Tikara daughter of the Ancient Egyptian God Khonsu. Her mother a mystery though the Gods have their suspicions. Even Thoth does not hold the answer to this riddle.

She stood with the Lunar Gods and Goddesses as well as those that dealt with death the afterlife. Her father Khonsu known as the devourer of hearts. His payment for guiding the pharaohs through the underworld to slay lesser "gods" and gain the power to be reborn.

Osiris had spoken it was time that she spend time away from the darkness and shadows and live among the other Gods and her father agreed. Ra stood watching a sly smile on his face curious who would seek the young goddess eye or heart.

As he called each the great voice of Osiris boomed out as he made his way along the list of the young Gods and Goddesses now to dwell in the sacred temple.

TIKARA... DAUGHTER OF KHONSU.

Tikara took a step forward to Osiris and offered a bow before looking warily to those gathered around. The depths of the underworld were her home and all the bright light and life unnerved her. It was a far different energy from the thoughts hopes and dreams of those in the underworld.

The great temple was in an uproar, preparing for the new arrivals. Mortal priests and priestesses busied themselves with preparing each altar with gifts that were divined to be appropriate to please each god and goddess who would climb the stone steps from the dark depths of the underworld, descend the clouded path from heaven, leap forth from the pillar of holy fire, or emerge from the parting waves of the immortal sea.

The elder gods were all formality, they had seen this all before and were far from impressed. They were there to fill their necessary functions and when they were finished they would depart again to their preferred realms. The younger gods who would remain to live in the temple with the new arrivals, were all a gossip, whispering about who was coming, each trying to impress the others with their superior knowledge of divine parentage, and repeating what rumors had reached them of their future companions' other-worldly exploits.

Only Nefertum stood alone, assigned to wait among the young gods, but required to maintain sacred posture, in a gesture of welcome, as the elder gods were doing. He was not free to relax and gossip with the others.

Nefertum was young. He had only arrived at the sacred temple a year ago. His previous home had been the realm of waters, and he still missed the peaceful solitude of the world beneath the waves. But he was different than the other young ones. He was, despite his youth and inexperience, counted among the elder gods, for he had dwelt among the living countless times before, a thousand lifetimes his grandfather Ra had told him. Nefertum had no memory of those lives. He did have some sort of instinct about the mortal world. He often understood things without being told, and he seemed more comfortable among the clumsy, dirty mortals than the other gods of his apparent age. But despite these advantages, his life in the temple was a constant trial. The elder gods often appeared to show him undue favor, which evoked jealousy and contempt from his peers, but he was also held to impossibly high standards. He was continuously criticized, and compared to his previous incarnations.

Nefertum shifted uncomfortably, trying to ease his aching muscles while keeping his heavy headdress from tumbling to the ground. He wanted nothing more than to strip out of this hideous ceremonial garb, and sink into the clear water of the sacred pool at the back of the temple grounds... or perhaps dress in common cloth and disappear into the crowded market. There could be none of that until after the completion of ceremonies; the purification of the temple, the preparation of the altars, the opening of the sacred portals, the naming of arrivals, the baring of gifts, and the recital of the prayer of unity and prosperity.

When Osiris finally began speaking the names, Nefertum gave an audible sigh of relief, which drew the stern eye of his foster mother Bastet. He willed himself to straighten his body and endure in silence. He was determined to get through the lengthy event without incident, and might have done so too, if the fates and his peers had only been a little kinder to him.

The name, "TIKARA... DAUGHTER OF KHONSU," was spoken, and the goddess that stepped forward took Nefertum's breath away. It was not merely that she was beautiful, though she easily outshone the proudest of the vain goddesses that dwelt within the temple. No, she possessed something more than just beauty. There was a gentle sweetness in her eyes that called to mind the comfort of cool waters, while still containing the spark of warm passions. It seemed as if her eyes met his, if only for a moment, and then it happened... a sudden blunt blow to his shin. If he had been properly focused it would not have phased him. He could have stood his ground despite the ill timed prank, for surely one of the other gods had kicked him. But he was distracted, and the blow threw him off balance. He was able to right himself quickly, but the heavy ornate lotus crown clattered to the ground. He couldn't decide if he should retrieve the crown, and place it back on his head, or if it would be better to continue holding the gesture of welcome and leave the crown on the ground. He looked to Bastet for some clue as to which was the proper action, but he could discern nothing but disapproval from her grim feline frown. Finally one of the priests ran forward to retrieve the crown and return it to Nerfertum's head.

