"M/M romance fetishises queer lives"

"M/M romance fetishises queer lives"?

What does that even mean?

I think it's saying that by writing about M/M sex, the authors are ignoring that gay men are whole people.

Duh.

That's what all porn is about!

Dear god, reading that lambda literary comment section made my eyes bleed. I think that the type of bashing that went on in it is EXACTLY why the straight community feels alienated by gays and feel the need to lash back. There is a distinct and real difference between fiction and reality. M/M fiction isn't going to necessarily "CAUSE" the objectification of the lgbt community. It's like the people who think video games cause children to go on shooting sprees. It may desensitize and some of the less intelligent ones might think what they're reading is real but besides some misguided ideas on homosexuality. Victoria Brownsworth reminds me of a NAACP organizer who came to talk at our high school. He claimed in front of the entire school body that our principle was a racist because he hadn't introduced the man as Dr. Btw, that man went on to make several blatant sexist remarks like calling a student honey and asking if he'd be seeing some of these "fine girls" out of school.... oh and my favorite "Our lips might be bigger but it's because we're better kissers." Really, unless someone is talking about treating real life gays, lesbians, bisexuals, or transsexuals like sex objects I'm not overly worried. I just feel those kinds of attacks on the het community really contribute a lot to why so many feel we're "imposing" our beliefs on them.

I actually recently posted on a thread about prop 8 in debate about the validity of Judge Walker's right to make his ruling. A few liberals were attacking the man as a bigot (now, this WAS the general board) and my response was I don't care if he's prejudiced it's not like we aren't prejudiced against conservatives, what matters is if his argument has sound legal standing. I think we as a community spend too much time attacking people for their moral beliefs instead of addressing purely our own rights as a people. Sorry for the tangent stella.

Naw-- this person is bitching that the Romance genre does try to invent lives for its characters. And that the life experience of being gay is what's being harped on.

It's kinda precious way to think of it, IMO.

And yanno what? Victoria Brownsworth has written gay male erotica herself. Under a male pen name. http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Age-Lesbian-Erotica/dp/0977431142 (read the "about the author" bit. )

whoah, can we be any more defensive! See-- I could imagine that kind of talk in the early seventies maybe.

Eh, I dunno.

I think GLBT individuals have the right to express their qualms and insecurities and angers in Out Magazine and Lambda... it isn't as though we can talk about this stuff in straight magazines.

I think it's a bit nutso that Out let Cintra Wilson do her hatchet job that way, especially right after she'd just gotten her ass whupped for fatphobic insults in an article about J.C. Penny's.

But I think Erastes and Alex both came off pretty well, despite Cintra's attempts to fuck with them.

It's one of the problems I have with the NAACP, some of the members I've met like to feel like they're still fighting for the right to sit at the front of the bus. Not to say there isn't discrimination... because there is, and I'm not saying that in this day and age we've moved past it but... that said I don't agree with their direction these days. I feel like when you're hyper defensive about things and try to force other's to shape their views through whatever tactic whether it be guilt or fear of being labeled a racist/homophobe/sexist then you alienate people to your group. I guess that's my issue with PC, while yes it keeps a nice veneer of civility, it weakens the foundation. Honestly I think we should be pushing for legal equality and leaving it at that. I have a rule I've lived by my entire life that serves me well "You can't change a person but you can shape how they grow" I don't think alienating people helps shape them into acceptance. I think that's why to this day we still have so many problems with racial tensions.

It wasn't the article that annoyed me, it was the comments the article's author made bellow that made me cringe. She basically went off on anyone who disagreed with her using a bunch of personal attacks.

If only the majorities cared as much about alienating people!

Nope, sorry, being a weirdass dyke doesn't make me a saint. it just makes me alienated. And every time I hear someone make a remark about "all women.." it just fucking rubs my alienation in my face. And I'd rather take it out on someone's hide than internalise. Internalising is bad for me. ;)

The article was covert. the insults were overt-- but merely made clear what she was implying in the article.

WHAT were they thinking giving her a platform!:D

On a loosely related topic.
