Amber Morgan had grown up listening to her papa complain about the McGregors that owned the next ranch over. he always had something to say usually about how those no good McGregor's robbed him of land and water. it had all started long before Amber had been born and continued to this day. she had always been told to stay clear of the McGregor boys and she had always followed her papa's dictates. joining his battle with their neighbors even though she had not seen the McGregor boys since she was knee high to a grass hopper.

now she was standing with her friends at another neighbors ranch celebrating a wedding for the mathews youngest daughter samantha. she had been listening to her friends sally,june and della talk about her arch enemy's for the last 45 minutes.

sally. " oh those Mcgregors are so handsome how could you possibly not want to be around them amber.. half the gals in this fellowship would give their right arms to be with just one of those good looking men."
of course june and della both knodded their heads in agreament. when a large well built young man approached them amber moved into the back of the other three knowing he was coming to ask for a dance and not really feeling like dancing at the moment.

Andrew McGregor rode alone with his brother's Sam,Thomas and Jeff.They were heading to their ranch after a long day sortimng out the heard,"say why don't we stop by old Matthews place and get us some grub" Sam suggested as they moved along the trail.

"Youy only wanna go their causre you got a crush on his eldest" Jeff teased his brother causing Andrew and Thomas to chuckle as their brother blushed."Yeah I reckon it might be a good idea to drop by and pass our respects since Samantha's getting married" Andrew decided causing his brothers to yahoo in agreement,"but if the Morgan's are there no trouble Pa will go hotter than a branding iron if we get in a fight" he warned as they arrived at Matthews place.

Amber had not noticed the three young men until her friends began to giggle and whisper behind their hands as they watched the young men making their way around the dance floor.growning Amber moved away from her friends waving goodbye to them as she made her way over to the table that had been sat out with a long line of foods placed apon it for people to get what they wanted before moving on. their where just to many people to sit at one table so many young couples where scatered about the yard.

Grabing a glass of lemon aid Amber made her way over to a shaded tree where she sat her skirts billowing out around her as she siped at her drink and watched the dancers move around the dance floor.

Andrew watched as his brotyhers moved onto the dance floor,so far there hadn't been any problems with Morgans and he hoped that things were going to stay that way.Congratulating the bride and groom Andrew out of the cornner of his eye saw Amber Morgan all by her loansome sipping on a lemonade.

Excusing himself Andrew walked over to her,"my Ms Morgan I'm surprised that no one's asked you to dance" he grinned tipping his hat to her.Moving next to Andrew looked her in the eye,"so if its alright with you may I take this dance" Andrew asked bowing like a gentleman.

looking up at him she she offered a small smile deciding to be sival to the man for her friends sake." i don't think my papa would aprove of that...do you?" giggling she pounted her finger across the lawn to where her father stood with a group of men watching the two of them like a cat about to pounce on a mouse.

patting the ground beside her she scootched over " why not just have a seat young McGregor."
looking over at her papa she could already tell she would be in for a good talking on the way home and more than likely after they reached home as well. she just hoped that their cook was still in the house and would come to her rescue as she so often did.

Andrew chuckled,"that right well I could use a seat been busy out on the trail" he grinned as Amber moved over so he could sit next to her.Sitting down Andrew noticed the Morgan's looking at him,he responded by tipping his hat in their direction.

giggling amber to waves to her papa and the others. looking to andrew she asks " so are you and your brothers going to join in the race today? i heard the winner gets a prized bull. the mathews pickde him out for today."

Andrew rasied an eyebrow,"he did well Pa said somthing about needing a new bull so I think I might enter that race" he murmed.Looking at Amber he smiled,"and thats not the only thing I intend to win today" he whispered.

laughing she shruged " i take that to mean your entering the roping contest also." giggling she looked over at the barn again. she see's her friends standing near the door looking towards them and laughing as they chat.

Andrew laughed,"nah Samual wants to win that" he grinned.Leaning closer he whispered into Amber's ear,"then if you were the one needing roping i'd be first in line" he chuckled pretending to have told Amber a joke so her Pa didn't get suspecious.

before she could reply her papa came over and lifted her up by her arm. " say good bye youngin it's time we headed on home now." tiping his hat slightly he turned her around and marched her off towards their rig which he had the other men folk pull out and prepare for their departure. turning she waves goodbye to andrew.

Andrew watched Amber being dragged away by her Pa,"seems the old Morgan didn't want us to keep chatting" he mused.Walking back Andrew found his brothers,"you boys ready for the contests" he checked looking each of them in the eye.

His brothers yahooed in response and they set about winning a few things that Pa would like.Andrew won the race and aranged for old Matthews to bring the bull round the next morning,as he the boys rode for home all Andrew could think about was Amber Morgan and how lovely she looked.

she was right on the way home her papa read her the riot act. going on and on about how she was convoiting with the enemy and how those people are no good and she should stay away from them. smiling she agreed with her papa and before she knew it they where pulling in front of the house where she jumped from the wagon seat and made her way to her room. laying across the bed she closed her eyes and thought of him. giggling like a school girl she jumped from the bed and pened a short letter. handing it to a stable boy she favored with many sweat snacks over his short life time she had him deliver it to the McGregor ranch and right into the hands of andrew.

i have been unable to think of anything but you since leaving the party.
i know it would be hell and high water for us both if we where to be caught but i wish very much to speak with you again soon.

she hoped that andrew would receive the letter and send one back soon and that he would not let their fathers hate for each other come between what could become a great friendship. sighing she sat down on the front porch and slowly rocked on the porch swing.

