Marliegh the Vampire Slayer

Newark International Airport, Newark, New Jersey
Dion stepped off the plane and onto American soil for the first time in his life. Rupert said he was to take the train into New York and make his way to 28 West 25th Street. He was set up with a job at Antique Collections, Inc it was his cover for being in the city, he was to be an adviser to the owner, and purchasers as well as an identifier. He was also supposed to keep his eyes open for one of the recently awakened Slayers. There had been reports of a girl fighting vampires in the area, and the more new Watchers and Slayers reporting to the new council the better. The more organized. The stronger.

Dion pulled his ear phones out and strolled down to the baggage claim.. an hour later he found himself, and his extensive amounts of luggage on yet another train moving in the direction of his newest destination. He hoped that his new bosses, who were to be providing him with a place to stay, hadn't lumped him into an apartment with someone else. Sharing a place would impinge on his abilities to locate and train the Slayer. One of the first things he would have to do is see if the reports were accurate. This had been his third stop on the trail of a Slayer, the first was Rome. The second, Tokyo. Now.. America. He'd always wanted to see America.. the land of freedom. The land of opportunity. The land of rebels.

Dion Tremaine stood before his final destination... "The Comfort Inn?" Dion said to himself with a bit of a frown. It didn't exactly look like the kind of place to have a swanky bachelor pad.. but it was better than not having any where to stay.

Dion checked in and followed the directions to his room. He moved swiftly and slid the card into the lock and opened the door. Once inside Dion kicked the air conditioner on and pulled out his mobile phone. Not to long after, once through the security channels he heard the familiar voice on the other end, "Safe trip, Dion?"

Dion sat down on the bed, and nodded knowing Rupert couldn't see him. "Yes, Mr. Giles. The Tube here is a little more disorganized then back home, but the trip was nice. I have met my bosses and they have given me a room at the Comfort Inn. It's right next to and across the way from work." Dion said, reporting his findings thus far. "They are not your bosses Dion. Remember that. I value your loyalty and sense of duty, but remember your first duty is to the Slayer."

"Of course, sir. Sorry, sir." Dion said, scolding himself momentarily. "No need to apologize. Just remember. Oh, and make sure you place the beacon in your room. It will be much easier for you to find your way back to your room by using mystical means than those bloody corner street maps. God speed." Then nothing. Silence. Dion hung up the phone and stood. He pulled his blazer off and tossed it on the bed. He pulled the beacon from his luggage and set it on top of the Tele and then set out upon the streets of New York City, to search for the Slayer.

Marliegh had moved to New York almost 5 years ago to go to school. Her parents had died in a tragic car accident and left her with a large trust fund that an attorney was taking care of which would secure her as long as she lived modestly. Her main focus had been to get away from the small town life, which is why school was taking so long to finish. She didn't care.

She hadn't been traumatically impacted with the death of her parents because they'd adopted her when she was 13. Marliegh obviously didn't belong to the Madisons. They were freakishly identical: both with blonde hair and blue eyes, whereas Marliegh had dark brown hair and green eyes. The 5 years before they had died and she had turned 18 had been hell on earth.

Her life in New York suited her, and she loved it. She worked at a local coffee shop for a reason unbeknownst to even her, went to school, and partied. She cared naught about anything else. Until recently things had been going almost perfect for her.

Recently, she'd been seeing things, sensing things. It was a sixth sense regarding certain people that Marliegh couldn't control or understand. It followed with an instinctive impulse to attack offensively. She hadn't seriously injured anyone as of yet, but it was an uncomfortable feeling.

Her professor had tried to talk to her about it. Marliegh, I know some changes have been going on in your life. I want to help you understand.

She laughed in his face. She didn't care about the changes, she simply thought they would eventually go away. That day he again had asked for her to listen to him, but she had angrily refused. I don't give a damn, Professor, I'll take care of it myself.

But Marliegh didn't know how to take care of it. That night she decided to go out, but her friends were all too busy. Not wanting to stay home for the night, Marliegh dressed and headed out by herself at dusk. Sunset was her favorite time of day, but she didn't know why. She loved walking as the sun was setting and the moon was rising. A new club had opened up just a little ways from her appartment in an area that she had yet to attack anyone at random, and Marliegh felt her pulse jump the moment she heard the loud thumping of the bass. She couldn't wait until she could get lost in those erratic, indistinguishable sounds.

Dion, the Wanderer

Dion wandered the streets. He watched the sun set behind skyscrapers and buildings, something he'd seen in Tokyo and also in London. But his quiet little home town.. had been lacking such large buildings and such traffic! He strolled the streets rather quietly, and unobtrusively. He had his hands in his pockets, his head down or at least that was how it seemed. His right hand was wrapped around a crystal that was supposed to vibrate when the Slayer was around, his left hand was wrapped around a small pistol. Something that had been waiting for him at the desk when he left the building. It wouldn't kill a vampire, should he be that unfortunate but it would sure as hell slow them down.