Once all the introductions were over and the other had returned home leaving her there for her year of learning and finding a niche of mortal worshipers she ran. All of the light and life was a little overwhelming for her. Not knowing where she was going or what she would find she merely sought even a shadow something to offer her the comfort of darkness. She finally found the shelter of shadow by a partial wall divider in the marketplace. Crouching there she closed her eyes missing the sounds of the hopes and dreams of the dead and denizens of the underworld.

Opening her eyes she was however face to face with a little girl who smiled to her.

Are you okay?

The little girl asked almost fearlessly to the young Goddess. Tikara for a moment envied the child her bravery.

Yes I am fine little one just... A long way from home that is all.

In all of the commotion after the closing of the ceremony, Nefertum lost track of the beautiful Tikara. It was a shame, because more than anything, Nefertum wished to apologize for the disrespectful display he had caused during her welcome.

As soon as Nefertum was at liberty to do so, he retired to his private chamber, the priest Keiftu, attending him. The priests and priestesses were meant to be servants to the gods and goddesses, but in truth Keiftu had become more of a friend than a servant to Nefertum, which was a great relief to the young god, who had no true friends among the gods. The company of Keiftu was a welcome relief after all of the pomp and ceremony.

"I almost died when you dropped the crown!" Keiftu laughed, as he helped Nefertum disrobe. "Not that I would have done any different. She's a pretty one that Kitara. I shall have to go see the high priest tomorrow and see if I can get myself reassigned to her retinue. I would like to serve her morning, noon, and night! 'What is that oh divine one? You would like some more of Keiftu's powerful cock? My only wish is to serve you pleasure!'"

"Her name is Tikara, and don't be disrespectful Keiftu!" Nefertum snapped at his friend, "You are too low a worm to ever please such a one as she." As soon as Nefertum spoke harshly to his friend, he regretted his words. He quickly shifted to a playful tone, "Besides I've seen your cock... if she were to request it, it would only be because she was feeling sad, and needed to look at something that would make her laugh."

The play between friends was interrupted by the sound of footsteps in the antechamber to Nefertum's room. "Quickly Keiftu, help me dress." Nefertum grabbed the common street clothes that he had stolen and hidden away in his chest. He was fully clothed by the time a female voice announced the presence of Bastet, Lady of Justice.

"Tell her I am dressing and will be out shortly!"

"But you won't be, will you?"

"Of course not. My mother can shout at me tomorrow. Right now I deserve a bit of peace."

"You want me to lie to The Great Goddess of Justice and Retribution? Do you wish me dead, my lord?"

"She will not punish you for my deception. Please Keiftu!" but the pleading was not necessary, Keiftu was oath bound to carry out Nefertum's wishes.

Keiftu stepped out into the antechamber to address the goddess, and Nefertum, face hidden, carrying a chamber pot, followed directly behind, and slipped out of the chamber without raising the slightest suspicion.

Once Keiftu had cleared the temple, he was free to relax. He was well known in the market, but not as a god... most everyone knew him as Faytum, a well mannered merchant. He had even struck a few business deals, selling sweet perfumes of his own design that were currently being sold by some of the most reputable vendors in the marketplace.

He was passing the stall of just such a vendor when he saw Renzi, the vendor's young daughter, speaking to a woman who crouched in the shadow of the wall. The woman was faced away from him, but from her posture she seemed to be in some form of distress or discomfort. "Fair afternoon to you most beauteous Renzi! Who is your friend?"

The little girl shrugged she had not thought to ask the frightened Goddess her name.

I think she is lost... Or home sick. You talk to her I will get some of mommy's honey bread for her.

The little girl seemed quite proud of herself for the idea of the honey bread as she quickly ran to her mothers market stall.

Faytum advanced a few steps, but paused before getting too close. He did not wish to alarm her. "Are you lost my lady? I would be pleased to help you find your way. I remember when I first arrived here. I was like a child, overwhelmed by all of the strange sights and sounds, but now this is all familiar to me... still, nothing like home. I am called Faytum, and I am at your service."

Tikara looked to him.

You... You were in the temple.

