Mac's Irish Pub & Coffee House (OPEN Please Join)

I have seen many role playing threads out there and never feel quite welcome to join. Its not because anyone has said anything but its difficult to appear as a new character. You feel like an intruder on conversations and such.

In that light I have decided to post my own. If it dies a horrible death because I am new then so be it. You will note I am liberally borrowing from threads I have viewed. I bow to the creators and thank them for their creative thinking that gave me the ability to borrow. I am new to role playing and welcome any and all suggestions for improvement.

This is a modern day bar turned somewhat coffee house any where in the US. Its dimly lit and features antiqued brass details with the appropriate amounts of green accents. Lots of aged hard wood and just the right look to make one feel at home.

The town itself is a mixture of different cultures as apparent in its buildings and streets. Just think of your favorite hometown and imagine a friendly bar and coffe house there. That's what I would like to create here. A place that anyone can feel at home and welcome.

Behind the bar is Mary Katherine, so named after her dear mother before her. She is aproximately 5'6", with hazel eyes and long auburn hair, creamy white skin. Truly the apple of her Da's eye. Her Da is Sean, he has run the bar for years. He is a tower of a man for an Irishman at 6ft with red hair, fair skin and green eyes that flash with fire. A recent widower, now running the bar with his daughter at his side. A man built like a brick wall compared to the delicately boned and slim, Mary Katherine.

As you enter she is humming "Danny Boy" in a sultry alto voice, as is her way when she is cleaning. If you're lucky you will hear her sing in the evening.

You note as you enter, the sign above the bar says "Cead Mile Failte" Gaelic
for " a hundred thousand welcomes."

There are no rules except come in character, be pleasant and respectful, tip generously and come back often. Sean doesn't tolerate trouble makers and may force you to leave.

Welcome all to Mac's Irish Pub & Coffee House! The door is open and the drinks are waiting... Come right in and have a seat!

OOC: Always willing to give a new thread a try but what is it we will be doing? Simply roleplaying bar life in an ordinary every day world? Not that is a bad thing mind you but I would like to know your idea behind the thread. :rose:

Guess I should have said that....

Forgive me for not spelling that out. I am thinking that this should be the interaction of characters in a regular bar. The relationships build on the two main characters and those that become regulars. Like a Cheers situation with regular patrons with an erotic or even romantic entanglement or two. Just give the particulars of the character you created and maybe something about their personality. I think the interactions will follow as the characters get to know each other.

Since I am new at this I am open to suggestions and directions. We can have a hand in creating the scene together.

Hope that helps.

No problem it gives me an idea of what kind of character I want to bring in to the bar........even do alittle Sci-fi with a Scientist type guy or a local tough guy. I will give it some thought. Feel free to pm me with your thoughts as well.

OOC: I've never done this before but I have always wanted to. So here goes...

A tall man enters the bar. From his short hair cut and the way he carries himself, you would guess he is a military man. Even though his face is weary, he walks with his back straight and chest high, and with a little strut/swagger that alot of military men have. But it is obvious from the chefs uniform he is wearing and his facial hair that he is not in the military.

He looks around the room and smiles when he sees Mary. "Man am I glad I walked into here", he thinks to himself. If nothing else, at least the scenery is good. He takes a seat at the bar and motions to Mary.

ooc: i'm an orp virgin but there's no time like the present i guess...so here goes...

IC:
The door slams open, a gust of wind and a young girl, in her early 20's blowiing into the bar. Her eyes slightly wild, her short blonde hair a victim of a bad night's sleep, her clothes crumpled, her arms tangled in an array of bags.

She scrambles to the bar, cursing softly as she trips over her bags. Spotting Sean she falls onto the closest stool, deperately asking him, her australian accent, strong, " Could I use your ladies room, please?"

"HI, what can I get ya'" Mary Kate says with her usual smile and flash in those eyes.

"It's right over there to the right. Never let it be said the Sean Danniher denied a lady in distress. Then you sit right down and have a cup of something warm or strong on the house."

He says with a smile in his voice. Wondering to himself what happened to this young woman. She certainly looks like she could use a friend.

Nodding to him, she turns away from the bar, stalls, and turns back to face him again. Seeing his hand on the bar she, uncharateristically, reaches over placing her own small trembling hand on his. Looking into his warm eyes she can't help but smile back.

" Thank you, sir"

The words simple but heartfelt. And as she feels a tear begin its salty trail down her cheek she turns, scoops up her bags and runs to the ladies room.

"It's been a rough night, but its starting to get better", he says and winks at Mary. "I'll take a double Makers Mark. I'm new to the city and tonight was my first night as Executive Chef at the restaurant down the street, La Maisonette. By the way, my name is Carl."

Sean sees the tear and resists the impulse to wipe it away. This gal reminds him of his own Mary Kate. Her simple touch tore at his heart. It was clear that there was something amiss with the lass. He decides he will offer her something hot to drink when she returns. Maybe all she needs is a shoulder to unload on.

He sees her slowly returning after quite a bit. She looked more polished and a tad bit more relaxed. "Here lass, do an old man a favor and sit on this stool for a bit. You look like you could use a breather and something hot to warm ya' up. What' dya say? Its on the house.'

