M.A.D

(a four AM creation.)

M.A.D, Mutially Assured Destruction.

the fear of the cold war for us passed more or less harmlessly. but in a world of alternate dimentions, in this world, it did not. after the nuclear arms stock buldup in Turkey, the Soviet Union responded by arming Cuba, creating the well known Cuban Missile Crisis. an american blockade was set up around the island, and the President of the U.S. made his declaration that unless all missiles were disarmed and removed, he would destriy all the ships in the carribian, and then launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the U.S.S.R.

this is where the similarity ends. The soviet Union had divisions circling the silos in Turkey, and knew that if the States launched, by the time that their missiles would hit, the U.S.S.R. would be able to launch their thermonuclear warheads. the blockade was therefore overrun.

The American President not having this insight came through with his declaration, and as soon as the blockade had been violated, thousands of nukes were on their way to Russia and it's buffer countries.

Russia launched back, sweeping the states with death. the rest of the U.S.S.R. launched on the U.S allies, destroying Britain, France, Germany, most of west europe. In responce to this, western euopean nuclear powers launched on the reminants of the U.S.S.R.'s influence zones, the Middle East and the carribean.

to make a long story short, every first world country excepting Alaskan United States, Canada, and the upper reaches of Siberia, have been utterly destroyed. Nuclear fallout did not respect borders, and killed most of southern Canada as well. leaving only the frozen north untouched.

nukes also touched death into mexico, leaving only the far north, central america, Australia, and it's surrounding nations, and part of africa alive.

for twenty years, the world cowered, and healed. nuclear fallout would not dissapear for many years to come, but something strange happened, diring this time, a change in evolution happened. those people not in the blast radius did not all die. suffering from severe radiation poisoning, lukemia and other diseases claimed many lives, but over time, the human body coped and overcame this. people in central Canada, and southern mexico, the coasts of Asia, and the northern phillipines lived. their bodies were horribly disfigured, skin took on a new meaning, for some it did not exist, rather a strange film covered their body, for others the skin melted, and cracked, andthen hardened, leaving them a shell. bones became more flexible, or stiffened even farther, these mutants peoples were both very unique, and very weak. certainly able to live their lives, and with a higher immune system than a regular human, but natural defences, like an entire body with flesh, or seeping holes therough their torso, that revealed pulsing organs left them as frail beings without some kind of external armor.

After twenty years, the normal world has comeback to claim what is there's, a decade of slaughter and massacres of the evolved took place, the australians, and the central americans, northerners moving back to capture what was inhabitable of Mexico, Canada, Asia. the major blast zones still would not let a man live longer than a few days, but out of them came strange beasts, it'ssaid that cockroaches and beetles can survive the kind of radiation that a nuke gives off, but the constant doses have left worms the size of trains burrowing underground, beetles the size of cars and other creatues, misformed greatly, some able to secrete and project acidic saliva, and such. these beasts now roam freely, keeping withing the mutant world for the most part, for their survival among normal people is gunned down.

you may think that we are taking back out land, regaining what is ours, raising civilization back from the ashes, but we are not. finally we are taking course, we are the vile sludge belched back from death into this world. after a decade of massacres we have found outselves, and also found the will to fight, to carry on, to create our world, if for nothing else than to be left alone. but what can a group of poorly armed freaks do against the trained thugs the new world sends in, armed, armored, and with the gleam of conquest in their eyes?

Iris

Iris rubbed his eyes and yawned. it was a grey day, in a green city. the fog was deep today he looked up into the sky and cleared the sleep away. he was looking up into the bright, yet grey skies. far down below he heard the sweishing of the tall grass, and a few people passing by. but they were in another place, he was 26 stories up, on the top floor of a skyscraper. age and lack of maintenance left the upper floors cracked and falling apart with the exposure to the wind and weather.

the room Iris was in had lost it's celing nearly a decade ago, and up in that cloaked blanket of grey, chopper blades had brought him to consiousness.

he listened to them, following their path, the beat of the chopper blades faded to the south, and stopped. but they stopped far too fast to have passed out of earshot, the chopper had landed.

rushingto the elevator shaft he lept into the abyss, looping a cloth around the support cables, he went rushing down down down, tightening the cloth slowed him, and then he hit the nets.

long pieces of elastic came under him at the fifth floor, stretching for his weight, the cloth ripped into two with the burning friction from the cable, but he was caught. when the nets stopped and held him, he jumped off, and ran towards the sound of the chopper....

