Hi,
I am American and have always loved Flemish and Dutch culture (as I have understood it) from the time of Brugel to Rembrandt. I would love to hear how you all feel about it. Are Brugels landscapes in anyway realistic representations of the countryside? How about his piantings of towns during the late middle ages?

I am definitely not an expert but I think for realistic impressions Bruegel is not your man... I find his style always somewhat fairytale-like... though it of course is inspired by the reality of that time... for more realistic impressions you should look about a century later, Albert Cuyp, Vermeer (you share his name) etc... some historic parts of Dutch towns like Delft and Amsterdam are still pretty much intact...

I general the sloping Flemish landscape still is a bit more fairytale-like than my flat country...

Just As I Thought

I must say that I am not surprised by your response. Although I love Brughel's landscapes, they always seemed a bit too hilly to come from the "low countries."
