Having just had my eighth story accepted, I think its time I understood how the voting system works. How is it possible for a story to be No 1 in the Top Stories list but to drop out of the list completely (500 entries) within just a two hour period? This happens everytime! Is it possible to 'nobble' someone else's ratings? How many low votes would be needed. Can readers vote more than once for the same story? So many questions...

that happened to me too... seems it only need a few low votes and then once the story drops, less people see it to boost its rating.

oddly, mine happened after a couple of people in chat heard me mention it... one is another writer, the other is their friend.

strange times.

It is easy with a very few votes - less than 10 or so, to carry a 5.0 rating. It becomes far harder as more votes accrue to maintain a top list rating.

Only one vote per IP address is kept, and generally all votes of 1 are removed in the troll sweeps. I suppose, if a voter wanted to vote multiple times, it could be done from separate computers, accounts, or with IP spoofing, but I doubt that this would happen outside of the contests.

Sitting on the top of the list gets you more exposure, presenting your story to more people. That exposure also offers your story to more people who do not necessarily like the catagory you write in, those who cruise the toplist looking for a speed stroke, and other things that can bring about a legitimate vote which may bring your average down. It takes a *darn* good story to sit in the top 15 for very long with less than 20-25 votes in your catagory, or the top page of the overall toplist.

The trolls are hard at work as well, bombing anything on the top of the list regularly. It appears they have moved on to two and three bombing, seeing that one bombing was regularly being erased by the sweeps.

The rating number they seem to aim for is 4.93, if it is higher than that, it is goin' down.

Sitting right on the top of the list is begging to be bombed, especially when it is that final tenth 5 vote. A one bomb brings your score down to 4.63, two is 4.73, and three is 4.81... all of these drop you out of the overall top 500, and will slap you down into the middle pages in catagory ratings or out of the toplist entirely.

If this happens to you regularly, don't worry too much about the toplist and just be happy because you have a loyal group of readers large enough to get you that Red "H" on each story :) As you submit new stories, new readers will notice it in the recent list, read your previous work, and your other story ratings will recover in time from troll bombs and legitimate drops.

Thanks Dark.

it does seem that once you are on the top you suddenly get a couple of '1' votes, it's happened with each of mine. As you say, the ratings do climb back up over time.

I have red H's for all mine, so it's not a real worry, just seems sad that some people feel the need to bomb.

Cheers.

What's a troll?

For the purposes of the discussion at hand, a troll is a person who low votes stories ( probably without even reading them ) to knock down the rating.

Overall, and internet troll is somebody who jumps in, causes some sort of annoying damage, and then vanishes until it is time to once more crawl out from under their bridge and be a pain again. The only satisfaction they have in their pitiful, meaningless existance is to annoy people.

( The bridge is their mother's basement where they live on a steady diet of cheezy poofs, one minute free porn clips, and cruising AOL chatrooms asking "ASL? U CYBER?" )

Trolls...

As with any human system, there are always those that will exploit it or abuse it. Thank you Dark. Now I know what they are called in here.

Isn't human nature wonderful!? No. Wait. Trolls aren't human. I apologize.
