The California Board of Education has banned schools in the state from serving sloppy joe sandwiches. According to Margaret Weaver, assistant to the Education Secretary, the move was a preemptive measure designed to prevent any groups from feeling marginalized. In a press release, Ms. Weaver states:
"This decision was not the result of protests, but a proactive measure to foster inclusion. Lunch is a communal experience in which the students come together as equals, and misogyny has no place in that. No matter the incarnation (sloppy joe, Manwich), this sandwich is inherently sexist. As far as the school board is concerned, such patriarchy has no place on the cafeteria tray."
The ruling does not prohibit children from packing the sandwich in their lunches from home.
