The replacement of Sandin is the Navy’s third high-profile removal from a post in the past week. On Friday, Cmdr. Devine Johnson was relieved of command of the destroyer Bulkeley by the commodore of Destroyer Squadron 2. Johnson had taken over the ship in August 2021 after serving as the executive officer. Capt. William Harkin, Destroyer Squadron 2’s deputy commander, took over the Bulkeley in the interim. Command Master Chief Earl Sanders was also relieved alongside Johnson. Loss of confidence in their leadership was cited as the reason. The term can have many meanings, from a literal one to shorthand for major screw ups by those in command. The Navy did not disclose further details on the situation.

And on Wednesday, June 8, the Navy relieved the commander of Electronics Attack Squadron 137, which is part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group. Cmdr. Matthew McCormick had led “The Rooks” since September 2021; the squadron operates EA-18G Growlers

The Navy has fired nearly a dozen officers in leadership positions in less than three months, including five in one week, due to a “loss of confidence” in their ability to command — an unusual string of terminations across land, air and sea teams, experts said.

At least nine commanding officers and two senior advisers have been relieved of their duties since April, when a cluster of suicides on the USS George Washington warship sparked widespread concerns of a mental health crisis.

A total of 13 commanding officers have been fired so far this year, including 12 in the Navy and one in the Marine Corps, the Navy said. Most recently, four Naval commanding officers and a top leader were ousted from June 8 to June 14.

Military experts said it's common for commanding officers on ships to be fired, but that it’s rarer to see them booted from teams that handle trainings, fleet readiness and supply centers.

The Navy said an average of about 17 commanding officers have been relieved each year since 2011. It’s unclear if the service plans to announce more terminations soon.

George Marshall fired over 100 men of General Officer rank in the space of 20 months. Most were found more suitable slots. Many of these men too will be moved into roles where they can be more effective,. The man who really needs moving out is the Defense Secretary Lloyd Austen (68), he is far to close to the Joint Chiefs who are even more ancient than the Russian military leadership.

The most important feature of these men being relieved of command is why were they, and not their bosses removed. These guys were senior but not the most senior; the latter seem to be protected species. All except one of the Joint chiefs was appointed by Donald Trump and all except one will be between 60 and 66 before the year is out.
