I dunno about you but any news channel, any north american place any province, any terrirtory, any state when you tunr on the news lately they seem to talk of an all time low for unemployement. Saying that more people are working now than ever before.

My thougth is from my local Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada as my viewing source.

The town just put out in its local rag of a paper that unemployent is at an all time low of 1.2% unemployed.

But is that really good really reflective numbers?

More and more employes are hiring only part imte temp workers of under 20 hours a week so that they can get away without paying the usual benefits etc. Gerenatlly its cheaper to pay 2 people this way than 1 full time 40 hour a week person

My question is yes more people are working these piddly jobs but they for the most part still have to be supplimented by some sort of government aid.

My question is it really fair to say we have lowunemployeent when people really are barely employed at a max of 20 hours a week, more often than not 14 or less.

Or should we just go with it and feel good, or should job types be investigated and see if they really count as a job for nationaly statistics?

I believe that the jobless figures are derived from who is collecting unemployment money during the reporting period. I really don't think anybody is going around quizzing employers about their hiring practices. The numbers could, conceivably, be from a large number of people exceeding their unemployment benefits, and being erroneously counted as working.

I'm not sure about it, but I am sure that someone else around these parts would know.

Low unemployment?

You must not be anywhere near California, out here the unemployment rate is going up. The industry I work in (manufacturing) is actually being hammered pretty hard. No sense making products when the masses aren't buying.

Yes. At least in the states, the rate of unemployment is determined by how many people are collecting unemployment benefits. It fails to take into consideration the people for whom benefits have run out and who were not able to find a job.

We have had 5 paper mills close within a hundred mile radius from here......and for three of them, the 26 weeks have run their course. So those hundreds of people are no longer part of the percentage given for unemployment. (In an area as rural as this, 800 jobless people is significant.) However, they are not any better off as there are no jobs.

So, Todd....you are wise to ask questions and remain skeptical.

:)

Hey, Todd knows what he's talking about!

he said this -
"any news channel, any north american place any province, any terrirtory, any state when you tunr on the news lately they seem to talk of an all time low for unemployement. Saying that more people are working now than ever before."

He knows because he's watching the news channels from all over North America.

Todd, once again you are spewing shit that is not true. Not technically true anyway.

I am one of those people out of work, out of work since one week since I came back form my fucking honeymoon Todd. Companies are using Sept. 11th as a terrible excuse for laying off or even firing people. Just look at the airlines, they started not more than two days after the tragedies, saying this is killing our industry. Corporate America is made up of plenty of liars, liars whose money helps puts the even bigger liars who are the politicians into office. Politicians who pass these numbers down to make their politcal parties look good or the other one(s) to look bad.

Todd, I fear the day, that you actually have an intelligent response to someone who's calling you out, on the shit you spew here.

I hope you're not holding your breath waiting for that.

BTW, Todd, the U.S. unemployment rate rose to 5.4% at the end of October, the highest since 1996. Funny how every news channel in North America is getting it wrong.

Thomas Paine -

How many of your 200 + posts have been dedicated to telling Todd to fuck off in various ways? :D

Apparently not enough.

Anyway, everybody needs a hobby. Although I am trying to lay off. It's just too damn easy...

You have to work to get such Benefits...

It's not Welfare...If you don't use it you lose it, and it goes in Kennedy's pocket...I collect my benefits from working in Alaska...You know who's ripping people off? It's places that pay cash everyday for manual labor, I just know they're being subsidized somehow by the Government to pad their Retoric:eek:
