Major and minor categories

Hi,

I only (as yet) have three stories published on Literotica; several others in the pipeline.

They all have Incest/Taboo elements, with the main protagonist being a woman who is having a sexual relationship with her father (and other people).

What I have been doing to date is picking the category that matches the main theme of the story.

So https://literotica.com/s/because-i-deserve-it is under Incest/Taboo as it only involves the daughter and father (though it has BDSM elements as well).

Whereas https://literotica.com/s/emilys-shorts-club-emily is in BDSM as it is only about BDSM (which just happens to involve the father, daughter and one other person).

Finally https://literotica.com/s/fishing-trip-5 is in Lesbian as it mostly involves the daughter and college friend (with the father getting involved in a threesome at the end)

All involve other categories, e.g. anal etc.

I’m wondering about my approach and whether I would be better categorising them all as Incest/Taboo.

Any thoughts?

You should read TxTallTales' article Love Your Readers:Categories. It explains, better than any other source I know, what Literotica categories are all about and how they relate to one another. Some categories "trump" others, meaning if a story has elements of category A and category B then the story will always be put in category A, regardless of your preferences. Incest is a "trump" category in most cases.

Your mix of kinks might upset readers in those categories because it would appear incest readers, often, don't like anal; and they push back against bdsm. Similarly, bdsm readers appear not to like incest much; and many readers don't like incest turning up without warning, regardless. Your lesbian story, I suspect, will not run well, because you bolt in the father at the end.

But the site can override your category choice and will mostly (but not always) put anything with incest into that category (it's a trump category).

Someone will post a link to a very good "Category Guide" - pay attention to it, it's got good advice. I suspect, though, you might be mixing in a little too much for many readers. People don't always like smorgasbords. (Someone just did, while I was drafting this reply).

Thanks - will read :)

Eek, so I am playing with multiple “trump” categories as all my stuff has Incest/Tabbo and Fetish and most also has BDSM.

So confusing!

Thanks again.

It's not really confusing - if you want to please more readers, you might want to separate your kinks some. If you're writing primarily for yourself, then readers shouldn't matter so much and you can please yourself.

It all depends why you write, what you want from readers in return, what you get out of all this. There is no right or wrong answer, there is no universal or "average" reader, but it's safe to say there are some very strong tribes. You'll figure it out, like the rest of us have.

Thanks - as someone asked, I’m primarily writing for myself, but don’t want to cause problems - I guess you ought to be able to have multiple categories - oh well!

Your story can only be in one category, but it can have multiple tags listing other categories/themes that it touches on. That will help readers find it, whichever category it ends up in. Somewhere around here there is an article explaining the use of the tags.

Make sure you use the right tags.

The site says it's progressing towards a better story selection system which will be more tag based, so use them well.

Be aware, too, that the site is more than twenty years old, and the category system as it stands is unlikely to change. There is no Bisexual category, for example, which is a pretty obvious one to have, I'd have thought.

I am rather anal (no pun intended) about tags, so maybe that helps

I wrote a long brother sister series that featured a heavy BDSM element, scores were good, but very low readership for the series. I started off with one hell of as nasty rough sex scene to set the tone, and many never came back, so the scores were based on the small number of people okay with the kink, or there more for the story, the others ran for the hills.

I suspect I may be doing the same…

'It's OK sweetness. Let's just do twelve strokes. I'll move the mirror so you can see.'

I saw a slim, blonde girl with a pony tail perched on high heels, with a very red ass tied up and ready to be punished. Daddy moved to one side and I closed my eyes, waiting, waiting.

The first tap was gentle, just a rap on one cheek and then on the other. But with my already sore ass, they stung a bit.

'Those don't count angel, just warming you up.'

Then I felt the first proper impact and I had an explosion of pain in my ass and of pleasure between my legs. Not even the ball gag could wholly supress my scream. And then another, on the other cheek. Fuck that was harder, how hard is he going to go? Ten left. I felt new hot tears form in my eyes and trickle down my face.

I would suggest, that if you do have multiple trump categories in one story, you add a disclaimer to the beginning. It would help those that wish to self-select out.

But don't let the possibility deter you. Write the story you want to write. Then figure out how you want to tag it and market it and categorize it. If you've written the story you want to write and some don't like it-- too bad for them. You've done what your muse wanted you to do, and that's what matters most.
