Man fully conscious in coma for 12 years but unable to show any signs of it

A man was trapped inside of a coma after a severe case of meningitis for 12 years while fully awake and conscious the whole time but unable to show any signs of it because he was in a 100% paralyzed state.

Doctors believed that he was still in a coma.

This is absolutely mortifying and sounds even worse than anesthetia awareness. How could something like this happen?

I wonder if this story has sent reverberations throughout the medical community.

There is something about people that young being in a coma and their brain rewiring. It didn't say that's why he regained his cognitive abilities but I'm sure that's a factor. It happens more in younger people than older, by far.

You're right it would be horrible to be in that position. I don't understand either, you would think even though his body didn't appear to get better they would have done tests to check for specific brain activity ever so often. Here are the current tests, I don't know what was available during the time of his coma.
