Loving Wives - Hitting a Nerve

I posted an LW story "Unique Rewards of Yoga", ... "Wife has extra fun with her late-night yoga class."

Okay, I'm used to the usual disparaging comments and low ratings. It's currently (less than 24 hours since it went public) at 2.82 with 183 votes and well over 11K views.

I went to great pains to ensure that I addressed concerns of the husband (sort of) giving his permission, the wife in FULL control of her agency, the husband getting what he wanted, no threat of pregnancy, and even some controls to reduce threats of STDs.

The nerve I struck was with one regular commenter in LW, who usually post a paragraph (several sentences) long comment. THIS time he went overboard and in three hours, every hour he posted a much longer (negative) comment. He used a lot of words in all CAPS, with the general theme of "DIVORCE!"

But he did end one comment saying "Sorry. It must have been such excellent writing that made me feel part of the story. LOL Thanks for the effort."

I consider this a JACKPOT! (Even at 2.82)

I've rarely if ever, even in LW, seen somebody post more than one comment, let alone three. He seems to need some Xanax to calm down.

But - I've mentioned Nathanael West's concept of "excited disgust" (The Day of the Locust). In other words, secretly or not so secretly being fascinated with what one is pretending to condemn. I got the feeling from him that he is probably getting off imagining being either the husband or the yoga train gang or maybe both. "A cheating fucking whore." I wonder if he'd like to get a shot at her himself.

Loving Wives commenters are dorks.

This is a genre I've written in a number of times, because it's a story premise that I do find alluring. But so many people use these stories as a sounding board for their own bitterness and terribly possessive feelings towards their partners that I feel I've done all I care to do. My last story, "In The Box," is a story whose main character is your typical LW commenter, sharing the same sense of regressive sexual morality and Old Testament sense of justice. It's me working through my sorrow at not being able to relate my wonderful, passionate feelings about this scenario to these people, in the grimmest fashion possible. It's my joke on them. I showed them that the person they rage against is themselves, if only they cared to see. The worst kind of partner.

Anyway, probably every writer whose ever tried this category can relate to your experience. I think they're so upset precisely because the writing is involving. They just can't see it that way. They're too angry.

I am not sure why a person even reads a story in genre that they are either not interested in or disgusts them. If a person is bitter about a marriage, why setup yourself up for more bitterness by reading a story in LW that is going to anger them all over again. Seems self defeating.

I think it must be very difficult to get a good rating unless you are writing an incest story!
Lit seems to be based on incest for some reason, just look at all the top stories.

It seems so, most all porn is taboo based these days. Although I'm not into incest, I do love older women and there are plenty of them in the industry because of it.

Actually, I/T doesn't draw the best ratings. It tends to be in the middle of the pack somewhere.

Generally speaking, incest gets some of the most views - but not the highest average rating. A broader audience often means a slightly less happy one.

Some people who've been through a traumatic experience need therapy, talking it out among others who've had a similar experience. Soldiers suffering PTSD for example.

So, I see this LW situation as, not trolls, but some coming from broken marriages, and looking for that connection of "YES, that's how it feels!"

The poster of the comments on my story even recognized his over-reaction and LOLed about it. Maybe this is a guy who found a video of his wife in a gangbang, (consensual for her, but unknown to him) and they divorced. He might be reading LW stories to see if anyone else has such an experience and how they dealt with it. Mine might have struck that nerve closer than others.

I'm also amused by all the STD comments, like (paraphrasing), "Oh wow! That sounds like a real STD fest!"

Makes me want to ask, "As you visualize fucking someone while masturbating, are you wearing a condom in your fantasy?"

Or while watching a Marvel super-hero movie do you remark, "Well that's crazy! He/she is apt to get a concussion from all that fighting!"

Not sure if you have found the delete button for those negative comments, I had one negative comment in loving wives (before i found the delete button), then another reader had a go back at them saying they constantly make pissy remarks in loving wives tales, then I got another bite from the idiot. If someone wants to give constructive criticism I'm all for it, bit this was as you have all said above, just someone who should refrain from reading LW tales if it upsets their moral compass so much.

Where else would traumatized readers find stories of kindred sexual experiences to see how others react, even if it's a bad experience such as their wife cheating on them?

This is how I believe the LW audience becomes so angry.

But I don't WANT to delete their comments.

IMO, even the negative comments come from someone who has a right to voice their opinion.

In the case on my story, I've read that particular poster's comments on other of mine and other author's stories. This is the first time I've seen so many and so strongly worded reactions from that poster! They're not violent threats toward ME, just a very strong reaction to the story situation. And the fact the poster went back to the story twice within hours to post yet two more comments ...

If it were just "this was shitty writing", they wouldn't bother to return for more comments. But in this case, it's a WIN! (even with 1-bombs!)

Go over to Medium. There are a LOT of women who write about how their divorce screwed them financially, often with the same type of complaints you see in LW comments, even occasionally with a violent fantasy or two.

You've confused a bunch of issues here. One can be perfectly tolerant and still point out what is obvious about the world. I am not a believer in objective or subjective realities, and recognize "different strokes for different folks," but not to the point that I deny obvious cause-effect relationships.
