Just wanted to let you lovely folks know that I underwent surgery yesterday. Had an adjustable gastric band installed for weight loss.

Today, I'm confined to the couch with a sore tummy and a bottle of liquid coedine. But the docs said it all went very well!

My ultimate goal is to lose nearly 150 pounds. Most people who have this done lose 2 a week.

I think the hardest to get used to will be the fact that I can't drink any carbonated beverages. Normally, I get all my caffiene for the night shifts from diet cola. Have to take up coffee ... but after 14 years livng in Seattle, the coffee-stand capital of the world, I guess it's high time.

Hope you feel better soon Sabledrake. Talkie informs me that toast is the best medicine after surgery :D.

Good luck with the procedure, Sabledrake.

I was going to say that having a Lap Band installed will be a useful addition for anyone performing a Lap Dance.

But then I decided not to mention it.

Laparoscopic Surgery is not a joking matter.

Very glad to hear you're home and relaxing after the op (as much as you can in such discomfort).

Rooting for ya!

I just knew there was another reason why I liked you Sable, apart from the writing. I must be psychic. (this was after I found out you weren't a guy)

Take care.

Hey X-tine-

Glad everything went well-- kudos to you for making such a brave choice.

Since we live in the same town, and my mother is the CEO Queen Bee of corporate fitness around here, I've watched many people undergo this procedure. I'm pretty sure I know which clinic you went through, and if so, they are extremely conscientious and professional.

It won't always be fun at first, but ultimately it will change your life in a hundred ways, like ripples on a pond.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Love, Nicola

Best wishes! As for the weight loss, 1 to 2 pouinds a weeks works. If you start losing more than 1 or 2 pounds a week, chances are the loss is water or glycogen. Your body will try as hard as it can to maintain normal levels of water and glycogen. Trying to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds a week long term is a recipie for disaster. Good luck!

Hmm...what does your doctor say about this? All the people I know who've had some kind of gastric surgery (one tumor and two pepcids, for the record) said the same thing. None of them could stomach coffee, and their doctors recommended against drinking it.

Anyway, good for you that all went well. Hope it does the job.

Good on you for taking a big step in regaining your health.

May you heal swiftly and without any complications.
We need writers of your caliber here at Lit.

Thanks, everyone! I'm feeling okay at the moment (though the fact that I just finished watching Pirates of the Caribbean might've had something to do with it). ;)

I hadn't heard anything against the coffee. The no-soda thing is because of the bubbles. But for the time being, I'm just sticking with tea. And that weird artifical sweetener that looks like tiny soap flakes.

Nicola > it was Evergreen, in Bothell. And everyone was extremely nice, courteous, and efficient. No complaints at all.

Jenny Craig reject here. Been there, done that.

I hope it works for you hon. I've battled anorexia and bulemia for over ten years. Just don't let weight rule your life.
My career didn't help, just know you have friends here to support you always.

The Jenny Craig thing did work for me, for a while anyway. I was thin in my wedding pictures, but that's basically the only time I've ever been thin since I was 6 years old. But I hated every minute of the Jenny Craig. Awful food, groups led by skinny little girls who'd never been more than two pounds above their ideal weight in their entire lives, having to write down everything ... all it did was force me to concentrate on and obsess about food. And then, as soon as I got pregnant, I ballooned way back up.

Today, the numbing agents they used at the various incision sites have pretty well worn off, so the pain's a bit worse and I'm kind of swollen. But unless I cough or sneeze, I'm hanging in there.

I even talked to my mom -- we've been pseudo-estranged for the past few years -- and she surprised me. I would have expected her to disapprove of this whole thing, but instead she was incredibly supportive and said that she's even considering having the surgery done herself.