She slowly stood up and biting at her lip briefly before speaking again.

I am Tikara

The little girl had run back at this time with a small plate full of food.

I showed mommy who you were and she said to bring a whole offering. Mommy says you are one of the Goddesses.

She turned and smiled to the child.

I am little one and thank you and you family for such offering.

Nefertum dropped to one knee, bowing his head in supplication to the beautiful goddess. She knew him! He wished to keep his true identity concealed from the people of the market, but there was no way to address her in proper form without giving himself away. Instead he chose to address her as a mortal.

"I am humbled to be in your glorious presence, holy one. Would you permit me to escort you to the great temple?"

She tilted her head but nodded.

That will be fine. Before they send someone to find me.

She motioned for him to rise as she patted the little girl gently on top of her head as she runs back to her mother.

Nefertum offered his arm to Tikara.

Once they were a safe distance from the girl, he spoke, "I apologize for my strange attire, and unseemly manners... and also for what happened during the ceremony. I tried to find you to apologize sooner, but you were gone. I did not expect to find you in the market... What were you doing in the market anyway?"

I... I ran... Once it was over I... I needed to find any form of darkness shadows. All of this light and life.

She shook her head doubting anyone from the realms of the living could understand her.

I...I can not hear them here. The thoughts hopes and dreams of the dead.

"You know," Nefertum said, with a gentle smile, "You are not the first Underworld Goddess to come and reside at the great temple. There are dark hidden places in the temple, places that are gifts especially for those like you, who need a retreat from all of the light and noise. I can show you if you like."

I would like that. How to stand the silence though. I can't hear them here. Their dreams hopes or thoughts.

She shook her head the silence almost unbearable.

"Hear them?" Nefertum asked, taking a moment to puzzle out the meaning behind Tikara's strange words, "Oh... you mean the dead. I'm afraid I can't help with that, the living are full of hopes and dreams as well, but then, to hear those you must ask first."

Just outside of the temple complex, Nefertum glanced around to make sure that he was not being watched, and then began to strip out of his street clothing, until he was wearing nothing but a belted linen skirt. He stashed the clothing in a hidden alcove at a juncture in the outer temple wall. He considered attempting to explain his reasons for wishing to pass as a mortal, but decided that there really was no adequate explanation. It was a simple foolish pleasure, with no real purpose behind it.

Once Nefertum was properly dressed to fit his station in the temple, he resumed walking with Tikara. "Come. I'm sure the others have been missing you."

There you are Tikara it would be best if you did not run off like that in spite of my wife saying that is the only way you will learn. Even as king I would still rather not be on your fathers bad side.

Osiris stood arms crossed at the top of the stairs however after his official statement he walked down the great steps and held his arms out in gesture to offer a fatherly hug.

Worry not child my father enjoys keeping the sun bright on the temple for the ceremony. I have already spoken with him about it. He did however tell me it was taken care of about your stealthy and quick retreat from the temple. Thank you Nefertum. Again you prove the wisdom beyond your young years.

Nefertum bowed deeply to Osiris. "It is my great pleasure to see Tikara returned safely to the temple." Nefertum looked to Tikara and then back at Osiris. "I have offered this goddess a vow of service, to help her become acquainted with her new home, though I shall in all things be swayed by your far superior wisdom, Lord."

Nefertum hoped to receive Osiris's blessing to continue as friend and mentor to Tikara. He enjoyed the goddess's company, and with Osiris's blessing he could spend as much time with her as he wished.

Before Osiris could answer one way or another Isis answered.

I believe that would be a most appropriate and wise choice. I know our young Tikara would be in good hands with your aid and assistance.

Osiris nodded as he would have agreed to the request as well. He however had to be the one to make the final declaration.

From now on until she is comfortable in the great temple Nefertum will be assisting Tikara.

A bright light appeared and Ra stood there as well. With all Gods and Goddesses young and old quickly halting and bowing.

With this assignment to aid Tikara I will accept no trouble trick or torture befalling Nefertum from any of you.

Ra turned to Tikara and knelt some seeing her recoiling from the brightness even though she bowed as well to him.

Forgive and old man his powers child. I only wish I could help you hear them while you are here.

Anubis see to that for me Thoth aid him.

With that he was gone.