The crystal had been a gift from Willow to all the new Watchers, it would make there job a lot easier. The problem was, that in a city this size.. finding one person was going to be hard as hell. Dion's sense were as heightened as ever. His eyes flowed over every face.. every moving body.. every single thing he could rest his eyes on. Dion was able to slip and out of crowds rather easily. He had a pair of black slacks on, nice black shoes, and a teal button down shirt. A pair of prescription sunglasses rested gently on his nose. They were new, brand new. They would begin to lighten until they were normal glasses as the sun set.

He sighed and turned down an alley way, stepping away from the throngs of people he ducked behind a dumpster. He pulled the crystal out of his pocket and held his hand flat and open. He closed his eyes and chanted the prayer Willow had sent with the gift. "Artemis, Virgin Goddess of the Hunt, aide me in my search. The chosen woman that needs to be found will be a warrior for light and the powers of good. Hear my call." Slowly he opened his eyes and stared at the crystal. He'd seen this a twice before. The crystal stayed flat in his hand unmoving, once again it seemed like... it was then that the crystal levitated from the palm of his hand, gleaming with silvery light. The perfectly carved end of the crystal rotated in his hand and pointed off towards the north east. Before lowering to his palm again.

Dion, dumbstruck, put the crystal back in his pocket and began walking the best he could Northeast. The sun had finally set, and the silvery moon shone full above the city... A blessing of Artemis if indeed Dion had ever seen one.

When Marliegh got to the club it was already bursting with people dancing and jumping around. She was surprised that she was even let in, but she had a feeling her low cut green halter and tight jeans had pleased the bouncer well enough to let her by.

It was hot, sweaty, and spare words were passed to anyone. Everyone was lost with the beat of the music, caring little to what was revealed. Marliegh soon found herself in the throng of people, her own body bumping and grinding with those around her. Her skin moistened from the heat and the stifling air. Her long brown hair matted to her face as she twisted her body in movements and positions she never thought possible.

Occasionally she would make her way to the bar. Every time there was a guy willing to buy her a drink, but Marliegh always refused. She would be going home alone tonight. All night she'd been ordering water, trying to keep hydrated. She loved the absence of her fear that she would attack someone at random. Between the loud incessant music and dancing, Marliegh lost track of her thoughts and of time. If there had been a foreboding feeling in her mind that night, she didn't care to listen.

The Journey

Dion wandered the streets, stopping occasionally to consult his crystal for guidance. He sighed softly and finally stopped on a bench. He sat and pulled a cigarette out of his pack and lighting it. He tilted his head back and just stared up into the night, the blessed, pure silver cross spilled out of his shirt.

Once he finished smoking he stood up and found himself thirsty. He stepped into a convenience store and purchased a bottle of water. He came out and continued on the trail, his feet had began to ache. His legs were getting tired, it seemed the rest and the water did noting to aide him. It seemed they would only slow him down.

He could feel the sweat beading down his back, just as a cooling breeze swept past. He froze in place. It was the middle of the American summer, in the midst of a heat wave with no sign of relief according to the national weather service. This breeze was different. Unnatural. He took off running. Running like he stole something... he would find the Slayer. He had too. A storm was coming.. and she needed to be warned and prepared.

As midnight passed Marliegh decided to head home. She had begun to tire from the dancing and the loud music had finally gotten to her. She hadn't regretted coming alone, she'd actually enjoyed it immensely. Time alone without anyone to bother her, and to loose all inhibitions and forget everything that was going on in her life.

She didn't think about her adoptive parents, the attorney, college, her friends, work, or her weird outbursts. She loved the ability to think of nothing and enjoy simple pleasures.

It was dark and eerily cold as she began to wander in the direction of her appartment. She looked up at the full moon and smiled. She found it so beautiful. Her walk was leisurely and slow, her body tingled with what she thought had been her muslces aching from the dancing. She yawned loudly and then giggled for no apparent reason. Marliegh found herself an extremely playful, carefree mood, and she loved the quiet stillness the night allowed.

Vampire

As she was enjoying her night, giggling and smiling a figure stepped out from an alley near her. It's steps were light. Soundless. Haunting. He stalked her, following silently and closing the distance between them when ever he could. As they rounded a corner, the creature took in the scene. Almost no lights.. a dark alley way. No people.. nothing but the dead of night and the full moon light. A feral grin spread across his face as his true nature revealed itself.

