For all aspiring authors', Clemens is a most interesting study. His life as much as his writing. Many of his books were turned out to 'pay the bills' not necessarily because he was inspired to write them.

At one point he moved the family to Europe and rented out his home in Hartford in order to save money and avoid bankruptcy.

Worthless bit of trivia for all you interior decorating aficianados. The house in Hartford was decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany's and Candace Wheeler's Associated Artists company. When the Clemens sold and moved to Redding, the new owners, Bissell, took out and threw away all the Tiffany glass and painted over all of Wheeler's wallcoverings. It was no longer the style!
