A quick FYI ...

I was looking through some LiveJournal posts and found out that MardiGras Publishing has recently closed down.

What precisely did they publish? It this one of the commonly used self-publishers?

They were a fairly large e-publisher.

From what I've been reading elsewhere there's more than a few questions about why it went under. A lot of author's have gotten hurt by them even before the company went under.

Q_C, MGP was an Erotic Romance Publisher. I know several people who were published with them at one time or still (contractually) are.

This comes on the heels of Triskelion Publishing going out of business. Several authors have work whose rights are locked up in bankruptcy.

The were an e-publisher that seemed to have a wide range of lines including young adult, romance, erotica, and horror. How big ... I'm not sure.

From what I've read, anyone that had contracts with them - their stories revert back to them. But anyone who may have submitted anything to them should be aware that they won't be hearing anything back from them.

And I'd be one of those people who submitted. Thank you for the heads up.

Weird things happen in bankruptcy court. The publisher has made a public statement that she has released ALL authors from their contracts, but the court can overrule that if it finds those contracts are an asset that can be used to pay creditors (some of whom will be those authors owed royalties.)

Ouch ... At least with Haworth Press, they are being aquired by another company (Taylor and Francis) - which is gumming up the works on some things, but at least authors will end up with a potential "home" and retain their stories.

I feel so sorry for the poor authors tied up in all this :(

Five stories... :( *sigh*

Only one (The Ride) was officially "published" though... the others were just accepted... I'm still trying to ascertain if those stories count as "assets" or not, when it comes to bankruptcy court...