Nefertum shivered slightly. As usual, what he had meant to be a simple request for a small liberty, had shifted into a serious responsibility. Still, as responsibilities go, assisting Tikara would be a very pleasant one.

There was no pride or haughty feeling toward the other young gods at their admonishment from Ra. If anything, Nefertum felt a slight embarrassment due to his inability to earn their respect on his own terms, but it would be a relief to have a reprieve from their petty cruelties. It was not that he was incapable or unwilling to respond in kind, to their jabs and torments. He had in fact done just that in the past, but then, any playful retribution he had made, was met with such searing disapproval from his elders ...We expect so much more from you Nefertum, don't fall to their level, help them to rise up to yours... that Nefertum resolved himself to endure rather than engage.

Nefertum waited to be dismissed by the assemblage of elder gods. Now, he too felt a craving for the protective darkness of the hidden subterranean chambers of the temple.

She was shaking a combination of fear and the overwhelm of the light. Isis motioned for him to move to her and help her. She noticed then the girls hands and the sands on the temple floor begin to swirl with her shaking.

Tikara...

Isis spoke softly.

Calm my dear you are safe. Ra has departed. Go with Nefertum to a more comfortable area within the temple and relax.

With her soothing words Tikara slowly ceased her trembling and looked to him to guide the way.

Nefertum placed strong hands on Tikara's trembling shoulders and guided her before him through the temple arch and down a winding corridor. He spoke to her in a gentle voice, hoping to ease some of her anxiety. "I arrived from the kingdom below the waves, and it was the dryness and heat that vexed me most. I felt like a shriveled thing, with a thirst I could never satisfy. When I discovered the temple pools, I attempted to make my home there, but of course we are all encouraged to experience the diversity of the living world."

They arrived in a narrow passage that seemed to come to a dead end, with a linen screen painted with hieroglyphs and the image of Anubis. Nefertum pushed aside the screen to reveal as small square opening into pure darkness. "This shaft is the quickest way down into the depths of the lower temple. We will have to crawl, but I thought you might prefer this route over the broad staircase, which is the general access-way."

She nodded feeling the darkness as she smiled.

That will be fine as long as I can remain in the shadows for a while.

She moved down the tunnel crawling carefully and determined as the air around her called as she felt safer and more at home now.

Nefertum climbed into the narrow shaft behind Tikara, and pulled the screen into place behind them. "The shaft slants downward for about 200 cubits, and then enters into a small chamber. I will be right behind you, but I assume that my dark vision is poorer than yours. So please be patient with me if I lag behind."

Okay.

She was feeling far more peaceful as she crawled along. She pondered Ra's words about he would tolerate no prank or issues from the others with Nefertum. Then her mind drifted to how easily the child just walked up to her. The realm of the living was so strange and yet innocent in some ways... Strange.

Following after Tikara on his hands and knees in the dark was a simple pleasure. It was rare to find a moment of true privacy with another.

Nefertum found his mind envisioning what it would be like to kiss her, to pull her body close against his in the darkness, and to explore the curves and valleys of her perfect body with his fingertips, his lips, his tongue. He began to feel aroused. His organ began to swell beneath his linen skirt. Surely she would see when they came out into the chamber below.

He tried to shift his thoughts to something else. He did not wish to offend or embarrass the gentle spirited goddess, who might be his only chance to have a true friend among the immortals, but it was too late. His thoughts could not help but return to his vision of the two of them together, caressing, body to body in the darkness.

The chamber entrance was not far ahead, and Nefertum dreaded the moment when Tikara would discover of the evidence of his desire.

Upon exiting the tunnel she then stood face to face with Set. His energy caused a slight recoil from her. Far too many had perished in his deserts or by his hand.

The tall God held up a hand.

Do not fear Tikara I merely wished to meet all of the young Gods and Goddesses who now spend their year in the great Temple. Few if any of us ever seek to find ourselves on your father's bad side. Nefertum... Father has told me his proclamation about you aiding our skittish young Goddess. I envy you even her eyes do not betray her maternal lineage. Ra annoys Thoth to no end refusing to let him figure out even the most miniscule clue. But back to introduction Goddess Tikara I am Set an honor to meet you.

He bowed but there was something in his voice.

Tikara nodded and spoke.

It is most interesting to you as well Set... I have heard the dreams fears and wishes of many your deserts claimed the lives of.