Mary Kate smiles and says "Well Carl its a pleasure to meet you. My name is Mary Kate and this is my Da Sean's place. I know all about rough nights as well. Tell ya' what. You sit and relax and your first drink is on me. But you have to sit and tell me about your night. Who knows maybe I can give ya' some pointers on the city as well. I'll be right back with your drink."

She looks up into his sweet and comforting face and can't help but feel the tension ease a little in her body. Dropping her bags by a stool she climbs onto it, careful not to crease the clothes she's just changed into.
Looking up to see him still watching her intently, she lets out an embarassed laugh.

" I must look a wreck. And yes, I'd love a hot tea, please. "

And though her guarded nature rarely ventured to offer this information freely, she found she owed his at least this for his kindness, she added, " My name's Lynette."

Sean smiles warmly at her..."No lass when you first came in that might have applied. You look a tad more put together now"... the grin conveying his urge to laugh. "I best be getting that tea I promised ya." He turns and walk down the bar to the coffee pots. As he is filling her cup he says "Creme or sugar?"

"The pleasure is all mine, lassie", Carl says in his best poor attempt at an Irish accent. "The first night in a new kitchen always the worst. You have to prove yourself to everyone. And then there is the sous chef, Sara, who thinks they should have promoted her instead of hiring me from the outside. I think she is doing everything she can to undermine my authority and try to make me leave." Carl downs about half his drink in one gulp. "But shes got another thing coming, because I am as stubborn as a tick on a hound dogs backside". Carl grins with a smile that lights up his eyes, "But enough about me and my problems, tell me about this place, or the city, or better yet, tell me about you."

"Well Carl, the city is lovely. The people are warm. Oh the park is beautiful in the spring. The city has one of the largest blues festivals in the country every summer. When the sun shines on the river at the right time you would swear the city streets look like they are made of gold because of the cobble stone. We still have some cobblestone streets in the downtown area. It was part of the revitalization grants the city got several years ago. The streets and store fronts were all redone."

She pauses realizing that she has just rambled on for a full five minutes without a breath. She smiles sheepishly at Carl - who she notices is smiling back and staring contentedly at her.

"I am so sorry for just going on that way. I can't imagine you being a stubborn one. You look like a real sweetie. I can't help but think you'd be fun to work with. Its a shame that gal is making it so hard. I just never understood that kind of malevolent behavior. You get so much more done with honey than vinegar as Da' says." She winks at him flirtatiously. "Can I refill that glass for you?"

Carl is smiling at her and staring into her eyes, listening intently to her every word. "I have always heard this is a nice city, but I haven't had much of a chance to explore it, or had someone to show me around. Yeah, its sad that some people just have to be that way. She should think of the detrimental effect her behavior will have on our whole team. But she does have some good qualities too, so I will try my best to make things work and motivate her in a positive direction." Carl pushes his glass towards her and says, " I would love a refill, please. I like to think I am a good guy, but I can be stubborn, especially when I find something I really feel is right. And don't feel bad about going on, I could sit and listen to you talk for hours. Oh, heck, for that matter, I could just sit and stare at you without talking for hours."

Her fair skin begins to turn a bright red. "Ah go on now. You're very kind but I'm nothing special. Just an every day working girl. You are very sweet to say that though. If it means anything to you... You seem like a good guy, not hard to get along with at all. For the record I do hope that you stay around. I am hoping you will come in here a lot." With that she takes his glass and walks down the bar to refill it.

Carl smiles at her and says, " I could tell after the first 3 minutes of conversation you were something special. And you can count on me staying around. You'll probably end up charging me rent for the bar stool. You mentioned a blues festival in the city. Do you like that kind of music?"

She laughs nervously at his compliment and blushes more. "Well with that kind of talk I may let you have the stool for free. The drinks you have to pay for once in a while though." Winking at Carl as she says it.

"Music, well just call me a 'well rounded misfit'. My mother loved everything from classical to rock. Da, now he is the one that turned me on to blues. I love to listen to Buddy Guy, Ray Charles, but Stevie Ray Vaughn is by far my favorite. Even a little Muddy Waters now and then can be heard in here. Being that this is a very Irish establishment we do have to honor the Celtic music now and then though." again laughing and winking at him. She is surprised to find how quickly she has taken to this visitor. Its not as though she really "knows a stranger" but with him she has opened up more than usual. What does this mean? She thinks to herself. Before she could answer he was speaking to her.

Carl smiles inside and out at the sound of her laughter. He can't believe how comfortable he feels talking to her. "I can't believe it, I like all kinds of music, but when it comes to blues Stevie Ray Vaughn is my favorite too. If you haven't heard them yet, you should check out the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. The sound is eerily similar to Vaughn. I would be glad to let you borrow my CD." Winking at her, " I think I can trust you with it. Besides, it would give me an excuse to come back in here. Not that I really need to make one up." Carl stares into her eyes, searching for answers to questions he is afraid to ask. "You have been so hospitable. I have so enjoyed the pleasure of your company, and you even bought me a drink. Please allow me to return the favor by being my guest for dinner at the restaurant. And please bring your dad. I would like a chance to impress him before I ask for his daughters hand in marriage." Carl laughs and winks, "Ok, just kidding about the marriage thing, at least for now."
