A fucking Major did the killings? Jesus Christ, what's the world coming to?

Wow.... Haven't read any of the news today, so this is the first I've heard.

Wow....

Doesn't the military give the occasional psych eval?

The really, truly scary part is that he WAS a psychiatrist serving there. There will be much, much more to the story once the Army releases more. Even so, everyone reaches their breaking point at some point, even the psyc professionals. I have a whole lot of other opinions on this that I'll keep to myself for now.

At the moment, I'm still checking up on friends living there, and processing the whole event. It's exceptionally close to what my last job focused on.

Think about how the deployed Hood guys and girls must feel.

I saw this earlier. That's horrible. :(

Thoughts and prayers with families/friends of all involved.

This is SO sad, I've been tracking it. I think it's just going to get sadder and more inexplicable as info trickles in.

Malik Nidal Hasan

Think about how the families of the troops that had just returned from down range feel after their loved ones literally were shot in the back by a chickenshit bastard.
If this sorry fuck were truly upset about a rumored deployment he had three choices: resign his commission in protest and serve as an enlisted soldier refusing to lead troops in something he didn't believe, resign his commission & refuse to deploy taking his chances in court to stay out of Leavenworth, or suck the end of one his own gun barrels. What the fuck this jackass hoped to accomplish by killing those that complied with the oath they took boggles the mind. That he had fooled superior(s) enough to be on the promotion list to LTC implodes it. The line of duty investigation better be a slam dunk.

May the selfish rat bastard burn slowly on a spit in hell while Leonidas and Achilles trade him back and forth as a butt buddy for the rest of eternity.

Evidently the shooter's still alive.

AP News said:
Authorities said immediately after the shootings that they had killed the suspected shooter, but later in the evening they recanted and said that he was alive and in stable condition at a hospital, watched by a guard.

"His death is not imminent,"
said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He offered little explanation for the mistake, other than to say there was confusion at the hospital.

Just out of curiosity, does the Army still use a firing squad? One would imagine that this would count as some kind of act of treason.

What a tragedy. Whenever something like this happens I wonder why the hell he couldn't have just gone ahead and shot himself first, and saved the rest of us the trouble.

Before it's all over, I bet the fucker will WISH he'd been killed in the fray.

My sis in law finally called back. All her friends still stationed there are okay. We're hoping that my brother (also in Iraq) doesn't hear about this until tomorrow when he talks to D, so she can assure him that everyone is fine.

graceanne - that is so good to hear.

I struggle when I hear these stories - I have that wierd feeling of instant fear, and then when I hear that everyone I know is OK, a horrible feeling of guilt that yes, while my loved ones are fine, *someone else's are not* and it's gut wrenching.

My husband was quiet tonight, the few times he spoke, he said "what the fuck," and just shook his head.

That's really good they're all fine. All of my friends are okay, too, which I'm relieved to hear. It took a little while to track them all down, but as long as they're okay, it's all good.

That kind of news would definitely be better coming from her, though with how news and all travels down there it may not happen that way.

I was really hoping to be able to say "don't judge him by his name" but it seems he IS a fundamentalist Islamic type. Apparently he lied about his nationality (wrote Palestinian but was born in Arlington VA) and had repeatedly decried what the US was doing over there. Which is fine for most citizens, the beautiful thing about America is we can say and do what we please, but once you're in the military, that gets curtailed. And he didn't curtail.

Like his Virginia Tech co-alum, Cho Seung-Hui, it seems there were a lot of warning signs that went unheeded.

Nuts exploding violently come in every flavor, I think this is more a case of "nut who happens to be getting into religion" with his nuttiness, (just like some people might get into SAW or tin foil hats and then shoot people) rather than some covert radicalized Islamist infiltrator into the Army.

That's what I think. *shrugs*

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. I have read a few conflicting reports, and there is clearly a lot of misinformation out there. He may have been very religious, but obviously you can be a religious Muslim and not be violent. His Imam has been quoted as saying he showed up for prayer in army clothes often.

It sounds like he was critical of the war, but everything I've read suggests that was a result of treating returning vets and nothing to do with Islam. I don't know. We'll see as more facts come out.

Soldiers reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" — before opening fire, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander.

That's all I need to know.

What Netz said.

He went to a mosque in Silver Spring, for crying out loud. He's not in some secret terrorist group. He's just insane, and happens to be religious. If a crazy non-muslim had done this and yelled out "praise Jesus," no one would have picked up on it.

OH my ass. The media would be all over someone saying Praise Jesus.
