Man writing from a woman's perspective

I am writing a story at the moment from the perspective of a women, just wondered what your thoughts are on a guy doing this?

Any writer needs to be able to write from the perspective of both genders. So, it's a pretty normal thing to do. Some people find it more challenging than others, but that's true about any aspect of writing.

In the area of erotic writing in particular, most pieces are aimed at an audience of one gender, and the characters are idealized to please that audience. In erotica written for a male audience you tend to see more aggressive women, often some type of action heroine or athlete who thinks in a somewhat masculine way. Or you may see women who are the complete opposite direction, totally into being a sex-kitten. In erotica written for a female audience you see men idealized in a parallel way - sensitive, passionate, eloquent, who think in a somewhat feminine way. Some authors believe in the ruthless pursuit of realism, but I think that especially in erotica and romance, it can accomplish more to create characters who fulfill the audience's wishes.

When you get comments or PM's from your story saying 'come on, you're really a woman, aren't you?' then you know you've done a good job.

If you're a good writer, then it makes no difference.

Anne Rice is one of the best writers of the past 50 years, easily. She's a woman who wrote a collection of vampire novels from a man's point of view, and it's brilliant. If she can do that, then the other way around is no problem.

I've seen some Lit stories from male author's written from a female pov- and they can be terrific. But the biggest mistake that some male author's make is that the make it too vulgur and with little emotion.

Here's the best example:

That author told me that he's recieved messages from people asking if the story was true (even though his profile says male). That's how you know the writing is good.
