Closed for myself and Lost Pirate
It was the summer after high school graduation, and Nick Travis was terrified. Most people were probably a bit scared after high school, because who, at 18, actually knew what the hell they wanted to do for the rest of their lives? But Nick was more socially awkward than most. He was about 5’8”, 165 pounds, with a rather scrawny frame, messy black hair, and glasses. More than one person had noted that he looked like Harry Potter, and while those remarks made him livid, even Nick had to admit that they weren’t far off.
But Harry Potter was much more popular, however. Nick, while not classed as a “geek” or a “nerd” and had most certainly not been a member of the chess team or the math club, had spent his high school years just being…there. He wasn’t liked or unliked, popular or unpopular. He had some close friends who were also not easily fit into any particular clique.
Nick sometimes wished that he had been classified as a loser, or a nerd, because at least they got noticed. If he’d been beaten up every day, or called names by the jocks, then at least it would have somehow served as a perverse reminder that he existed. But he had floated along, untouched and unnoticed, and was facing the prospect of going away to college in the same way. Except college was even bigger – thousands of people, instead of just hundreds, and how was he going to get noticed in a place like that?
The saddest part about leaving for college, however, was the thought that he wouldn’t get to see Anna Cole anymore. He had known her for years – she’d been his first crush, in fact. The first time he’d masturbated, actually, it was thinking about her. She wasn’t exactly the girl-next-door, since she technically lived three houses down, but he thought of her in the girl-next-door-way. They’d never been friends, but they were friendly enough, and they had shared the same bus to school for years – that is, until senior year, when she’d gotten a brand-new car to drive to school and he’d still been relegated to the bus. Nick thought that pretty much summed up his life.
So he was a little shocked – well, okay, a lot shocked – when she called him up one Tuesday evening that summer and asked if he was busy.
He’d stared at the phone in complete disbelief. What did Anna want with him?