Jake Porten, world-renowned hunter and millionaire, put the scope to his eye, slowly and carefully, his breath slowing to the point it was no longer traceable. The massive, 1.5 meter M82A1 sniper rifle he cradled was slightly adjusted as Jake perfected his aim. They'd been hunting this last one for days. After the massacre of his village, he had gone running, they tracking. With his extremely large legs, he had led Jake's group on quite a chase. But Jake and his men had the advantage of vehicles, and had driven their Humvees after him the whole while. Now, he lay near a small pool of water, resting, even as Jake finished adjusting. One loud crack broke the silence and when Jake looked through the scope again, the mutant was still there, minus a head and half of his torso. He stood, breathing out slowly, and walked to the Humvees, where the rest of his group lounged. "Get him?" asked Brad. "Would I be talking to you if I didn't?" Jake retorted. Brad shrugged his shoulders, and slipped back into the Humvee. Jake and the other two men followed suit. The Humvee drove off, its partner following. They had spied some smoke to the West. Probably a village. Well, not for long.

Axis

The lessened heat on his skin woke Axis, his senses realizing it was time to wake up his body. Cracking his necks, Axis concentrated his hearing to his immediate environment. The room he was in was still the same, nothing had encrouched into the crumbled brick structure that had been his home for the night. Both of his left arms reached for the hollow-out gourd that he had filled with water, but his upper arm proved dominant and Axis Major was the first to receive the refreshing drink. Axis Minor headbutted him in quest of some of the thirst quenching water, but Major had finished it all. With a laugh, Major spoke to Minor, *Now you will have to bring our body to water if you want to drink. Next time you should be faster to the water.* Major relaxed his neck as he let Minor control their overlarge body in search of water.

The lukewarm water was slightly gritty but it tasted like Ambrosia to the parched throat of Minor. His radar sense showed a slight movement about 200 yards to the north. Its approximate size signaled that it was probably a variant of the Northlands deer. Taking the crossbow from the scabbard on his back, Minor sighted along the end to line up his sight for the kill. Major reached over and tried to grab the crossbow, just as the bolt was about to release. The bolt went wide as the angle had been changed. *See what you have done Major, you just lost us breakfast. Next time, leave me alone to finish a hunt.*

Iris

ducking into a hole in a building he looed out through a shattered window, everything was fog, there was nothing to be seen anywhere in this blasted mist. Iris sat there, watching, listening, and waiting. slinging the ancient rifle from around her shoulders and watching for anything.

he wasn't sure what rifle he had, flipping through gun magazines he had learned alot about balistics and the different models, but this one was rusted, and banged up beyond certainty.

then after several minutes he heard a noise, a voice.

moving back to the doorway he picked up a rock, and threw it as far as he could, which wasn't too far, but it would do the job. comming back to his wondow at about the same time the rockhit, he layed down his sights and waited.

the sound of the rock impacting with the concrete of a closeby building caused three of the members of the party to spi and open fire. and so they should, no one in this land is friendly to them.

tracing the flashes of fire in the mist Iris pumped the bolt action, pulling off three shots, every time his rifle kicked at him, one of the yellow lights would arc up to the sky and stop, or drop a few deet to the ground.

three down, one though, relocate.

"Break!" ordered Jake, causing the driver in the first Humvee to grind the vehicle to a halt, the second coming up shortly behind it. He swung out of the vehicle, then climbed onto the hood. The others got out too. "What's up?" asked Frank. "We're going to have a half-hour break. Get some lunch cooked up. Either hunt it down or use one of our packs. I wants as little smoke as possible, understand? Brad, I want you to scout this next village. You are, under no circumstance, to open fire. They'll all just run off if they know we're here. Understood? Good."
