Rebecca sighed softly as she tucked her angle close and led her through the all too familiar clinical corridors. Yet again Rebecca was taking Melody to her routine chemo appointment.

Her precious 4 year old had been battling cancer for most of her life and in the early days the young mom wasn't doing it alone however all that changed when Melodys father was killed for his country.

Bex as she prefered to be known led her daughter on to the childrens ward a small smile on her face as she reached the nurses station.

She smiled at Molly Melodys favourite nurse as she led them to the all too familar room and started getting her prepared for treatment.

She hated that she couldnt take her princesses pain away she hated that she was going through this alone as to top it off her parents had disowned her when decided to keep her daughter.

Jeremy Carter MD was tired as he walked into work this morning. He had been working long hours and hadn't been getting much sleep. He was the newest member of the pediatric staff and he had been filling in for a lot of the more senior physicians.

Once he got to the pediatric wing, however, Dr. Carter's attitude changed. He put a smile on his face and greeted everyone cheerfully. How could he be down? These kids were going through a lot. Many were seriously ill, and they were relying on him to help them get better.

The nurse told him that there was a pediatric patient receiving chemo treatment. Dr. Carter decided that he would head over and see that patient. It wasn't a normal part of his day, but he decided it was something he needed to do.

He walked in and greeted the young girl and her mother. He made idle conversation with them in an attempt to take their minds off of the reason they were there. He was actually surprised at how young the mother looked.

Rebeccca smiled as the Doctor came into the room and started talking with Melody and ultimately making her smile. As the Doctor was about to leave Rebecca stopped him. "Dr. Carter. thank you. It's rare that I get to see her smile these days." She said softly, with a small thankful smile.

He was certainly older than she was but he seemed to look a lot older than he was and no doubt that was because he was tired. She had never looked at a man since her ex had passed on, her focus not only having been on Melody and her care but no one had ever caught her attention.

"Do you see her getting better in time for Christmas?" She asked softly, she wanted her princess to be able to at least enjoy on holiday without being sick or too tired to enjoy the day.

Dr. Carter looked at the mother. "I wish that I could say to you that she will be better by Christmas, or she will improve before Christmas, but I can't in good conscience say that. I am not saying she won't be, but it isn't something that I can say will definitely happen."

Carter turned to the little girl. "You are doing great. I am sure you are excited about Christmas. What do you want Santa to bring you this year?" He smiled at her. He wasn't sure if she still believed in Santa, but he played the game.

He listened to her response and then turned back to the young mother. "When are you going to be back. I would like to check in on you and your daughter to see how things are going, and maybe I can give you the response that you are looking for."

Rebecca nodded and swallowed down her emotions. "At least you've been honest about it." She said quietly.

She felt a small genuine smile creep on to her lips as she listened to them both talking about Christmas. Melody loved Santa and Christmas seemed to be the only thing keeping her princess going through their dark time.

"Next week though she won't be discharged until tomorrow morning."

"well, I will stop up and see her before she is discharged tomorrow, and I will check in on her next week to see how things are progressing," he said to the mother.

"You my dear, need to just relax and think about Santa getting ready for his trip to bring you some nice presents," he smiled at the girl. "I will be back to see you in a few hours."

Dr. Carter placed a hand on the mother's back and asked her to go into the hallway with him. "Keep her smiling and happy. Being in good spirits will help her through this. I know it is a tough time for both of you, but smiles go a long, long way. That goes for you too." He smiled at her in an effort to elicit a smile from her.

She folded her arms protectively around herself as she listened to the doctor. "I appreciate it and I'll do my best. It's not the easiest thing to do with everything going on. It's a struggle." She admitted softly she wasn't sure why she was opening up to him as she didn't know him but he was really the first person to make an effort with either her or Melody.

"I realize it isn't easy, especially at this time of year, but you have to do your best. Keep your daughter in good spirits. It will help her... and you."

He touched her arm as he was leaving. "I will be back later to see how the two of you are doing."
