Interestingly enough, Bill W., one of the founding members of Alcoholics Anonymous, went to Canada in the very late 50s to look into research being done there on a new experimental drug, LSD. The researchers there proposed that it might be useful in treating addictions and obesity. Bill W. participated in some of the experiments and reported that LSD would be helpful in treating alcoholism. He was purportedly disappointed and angered when funding was pulled from the project and the US, despite Dr. Timothy Leary's testimony, refused to allow research to continue. Bill W. remained convinced that LSD was the wonder drug to treat alcoholism until his dying day.
