Manilanne was the next in line, one of her older sisters was currently leader of their tribe. She was out scouting alone. She liked it that way, some of her sisters went out in groups or pairs, but so far she liked to go alone. The queen understood as she had been a solitary hunter in her day.
When she returned all she found was charred remains. She did funeral rites for her entire tribe, and smeared herself with ashes and realized that now she was the last of her tribe.
She had not been concerned about it before, Jaylene the queen, had been pregnant and all the auguries said it would be a girl child and Manilanne had assumed the child would be trained to rule.
Now Manilanne was alone, after a week of mourning she went to the river and cleansed her body. Her tanned body sleek with muscles, her red curls cut short to her head. What was she to do now? Hers had been one of the last tribes left in the forrest. She dressed in her hunting leathers and sought out help.
She found the seer, a fragile old woman who looked more than half dead and lived in a tiny cave. Manilanne breathed in the fresh air as she left the cave and pondered what the seer had said.
"Find the man who reads, lay with him, and your tribe will continue." She had no idea what it meant, but she knew that men lived in cities. So she headed for the biggest city she knew and checked out the situation. She would stand out in the city, then again their were people going in and out all the time.
She headed in with a group of traders and found herself lost in the masses of unwashed bodies, trade goods, and such.
