Okay, this is seriously wrong, IMNSHO.

Basis of the story - woman from Kenya in the States for college. School ended, she marries a US citizen. Three weeks later, they see two children drowning in the ocean - he runs in, saves them, but is pulled under and drowns. Now she's being told she's not eligible for permanent residency and faces deportation.

The story also includes a link to a petition to protest/prevent her being deported.

Online petitions don't do diddly squat, unfortunately: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/petition/internet.asp

I wish that article had given a bit more information, because they make it sound like she married him to stay here rather than for love. Wasn't there a terrible Gerard Depardieu movie about that? I have a friend who went through hell proving that her foreign-born husband was really her LOVED ONE and not just a marriage of convenience, so I know it's a tough process, and if these two succeeded then they deserve to have that recognized, not left open to question.

This is just terrible. Thanks for the links to the petition

Well, online petitions might not do diddly as snopes says, but this one at least provided some additional information:

Jacqueline Coats, a native from Kenya, legally entered the United States in 2001 under a student visa. She met Marlin Coats in 2004. The couple dated for two years and then married on April 17, 2006. Mr. Coats filled-out the necessary paperwork to petition Jacqueline’s permanent residency on May 10, 2006. Four days later, Mr. Coats heroically died. Unfortunately for Jacqueline, the paperwork for permanent residency was not filed prior to Marlin’s death and now she faces deportation.

I don't doubt that they were actually dating, I just wish the news article had made it more clear!

Boy, you are naive... expecting today's "journalists" to include all the pertinent information? Sheesh. What do you think this is, the 1950s? :p
