Magic School/Mind Control Story

Hi,

I'm looking for a story that I read a number of years ago. The main character finds out they have some sort of magic powers, and ends up going to a school in another dimension? There's some odd dream sequence type things. He initially, before getting informed about/recruited to the school, ends up having sex with a woman in a park with his powers semi by accident if I remember correctly.

At the school, there's ranks based on magically ability, that the main character progresses through as they get more skilled. If I remember correctly, there's some sort of woman who becomes a mentor/frenemy type person at the school?

The story is also pretty long, multiple threads if I remember correctly.

I've searched every term I can think of in both the site search and a google search, and haven't been able to find anything. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them, I really enjoyed this story at the time and I'd love to find it again.

I reread the whole thing recently, it had such great potential! I wish IPD took it further and actually got it edited and published, there's the foundation of such a great series there.
