I was downtown a while ago and I was struck by the number of fashion displays that had really blatant BDSM themes. I mean, really blatant. And these in high ticket stores too. Lots of black leather and vinyl, zippers and buckles, fishnet.

Are we trendy now or what?

Been growing so since the mid-late 90s. Blame Brandon Lee.

Doh, I hit submit too early..

Anyway, here's another..

But to not derail Dr M's thread - I used to be involved in the Goth scene here in the UK about 3 years ago. Obviously that's all leather and latex and 'alternative' lifestyles. We (my goth friends and I) noticed, even back then, that slowly the fashion was making its way into high street stores.

Personally, I don't think that it'll ever become mainstream, but I do think that casuals (as we called them) are becoming a bit more adventurous, and dressing up in latex and leather makes them feel naughty. I think that high street fashion is catching on to that.

Maybe it's just a fashion phase that will pass, or maybe it really does mark the start of a trend towards more mainstream acceptance of 'fetish' clothing.

Raph, who's a denim 'n leather fan.

I began reading Vogue in 1963 (its heyday) and remember much lesbian and bdsm undertones and subtext. It's always been in vogue, just rears its heads a bit more at regular intervals.

p.s. my first look at the mag was at a friend's house. I learned that beauty can be disturbing. The issue had a spread on the Russki prima ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya. She did not look like any woman a 15 year old girl in Detroit would think beautiful. Her beauty truly disturbed me, and still does. She is one of the most gorgeous creatures on earth, even today.

I'm the kind of person who dresses more out of Gap and Old Navy than anything else, to be honest.

But I do have to say that when the Goth look is done right (I'm not talking here about those smelly guys who pierce their lips with safety pins, don't bathe for a week and wear a lot of black t-shirts...and call it Goth)... it is very sexy. Who can say that a great looking guy wearing a black duster and a gorgeously put together all-black ensemble beneath (extra points for buckles & zippers put in all the right places) is not totally attractive in that bad-boy kind of way? Tasty, tasty.

I'm not into Bondage or submission sort of things, really. More like, a little "rough" sex and sometimes some pleasure/pain stuff... so I suppose I can't be one of the people who would easily spot those kinds of fashion trends coming straight from the horse's mouth. But I do know attractive and titillating when I see it.

Personally, I don't find leather face masks and ball-gags to be titillating... but I do like "hints" of BDSM in clothing, when done right.

As a minor tattoo "fetishist"... I am however, pleased to say that I love the more mainstream acceptance of tattoos and body modification.

Man... sexy guy in a sophisticated goth outfit....when naked is covered with tattoos.

I need a cold shower.

PS~ Raphy.... *snag*...thanks again.

Reminds me of a story. My godparents are real, honest to god ranchers, and I heard some of the "real" cowboys talking one day about the goth trend and leather.

Cowboy 1: So...did they just figure out we're cool?

Cowboy 2: No...they seem to have smoked enough dope, they think they came up with it.

Cowboy 1: Can you pass the salt?

I just about fell out of the chair.

Whisper :rose: (with a slight addiction to dry, understated humor)

I remember when cowboys and construction workers could sell their old denims to New Yorkers who'd pay outrageous amounts for clothes that were headed for the trash, and I remember Heroine Chic where some mag had their female models posed lying on the floors of public restrooms with needles in their arms, but I always thought High Fashion had more of a snese of subtely than what I saw in these windows. Granted, there were no whips, but there were lots of chains and collars.

Fashion theory says that style passes from the world of sport to the world of fashion.

Well, I guess sex is a sport...

There was also Afro-chic. Anyone recall the embarrassing upscale party Leonard Bernstein threw for the Black Panthers? It was chronicled everywhere including Vogue.
