading her manual.

"Well at least that makes living together easier" Jase said to himself remembering all the fights and locker room attacks back home. He got along better with girls any ways less machoism and less of him having to deal with some egotistical bull shit.

"Uh hi" Jase said coming in and "my name is Jase apparently you and i are going to be bunk mates" He said coming over and extending his hand "its a pleasure to meet you Ma'am" he said a bit of his southern accent coming out

Kali looked up when she heard the door whoosh open, startled a little. In walked a tall, slim guy in a green shirt that was roughly her age. A guy? Definitely not what she was expecting, but then again, what could she honestly expect in a colony on Mars? She liked living with guys though. She had found that girl roommates only caused drama. Standing, she went to return his handshake smiling, already liking his genuine charm.

"I'm Kali." She said, "Nice to meet you too, Jase." She noted his accent. She was excited to get to know more about him and the other 500 colonists. She loved people and their unique stories, and wondered what it was that brought them together in this place.

She was about to say something else, but suddenly a sound chirped on the holoscreen, signaling that orientation was about to start. She smiled over at Jase nervously as she returned to her position on the couch, looking back down at her Holotab. A message was displayed saying, Please wait for further instructions from Captain McGill.

Curious, Kali looked back at the screen as a middle aged man appeared on the screen. He seemed very militaristic, so she could only assume he was the Captain.

Hello, and welcome to Mars Colony Alpha. I am your captain, Captain Jon C. McGill. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you during our scheduled meeting time. Before we can begin life here in our new home, we need to take some time to go over the manual, in order to provide a safe and hospitable living environment for our species to thrive in.

Madame Julet will lead you through this process as she oversees living operations in this colony. Please open the Holotab document that you should have received by now and follow along with Madame Julet.

Captain McGill faded from the screen and a lady who was nice looking, but hard around the edges, appeared on the screen with a sweet smile.

Hello, fellow Martians! I am Madame Julet and I am in charge of all living operations here in our colony! The rules and regulations in this manual are simple and vital that everything runs smoothly. Disobedience is dangerous and will not be tolerated. Any violations of the rules will be dealt with according to the punishment section which we will get to later.

Now, let's begin on page one...

Madame Julet continued on for quite a bit. It was a pretty lengthy manual, but it was all reasonable rules and regulations that most societies already followed. Kali didn't see anything she would have an issue with. Basic life would consist of working a job for 5 days on 2 days off. Job placement was predetermined before arrival based on the aptitude test and skills possessed by each colonist. The colors were listed in the manual.

Perfect! Kali excelled at cooking. She had been a small town restaurant chef to help pay for her college bills, and loved anything to do with food. She raised an eyebrow at the color green and looked over at Jase, trying to assess him a bit more.

Madame Junet continued on, talking about excursions and other day-to-day activities. Everything seemed fun, exciting and ideal to Kali.

And then she got to the Breeding Section. Kali raised an eyebrow, curious. She knew that that was going to be a thing, because obviously they were here to start humanity's growth on other planets, but she hadn't honestly thought much about how they were going to grow necessarily.

They will be your partner in virtually every aspect, so consider yourselves inseparable. These choices were made with careful planning and consideration, so there should be no issues. If there are, please press your help button on your Holotab and we will get everything sorted out. However, you are STILL required to breed with them.

Kali sat there, feeling her face flush. She was expected to do what with this guy? Sexual Intimacy had always been a strange concept thing to her and she had only really been with one person. And now she was supposed to have sex with and conceive a baby with a guy she had just met? Gulping she re-read the section.

Ok, there was an assigned time for them to copulate. And from what she was gathering, there were only going to be handful of pregnancies each year, so it could be years before they had to do anything. Right?

Jase was about ot say more introduce himself to her more fully. She seemed interesting and sweet enough he thought to himself trying not to eye her to much. He wasnt trying to stare (his mom had raised him to be a gentleman afte all) but he couldnt help but be a little interested .After all they were going to be sharing a room together if she seemed nice enough than maybe....

sound came out of his holotab as soon as he opened his mouth to say more to her. He saw her glance at her own tab so he followed so noting the message on it. His heart raced as he realized this was it, it was time for them to learn what they were going to be doing here.

It was time to start colonizing another planet

Jase wasnt a patriot by any means but his back straightened when the captain came on. He was all military and business the leader of their new little colony for the most part.

His new president

He listened to him making a point of ignoring the feeling of rebellion inside of him. He wasnt going to let his anger and his fathers bad habits screw this up for himself it was a new life and a new chance for himself. He was smart smart enough to be one of the chosen few.