Andrew was finishing feeding the horses when the stable boy from Morgan's arrived and handed him a letter,he smiled as he read it and quickly went back inside the house.

Dear Amber
Meet me tonight at the old fork by the outskirts of town.Get one of your sisters to cobver and I'll get my brothers too.Long to be with you.

Andrew

Handing the letter back to the boy Andrew went to find his brothers,"I need you boys to cover for me tonight I got an errend to run" he said avoiding there looks of knowing what his errend was.

when the stable boy came running toward her a peice of white paper in his outstretched hand she jumped up and huged him taking the paper she read it quickly before shoving it into the pocket of her dress. smiling she entered the house and looked for her sisters. she found two of them in their bedroom talking about the party they had just been to.

flopping onto the bed next to them she smiled " i have a favor to ask you guys."

her oldest sister looked at her ascance. " and what would this favor be amber?"

her younger sister giggled " and how much trouble are we going to get into for doing it?"

sitting up she pulled a pillow into her lap. amber looked from one to the other before she whispered." i think i am in love with someone.. and we are to meet tonight... will you tell papa i had to go to town for awhile?"

the two sisters looked at each other before looking back to her. neithor looking as if they where willing to tell such a fib to their father so she could go running off to meet some strange man in the dead of night.

" oh please help me..i must see him again."

sighing her older sister knodded. " alright then. just this one time though.and you better be talking to papa about marriage in the next couple of days becuase it is bound to get out that your meeting a man alone at night. and when he finds out you are going to wish you had gone on to heaven with mama."

sqweeling amber jumped up and huged her sisters tightly before running to her room to change into a simple gown suitable for riding but to obviouse that her papa would wonder about it.

dinner was a rushed affair, come to find out no one would have to cover for her after all. her papa was going to chicago for a week to meet with his partners.
waiting for him to leave she sattled her horse and rode away from the ranch. reaching the fork in the road sometime later she stoped and sat apon her horses back while she waited for andrew. it was pitch dark and she was begining to become affraid when she heard a horse approaching.

After making sure his brothers had his excuse ready Andrew went back into the house to quckly change.Pa was to be going tomorrow as he had to go see his partners in Houston about something,Andrew moved out of the house and saddled up his horse before riding off to meet Amber.

He knew their Pa's would be steaming if they got found out so hoped that their siblings kept mum about their meeting.He looked up ahead and saw Amber just waiting and hurried up to find her."Evening Ms Morgan fine night for a ride ain't it" he grinned pulling up next to her,she giggled andcreturned his greetings before they rode off to find a quiet spot just for the two of them.

smiling she could see andrew from the light of the moon and was greatfull that he had not changed his mind about coming." good evening andrew.. papa went out of town for a few days tonight so i had no trouble coming to meet you.. but i must not stay gone to long or i will be missed... what of you? did you have any trouble getting away?"

she was nervouse and very happy as they rode down the rode a bit before stoping near a brook to sit under a tall tree.

Andrew listened and nodded,"yes their covering me anyway tomorrow Pa's heading to Houston on busniess he'll be away for a few days too" he grinned at the fortune of both Pa's being away at the same time.


They stopped by a brook and Andrew helped Amber down from her horse,he layed a blanket down and helped her on to it."So Ms Amber what would you like to do this evening?" he grinned wrapping his arms around her.

leaning against him she let her cheek rest just below his shoulder. " i don't care andrew.. i just had to see you again, i am so sorry papa drug my sisters and i off like he did this afternoon. i was really enjoying getting to talk to you."

Andrew shrugged,"its all right I understand" he whispered.Andrew was tired of the feuding between their Pa's and hoped it would end soon,"so you been with any feller's" he asked grinning as the sun slowly set overhead.

pulling away from him she scowled." what kind of question is that to ask a lady andrew McGregor ..why i am starting to get the idea you think me some sort of floozy or somthing.. i will have you know i am a good girl."

crossing her arms over her chest she looked over her shoulder at him.
" i dont go meeting every guy i know in the middle of the night you know."

Andrew chuckled,'I never said you weren't a good girl Ms Amber Morgan" he retorted pulling her back to him.He looked into her eyes longingly,"so what kind of boys do good girls like" he whispered rubbing her back slowly.

smiling as she looked up at him she joking said." why the kind that don't go getting us into trouble of course." giggling she wraped her arms around his waist. and what about you andrew? do you prefer good girls to the huzzy's in town or do you happen to frequent that place.. what's it called again.. oooh yes. the golden nugget. i do recall papa saying you and your brothers had very nearly tore the place down one night." laughing she looked up at him.

Andrew laughed,"yeah I like thoses huzzys but good girls their like a gold nuggget in a stream" he chuckled looking at Amber.He stroked a strand of her from her face tenderly,"so Ms Amber you not intrested in a boy like me" he whispered moving her close.Andrew then kissed her with all the passion he could muster before parting their lips.

feeling a little overwhelmed amber pulled away and frowned. " i didn't intend to meet you so that you could acost me in the dark andrew.. i just wanted a chance to get to know you." feeling ashamed that she had let him kiss her like that she wondered what she was thinking meeting him in the middle of no where in the dead of night like this.