As they were walking passed the mouth of a dark alley way, she received a jolt. A warning if she knew how to take it. The creature lunged for her, trying to grab her by the shoulder blades. A low feral growl escaping him, and reaching her ears. A pair of gleaming yellowish eyes stared at the slender slip of neck vailed by raven black hair...

Had she been paying attention she would've felt the awkward sense of foreboding. But Marliegh was too busy skipping playfully down the street. The jolt of fear and shocked her and sent shivers down her spine. She didn't understand what it was, but her first instinct was the cold air.

As she felt the sharp pain in her shoulder blades. As she spun around she almost screamed, but her body reacted with such speed and force that she didn't have time to scream. Her limbs were a blur of colors as they fought. His low growls were indistinguishable as he grunted to dodge her movements.

From the back of her mind Marliegh found instincts and knowledge that was so foreign to her but yet so natural. She found enjoyment in the way she moved and a smile grew across her face. But within a few moments her arrogance grew to great and he knocked her to the ground.

Speed

The speed she started moving at had greatly confused the vampire. Allowing her time to block his blows and land a few of her own. Eventually his bloodlust overcame the shock and confusion. Within a few moments she was on the ground and he was ontop of her.

The creature was trying his best to pin her legs under his body weight and hold down her hands and arms with his own. He snarled in her face as they struggled along the ground. This vampire was young perhaps not even a year old. He had no idea who or what he was fighting.. or why she was so strong.

Meanwhile...

Dion rounded the corner at the far end of the block, just in time to watch the girl hit the ground. He quickened his pace and moved down the street, the pistol was out and in his hand. He crept to a near by alley and stood there watching. The crystal in his pocket was humming like mad, his duty kept him from intervening. He was a watcher, a guide and trainer for the Slayer. He was not to interfere. He was just supposed to watch.

The safety on the gun clicked off. Dion knew what had to happen here. Either the Slayer won the fight, or she died.

When Marliegh hit the ground she thought she was dead, that surely whoever this was had won, and that her world would at any second go black. But her body kept fighting, her body kicked and she swung her arms with an awkward precision. In frustration Marliegh launched her body upward and rolled ontop of her attacker.

Again they fought and he tried to shove her off of him, but she wouldn't move. Her knees pinned his shoulders and chest down and he could move neither left nor right. But he still continued to fight her.

Stop! She yelled. I'm not going to hurt you, stop.

Marliegh didn't understand. He was so strange and so scared. She didn't want to hurt him, but she hadn't had a choice thus far because her body had reacted without any inclination from her. She heard a noise from behind her and she turned, giving the man below her enough time to throw her off and run away. Marliegh fell onto the ground with a groan and a grunt.

Damnit.....She cursed.

Dion

Dion shoved the gun back into his pocket and quickly moved to the girls side. "Are you broken?" Dion asked in a thick British accent. He crouched beside her and offered her a hand up. A friendly smile played upon his face, "Your form certainly left something to be desired, but the others will be more than happy that I've found you."

Dion helped her to her feet and bowed slightly, "Perhaps now that your on your feet and unwounded we should persue that Vampire you've let escape?" Dion looked in the direction the creature sped off toward. Dion's dark green eyes stared at the girl curiously. She was much smaller than he'd imagined.

Marliegh looked at him in surprise and shock. Who are you? She asked him. And where the hell did you come from?

She looked around. She hadn't heard or seen him follow her, but then again she hadn't heard her attacker either. Marliegh didn't know what had come over her.

She took his hand and managed to her feet and tried to understand what he was saying. He'd said something about her form, a Vampire, and persuing something. It was all too confusing for Marliegh, she just wanted to get out of there and off of the street.

I don't know who the hell that was, and I don't know who the hell you are, and I don't care. I am going home. Her head hurt and she was a little dizzy. All the fighting had left her with a woozy, drunk feeling. She rubbed her eyes as she tried to focus and walk in the direction of her appartment. She just wanted to crash. She felt exhausted, and hungry.

Have a nice night, she said to him sarcastically as she began to walk away.

Dion, the Watcher.

"Wait. Hold on a second." He walked around till he was in front of her. "You seriously don't know?" He frowned slightly and held out his hand to her, "My name is Dion Tremaine. I'm a Watcher, and you, you are the Slayer. My charge as it were. Please, there is a lot to explain and the sooner the better. Your life could be in danger."

Dion looked at her, a harried, haunted, pleading look in his eyes. It was obvious that whether or not she believed what he was saying that he believed it with every ounce of his being. With every bit of who he was.

He took her hands in his and stood firmly in front of her. He stared into her eyes. "I know you don't know me. I know you don't believe me. But for the sake of this city, and your own life. Please, PLEASE! Trust me."