And he wouldnt screw that up

He didnt stay on long basically saying hey make sure you read this before handing it over to the woman who seemed to be the "face" of their little colony. She had a nice face but there was a hard edge to it that made him pause. she quickly assumed control moving forward and going through the manual in a well practiced speed. He would have to read the almost scary large manual later but he followed along as best he could.

Then they reached the end

When the tab said breeding section Jase frowned narrowing his eyes and looking in more closely. He waited trying not to control his nervousness as she laid down the "rules".

She finished dropping her bombs and the transmission cut leaving them in stunned silence. Jase looked over looking at her his mouth slightly hung open. They were paired together? Without a second thought? Jase knew that breeding would be a big thing but he never expected....

"thats uh shocking" he finally said as the silence hung "I mean I cant believe they expect us to..." he paused trying to get the words for it.

"I mean uh" Jase said words failing him before he finally laughed "this was a fucking bomb drop wasnt it" he said snorting as laughter over took him.

Kali for some reason shot an embarrassed look at Jase as he stumbled over words. He obviously felt the same ways she did about this, so she should've felt comforted at that thought. She smiled shyly, mirroring his reaction.

"Yeah, well. Heh, it's a bit strange, but if you think about it, it's totally logical." She said, finally thinking it through now that she was voicing her opinion out loud. "They want to make sure that the best offspring are produced in order to survive." Kali bit her lip as she skimmed through the section once more before gathering the courage to put it down and finally look at him. Really look at him.

"I guess we should get to know each other then." She said with a small laugh. He was pretty cute. She had a horrible time judging what people thought of her, and normally she wouldn't care, but in this case, not only were they Pod-mates, but they were going to have to get intimate sooner or later, so she didn't want to be annoying or weird right of the bat.

She looked at her Holotab as it chimed again, popping up a schedule. The schedule showed that they were to report for work in an hour and that they would get further instructions there. Looks like on their first day they would get straight to 'being an integral part of the colony' as Madame Junet had said a few times during the orientation. After work, they would eat dinner and then sleep for 8 hours so they can start the next day of work. The schedule went on from there in a similar pattern for 5 days total, just like they were told. This wouldn't be so bad, she thought.

"Shoot. So my job is in the kitchens, and it looks like we have to start working right away. Is your schedule similar?" She asked him, assuming it was. It seemed like partners would have similar schedules and eating times, ensuring ample time to get to know each other outside of work.

His awkward mumbling seemed to have broken the tension so to speak as she smiled at him and began to talk. He found her voice to be very soothing and so he sat down nodding as she brought up a good point. He supposed it did make sense in a round about way as this was supposed to be the biggest endeavor NSA and the coalition had ever undertaken and since this was supposed to be at its core a utopia breeding would be some thing taken with the utmost severity.

Still it was a little weird

He looked down mirroring her actions as the holotab lit up and displayed his work station. He was going to be going to the topmost levels as part of the crew working on the farming or biodome habitats. His heart leapt at the thought of being so close and working on so big a project.

“I would like to get to know you” he sid glancing up after having read his assignment “I mean given what we are going to be doing together that’s a given” he said laughing softly “and I imagine that we will be spending a lot of time together even if we work in two different places” He said showing her his tablet.

“It would seem our schedules mirror each other” he pointed out before getting up “which means we are going to be seeing a lot of each other and im looking forward to it” he said taking her hand and giving it a kiss.

Kali smiled at his genuine charm. He was sweet, and it seemed like they were going to get along fine. Standing up, she realized how tall he was comparatively. Standing only at 5'4" Kali had to tilt her head back a bit to look up at him.

A beeping sounded in her ear and she looked at her Holotab. Directions to her work place, the kitchens, showed on a map.

"Well, time to go to work!" She said to Jase cheerfully. They exited the pod and walked in the direction the line was pointing. They seemed to head along the same route for a distance, and they had a few brief conversations about the colony and their excitement about work before they had to go separate ways.

Work in the kitchen was actually fun. The head chef was Ralmonzo Buitoni. He informed everyone of their daily duties and what to expect working in the kitchen. It was very similar to the restaurant back home, except of course, they were on Mars. They had fresh vegetables and fruits grown from the Biodome and fresh shipments of meat and dairy from the farm.

After a day of working, they were released from the kitchens and her Holotab scheduled her to return back to her pod. Excited, to go back, rest, and tell Jase all about the day, she happily followed the directions back, starting to get a feel for her surroundings.

She arrived at the pod almost exactly the same time Jase did. Smiling, she greeted him with a warm smile and scanned her wrist to open the door. What she saw inside surprised her, greatly. The couch and holoscreen had been folded into the wall and in its place against the far wall was a larger bed, big enough for two people.
